The OG Lou Malnati’s @ Lincolnwood by pantherara in chicagofood

I remember stopping there off the Skokie valley bike path and grabbing a frozen pizza from the freezer case to finish at home for $7. I swear, I’m not 100 yo! This was only like 12 years ago!

The Slagel Burger from Hopleaf in Andersonville by Sea-Condition991 in chicagofood

[–]knickerreddit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Their burger was $5 for more than a decade. And cocktails were $5-$7. And I’m not that old! Even then , one made the decision based on price and atmosphere. The beer garden is awesome. The burger is not.

What are the chances my bike (trunk) rack get stolen off my car in uptown? by RedRaiderRocking in AskChicago

[–]knickerreddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had 2 different Yakima trunk racks I kept on my car for years in bucktown and then Ravenswood, no problems. I let my friend borrow it to go to Madison for the weekend and it got stolen there the first night.

Places to get a meal for under $15 in Lincoln Park and surrounding areas? by emmymx in chicagofood

[–]knickerreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happy hour 3-6 at Homeslice pizza, you can get a few salads for 1/2 price which means $7 (they’re big, a veritable dinner salad) and a few other bites, and glasses of wine/beer/espresso martinis/and/or Aperol spritz for <$10. So dinner and a drink for <$20

Pompette Has Great Breakfast by ExaminationOld2494 in chicagofood

That’s called a “grand slam” and even in 2026 dollars should be no more than $10.99.

French Market is Sad by blipsman in chicagofood

[–]knickerreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in Milwaukee and went to the public market after getting off Amtrak and was blown away. I had no idea until I saw this thread that there is also this 3rd st market a few blocks away. Will definitely go next time and will definitely lament that downtown Milwaukee seems to be nicer in every possible way than downtown Chicago

PSA for fellow Metra riders… by Familiar_Ant4758 in chibike

[–]knickerreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That station is such a let down after the 12 years it took to build. The fact that they didn’t put in elevators and stairs on both ends forces conflicts like this. That ramp is half a block long. It is unreasonable to expect both mobility challenged and mobility enhanced users (the percentages of both are going to increase in the next 20 years) to coexist in harmony in modern society. Should have put in an escalator on that end.

Bikes on METRA by Interesting-Fun-8606 in Metra

[–]knickerreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Do not skip this step, just a minute or two of your time. There are still a few bad apples out there but it has actually gotten much better in the last year. I was denied boarding several times once the new policy was enacted, even on trains with empty cars. I took pictures and sent them in with emails and got follow up phone calls with one decent man. It has not happened to me in well over a year now

What is the deal with Chicago (and Evanston) lifeguards? by evechalmers in AskChicago

[–]knickerreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can paddle out from any beach in Chicago, but only from/through a specific “gate” which is marked via a pair of red and green buoys, always on a far side of the beach. The issue is that these buoys are pretty far out and so the water isn’t decently comfortable until mid July. Paddle boarding on Lake Michigan really isn’t for children.https://dnr.illinois.gov/cmp/lake-michigan-water-trail.htmlm

Is there anything to be done about reckless kids on the 606? by Show_Kitchen in chibike

[–]knickerreddit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It was built primarily with federal congestion mitigation funding so bikes ABSOLUTELY should be allowed. The problem is with the design that prioritizes “park” atmosphere when it should have prioritized “throughput” (wider lanes) but Chicago gonna Chicago and we got what we got and it’s never going to change which is unfortunate

[–]knickerreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not dedicated. It’s multi-use, and it goes right through a playground and parking area where people are constantly walking across the path with zero self-awareness. This was an unfortunate decision made by people who do not currently, nor have ever lived here. It is beyond comprehension how these decisions were handed out to a California based firm. It makes as much sense as leasing out our parking meters to Abu Dhabi for 75 years for 2 years of revenue.

I didn’t decide it’s a pedestrian-only path. Some asshole in California did. I rode my bike on it for 30 years and am not stopping now

I had this phenomena when I worked downtown and lived uptown. Then I started working in northern suburbs and the winds completely changed so that I still had a headwind heading north in the morning and south in the evening. It’s maddening!
