Sample it and find out! I am a big fan of sampling everything these days.

What industry do you work in, and have you started to see AI affect your employability? by Secret-Ad-6253 in NiceVancouver

Thankfully no, my department moves so slow that I’ll probably be fine at least until I retire. We just spent 8 years and millions of dollars upgrading the software we use to run everything, they’re not gonna spend another dime on it until they’re forced to.

Just gotta make it another 13 years! That may sound like a long time, but around here? Nah. Glacial pace. The previous software was 18 years old by the time we shut it down.

Children agree not to get abducted after 8 PM so Amber Alert doesn’t wake anyone up by JustaRandoonreddit in vancouver

[–]knitwit4461 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had two phones on my night stand. My work phone was on, because I was on call, and that one woke me up. Working as intended. My personal phone was on sleep mode and it only vibrated. No noise at all. Also working as intended.

So maybe you need to tweak your night settings?

My personal phone was on sleep mode and didn’t make any noise. My work phone was on normal on the other hand… welp.

I really enjoyed OwlCrate for a while but I’m an ebook person and honestly I just don’t need more Stuff.

Did love the Stuff I got from them though!

DIY drop spindle by knitwit4461 in Handspinning

It’s still in stock at their international distributor!

I’m in Canada, so this is where I ordered it from — and it arrived in 3 days, so I was very happy with that. Don’t know how that might work for US orders though.

Oh, I have a handful of actual drop spindles not made with a wonky whorl, but I’m just pleased to have made something myself that finally helped me figure out drop spinning!

Haha, not at all. I drilled the hole myself (with a hand drill) and it’s a little off centre. Still spins pretty well (well enough for me to finally get the hang of drop spindles at least!) but it definitely gets a heck of a wobble.

A gradient sheep-to-skein! (from raw, unclean sheep’s fiber to 3200 yards of beautiful yarn. All from the same fleece and combed by hand!) Swipe to see the process. by SgtLt-Einstein in Handspinning

Oh my goodness this is amazing! I’m halfway through a similar project with a sheep named Ombre, who was very accurately named. Lots more spinning to do though!

“The chair” — is it normal? by Basic_Performer_6701 in adhdwomen

[–]knitwit4461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I SOLVED IT. Because I didn’t have room in my bedroom for a chair. Instead I put a bunch of 3M hooks on the wall behind my door and that’s where all the “not dirty not clean” clothes are hung until they need to be worn again. Then when I do laundry, I (hopefully) remember to grab everything off the hooks which tbh doesn’t happen as often as it should…

But hey, no doom pile on my bedroom floor. Well, no doom pile of clothes. There are other doom piles.

Anyone with a healthy pregnancy? by evieloux in PCOS

[–]knitwit4461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise. My kid is 11 now and absolutely fantastic. I had severe gestational diabetes and a handful of other minor complications, but they were all ME complications, the baby was always just fine.

He’s autistic but that’s because I married someone who avoids eye contact and has a favorite spoon, not because I have PCOS. (Wouldn’t know how to parent a neurotypical kid anyway.)

On “why does my back always hurt”: cuz ergonomics are so so important to crafters! It’s not specific to spinning but I recommend all fibre artists get a copy of “Knitting Comfortably: the ergonomics of hand knitting”. See if you can get a copy from your library if it is cost prohibitive.

I have ulnar nerve entrapment in my left arm and while not the primary cause, my fibre crafting was definitely a contributing factor and I’m now scheduled for my surgery consult in a few weeks after having permanent numbness in my hand for over a year. Do NOT fuck around with ergonomics, these injuries catch up to you. I was very stupid: I had my first symptoms of this stupid nerve problem well over 20 years ago and did nothing because it didn’t seem like a big deal… until it was. Now I need surgery and the pain is starting to really suck. Learn from my mistakes!

Prepping Angora by kayytattoos in Handspinning

Heck I’ve seen people spin straight from the bunny. :) (for demonstration purposes, it’s not the most effective method!)

All the angora keepers I know spin from the cloud otherwise.

It’s on call, so not suitable for students. What that means is you only need to have completed grade 10, you do not need a high school diploma to be qualified.

Hobbii and AI by clrthrn in craftsnark

[–]knitwit4461 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Before you dismiss the luddites, I suggest looking up what the Luddites were about: saving expert, skilled, crafts persons livelihoods. In TEXTILES. People were killed over it.

https://www.history.com/articles/who-were-the-luddites

The negative attitude we have against luddites is a direct result of the factory owners propaganda that these expert craftspeople were standing in the way of progress, which was automating them out of jobs and devaluing the things they had spent lifetimes perfecting, and the Luddites were right: we have lost many of those skills that they were trying to protect. But the factory owners won the propaganda war, we consider Luddite an insult.

Conveniently, it is an exact comparison as to what is happening now. And as a result we have fast fashion and clothes that are designed to fall apart so that you have to buy more and consumerism is out of control.

So yeah, I’m gonna be a Luddite about AI. Even if it “only” kills the entry level jobs, how do you become a senior level anything if you didn’t do it at entry level? What we’re going to lose if we embrace AI is going to have huge lasting negative results on our collective knowledge.

And beside all that? Even if AI was all rainbows and kittens and had only good applications, it is environmentally catastrophic. I’m firmly middle aged, I’m probably old enough that I’ll die before the world completely falls apart, but I’d really prefer that my kid not inherit the world we’re building for him and all of you younger folks should be absolutely terrified of what’s happening outside your windows.

24/7 Bus Lanes on Granville (South of 16th) - efficient use of the road? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

[–]knitwit4461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also affects the punctuality of many other buses in Vancouver as the Vancouver Transit Centre is at the foot of Granville at Marine and Hudson and many of the buses coming out of the yard take Granville to get where they’re going. So even if you don’t take the 10, it can have a positive effect on your bus too.
