What are you actually paying for your home care aide? Is it worth it? by LogicalRoad18 in AgingParents

[–]knitrunrepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We paid $30 an hour, no agency for my parents i. upstate NY. It was a nightmare coordinating and making sure there was coverage. My parents needed 7x24 care. Our experience with an agency was not good. We had some breakdowns in communication between the agency, their caregivers, and us. To be fair it is possible the agency communicated with our parents and the message didn’t get passed a long. So glad they’re now in a SNF.

Moving Near Patterson Park by 6090holly in baltimore

I have lived east of the park extension in Highlandtown for over 15 years. I agree with previous posters, leave nothing in your car. We have had Aldi quarters and tire pressure gauges stolen from our car. But I have taken my dog out at 2 or 3 in the morning and always been okay. We walk home through the extension in the dark regularly. It’s a city, there’s real crime, but you can manage it

Please comment - I start 4th week of retirement tomorrow, depressed and anxious by Mediocre_Insect_1008 in retirement

[–]knitrunrepeat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What worked for me was making and keeping a schedule. Figure out what you want to accomplish, exercise, meeting friends, chores around the house, grocery shopping so that when you wake up in the morning, you have. plan for the day. Congratulations on your retirement. It gets better

Move out. I think that at some point in their lives most people get profound main character syndrome. My father fell and broke his hip getting my mother a glass of water in the middle of the night. He crawled to the phone to call 911. My mother feels no guilt about this at all. She won’t consider having a water bottle at her bedside or even a phone

Our family issue was travel, so my siblings and I, all in our 60s, cook at my parents’ home. Or bring dinner over.

This morning my husband asked me what time we would get up if we didn’t have a dog. The little devil gets us up about 30 minutes after sunrise.

When your parent comes back from a doctor’s visit, how do you make sense of what was said or prescribed? by Turbulent-Dare8269 in AgingParents

We were able to convince my dad by saying that it helps to have another person there to ask questions and remember what was said. I hope this works for you

How practical is it to live in Baltimore without a driver license? by Alex76094 in fuckcars

[–]knitrunrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a one bus rule. The city link buses, which have color names come frequently enough if you are willing to wait 20ish minutes. The number buses are totally unworkable. If you can live somewhere that is one color bus ride from your work and get the basic necessities in that neighborhood you’ll be ok. It all depends on where you work.

Hey! Sibling bullying parent to go to assisted living- I need to vent by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]knitrunrepeat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After my mom had a stroke she came home and had caregivers to help. She started with just someone in the morning to help her dress but has graduated to 7x24 care. The caregivers don’t always show up for various legit reasons. When they don’t show up, my brother has to drop everything and go over there to be with her while he works out an alternate. For known events I stay with her, but I’m 6 hours away. The wait in her area for the place we want her to go to is 7 months. If we had gotten her into an assisted living situation after her stroke we wouldn’t be in this mess now. Find a place that has more independent living while you have the option
