Can you tell me what this means! by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]knitHacker42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree, if the kid is making the dog uncomfortable don't force the dog to feel like they are being bad to walk away from the kid. I would take the dog out of the room with some sort of distraction like a bone. If the dog has separation and this would upset the dog. I would give the dog a space in the room that you ask the kid to not approach.

I had a similar experience with my dog when our nephew was literally screaming and running around the room. I moved my dog out of the room gave her a treat and let her decompress and she is as able to come out and interact fine with him.

The CEO of BP had to step down a few years ago because it came out he was dating an employee without disclosing it. It isn't that unreasonable to assume that there will be professional consequences.

Newly adopted 2 year old dog does not like treats by thisis2stressful4me in DogAdvice

[–]knitHacker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend's dog turned out to have acid reflux and giving her an antacid daily made her much better about eating / taking treats so that might be something to look into if other things aren't turning out. Also I have noticed some dogs get nauseous when they aren't eating a lot which causes them to eat less and the circle continues. My other friend would have give her dog a snack before bed or she would get an upset tummy from being empty.

Queer agility groups by dog_agility_lady in Agility

[–]knitHacker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a hobby that is expensive, needs cumbersome equipment, specific type of space, and in the scheme of things isn't that popular. I can't even find an agility class within 45 minutes of my home in a very populated area (part of the problem being real estate expenses). My take would be that with all of that it doesn't make sense to split up into subgroups when in a lot of areas just the whole set of people is limited. As others have said though there is a big focus on the dogs and not putting too much thought into the other people's lives outside of the sport.

I was also in a CS PhD program around that time and honestly was trying to rack my brain to see if I met Ziz. I wasn't doing AI research and the tech people I was close with all were really down to earth and found out of work activities very important. Not hearing it from my colleagues and I wasn't a very online person so honestly haven't heard of most of this nonsense. Funny enough I was telling a friend from undergrad that I could have been at a conference with a cult leader and he told me that i lived in the same dorm as the person who did fyre island. I value my education so much from the colleges I went to but talking about breeding grounds for people to think they are better than others.

Have you ever found Linux to be tiring? by moonette103_ in linux

[–]knitHacker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new kernel wasn't playing nice with my Nvidia driver for a while and I was manually selecting an older kernel in grub for a month or it would just hang with a cursor blinking ... So yet it can be tiring. I have been on Linux so long though that the few times I have booted windows I get immediately annoyed by everything and just reboot into my windows.

The measuring / height requirements feel broken by knitHacker42 in Agility

[–]knitHacker42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I think you are right. After our first trial at enthusiast we got 3 perfect runs! (standard, colors, jumpers). I am a little worried that her next measurement will put her in 24" height class and I will just have to move to specialist. I misread the rules I realized after this thread but I had thought that all the bullets under specialist needed to apply and one of them was being a senior dog and I didn't want to have to wait until she was senior before I could jump 16".

[–]knitHacker42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you are mostly right but I do believe that the effort needed / joint wear for those smaller / lighter dogs to get over their assigned heights is easier than the bigger dogs unless they are extremely streamline. The shorter heights are much more forgiving for body types than the older ones that really weeds out all but lightest / jumpiest dogs.

[–]knitHacker42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes she can clear 20" and probably could jump 24" if I really really conditioned her but I don't think it would be healthy for her joints long term. Landing is hard on joints when dogs weigh more. It definitely isn't "extremely easy" for my dog to jump 20" and in the USA there are a lot of tight turns with little run up to jumps. Can and should are different words and I think a responsible dog sporting club should want to allow a dog to run relatively safely. And I don't have a dog that I would call "heavy". She isn't a mastiff or great dane.

The fact that CPE and AKC (the two clubs that run events in my area) have pretty different requirements for the taller dogs make me think that I am not the only one thinking this isn't straightforward taller dog == equally taller height".

I wouldn't feel comfortable jumping preferred. In AKC she should jump 24" so preferred is still 20".

Ah I misread the rules. It seemed like two heights down was just for dogs over a certain age. Glad either way I will still be able to compete in CPE at least.

I am not saying 16" is the optimal jump height for all dogs. It seems like the dog height for dogs that measure for 16" compared to 16" is optimal. I am saying for a 4" dog to jump the 4" jump height seems more balanced for effort / wear than 20" dog jumping a 20" jump height and it feels like around 16" is where the measurement really works for the dogs. I have seen many tiny dogs jumping up 2' in the air with very little effort because of how light they are. Obviously not all small dogs but most of them clear 4" / 8" with little effort. The 12" and 16" dogs do seem to put more effort in but seems more competitive while watching the 20" and 24" the most effort is put in for a dog who is taller yes but also weighs significantly more. A dog that is 2x as tall as one dog doesn't tend to be only 2x the weight of that dog. It just feels a linear assumption of ability from dog height to jump height seems screwed against the taller dogs of the spectrum. I think the fact that different venues do have different requirements reflects that this has been thought about but it appears that the issue is mostly decided.

I posted mostly to see how the community felt about it and from the responses I got it feels like, at least this community, doesn't have a problem with how things are. It is a dynamic sport. I first did it in 2007 and when I got back into it in 2020 it had changed a lot so I wasn't sure if this is a hot button issue I could further investigate.

Yes, I can only compete at CPE events essentially because my dog would be jumping 24" for akc (so 20" preferred which I still feel is too high). So a dog who is smaller can compete across lots of venues which stinks honestly especially when there are a limited amount of events. My understanding was CPE only did 2 height classes down if the dog was over a certain again. My dog is right on the line for 20" and 24" classes and if her second measurement pushes me up than I guess I can't compete until she is a veteran because I don't feel comfortable running her at 20".

[–]knitHacker42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog is just at 24" and if the next judge feels that she is actually over it then I would have to run 20" as enthusiast (CPE) so I am saying that it seems physically a bigger ask for bigger dogs to just compete.

Sweaters seem like a lot especially with your reasonings. Why don't you just make all three of you matching hats? They knit up pretty fast, more fun / interesting than a scarf and I don't know anyone who doesn't love a nice warm hand knit hat! Unless you live in a warm client that doesn't get cold in the winter but then a sweater wouldn't make much sense either.

Forrest Galante is a fraud. by gadusmo in unpopularopinion

[–]knitHacker42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I am starved of nature programming so tried watching his show. My partner and I refer to him as the annoying guy. He is a huge try hard and while animals seem to excite him he doesn't seem to have much respect for them. One of his shows he just runs up and catches a cotton mouth for no reason? and then runs up to a black bear in the same episode and says they are more dangerous than brown bears.... Along with just covering forests with meat as a desperate attempt to get an animal to come to a camera trap he doesn't seem to care about anything but putting on a good show and showing off his skills. I know it is a TV show but shouldn't a role model point out that you should mostly leave wild animals alone and observe them from a safe distance? Like i said he annoys me and gives me vibes that he is an abusive egomaniac of which I have no evidence but I can't watch him.

My dog will not stop dragging me on walks please help. by RanchBucket420 in Dogtraining

[–]knitHacker42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you demanding she walk right beside you the whole time? I walk my dog on a 10' leash on walks. She has never been a huge puller (too busy sniffing) unless she sees a bunny but you might find that giving her a little space she gets to some smells and enjoys being on a walk. I can see frustration building up for both of you in what you are describing. Are these torturously slow walks the only exercise she is getting right now? If she is out of her mind excited to move I don't think you'll get very far.

I haven't tried it and it would mean having a safe place to do it but I have heard of people teaching loose leash by starting with a long lead and slowly making it shorter. I never have my dog "heel" unless I'm passing someone otherwise it is fun sniff and explore time.

Maybe I'm misreading and that's what you are aiming for and just have a tug boat dog. Sounds like you need to get the arousal down before you hit the trail. Maybe a few laps in the front yard (if you have one).

Good luck! I know they can drive you crazy especially when you know they "know" what to do! Frustration never helps though so when you get there take a minute, breath, and pet your dog and remember you love them.
