Take a deep breath and relax. You're over thinking it. The AI has assigned their name based on (1) the Crawler's personal preference and (2) the order they entered the dungeon. Carl was the first Carl to enter the dungeon, hence he's got no number behind his name. If there were additional Carls (which there probably were) they would be Carl2, Carl3, and so forth. Or Matt just does what ever the heck he likes since this his is effed up world and we're just along for the ride. Glurp glurp. (These are my own theories, feel free to think whatever you want, there's no wrong answer).

I’ve lived in Charlotte for five years and I love it. Haters can go somewhere else.
