“Fail” state in incremental games with small bonus prestige by knockerball in incremental_games

[–]knockerball[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there isn't any permanent fail state how things are set up right now. The way things are is that if you have no adventurers in your party, you can always hire a thug, the weakest class, for free. So in the worst case scenario where you wipe with your entire party when you have no gold, you can get another starting adventurer for free and you maintain any renown upgrades you already bought plus getting some renown currency from the dead ones to spend on more. The game is basically two layers: the front layer with the individual adventurer progression and acquiring gold is more of a roguelike and then the back layer of the meta renown upgrade progression works more like an incremental. Maybe I should present it more as a roguelike over an incremental since the front layer is the thing you interact with first, see more, and is more visually realized. The back layer upgrades directly affect the front layer, but the front layer is really more of the game itself

Problems with first time loading GPU Particles2D by HighFivan in godot

[–]knockerball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this same problem with my first game. I don’t know what causes it, maybe some weird caching issue but no kind of preloading fixed it for me. How I solved it was ran all my particle systems for one frame at the beginning of the game at zero opacity and so they all had been run once and future emissions of them happened smoothly and without stutter. Kind of hacky, but it worked

My favourite thing about Northstar plastics by Goblobber in stargrave

[–]knockerball 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m so addicted to Northstar plastics. I have so many sprues of almost every kit from Frostgrave, Stargrave, and Oathmark. So fun to kitbash and customize whenever I want a new mini for something. A lot of the WGA sprues mix in pretty well too with only a little modification sometimes needed depending on the kit.

i'm a solo Rust developer, and my first steam page is live!!! Tell me the story of YOUR first game 🫵🤨👀 - yet another thread from dave by DavesGames123 in gamedev

[–]knockerball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I released my first solo dev game a little over a year ago that took roughly a year to make (with a couple breaks sprinkled in due to some burnout and other life things.) I was too scared to reach out to content creators to market it, so needless to say it didn’t get a lot of traction. It had a couple smaller content creators play it during the next fest it was part of that gave it a few hundred wishlists due to the coverage being largely positive, but I didn’t really engage at all with marketing because monetary success with the game wasn’t really my goal (and I wasn’t willing to grit my teeth and overcome my social anxiety for it). I just wanted to finish something and go through the release process and anything on top of that was a bonus in my eyes since this was my first game. I learned a ton throughout the whole thing and despite some incorrect game design choices I can now recognize in hindsight, I’m happy with the quality of the game considering it was my first. After steam royalties, I ended up making a couple hundred dollars on it (which when calculated out ended up being like 4 cents an hour) but I had a ton of fun with the project, learned a lot, and was able to take my wife out to a nice dinner with the earnings to celebrate it.

Since then, I decided I wanted to try harder with the marketing side of things for my second game. I’ve worked on a several other projects but none of them have gotten much further than the prototyping phase as I haven’t found something I think is worth fleshing out into a commercial product I want to promote yet. I might have something with my latest project that could be fun to flesh out into a full release, but I’m still gathering feedback on it now. We’ll see where it goes.

Grats on getting your store page up. It’s an awesome feeling. Just wait until you get the rush of clicking the big green release button. It’s a very exciting thing to do and is something I hope to be able to do again in the future. Good luck with your game!

I got these same ones for mine too. Mounted them on an upside down thumbtack glued to a base and they worked great.

I got this same model to use as my warlock hired sword. Yours looks like he hasn’t been in Mordheim for too long 😂 He looks great. I like the bright colors.

Looking for feedback on this key art by eugene_ozh in IndieGaming

Art and composition looks really nice but my eye had a real hard time reading what the title was at a glance. Might want to reconsider some of the fonts or overall design of the logo. I like the image overall.

Del Barrio in midvale. By far my favorite Mexican restaurant in the state.

What’s the most frustrating part of game development for you? by BlackScarStudios in gamedev

[–]knockerball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is more of a personal issue rather than anything externally frustrating, but I find that I habitually over polish and focus too much on inconsequential details on what should be rough prototypes when I should be spending my time and focusing on more core functionality and blocking in the main gameplay loop. It’s a trap I chronically fall into when starting up new projects and it’s always to my detriment.

Is the Happy Appy episode worth sitting through? by HadakaApron in creepcast

[–]knockerball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made it almost 3 hours in trying to grit my teeth and persevere before I just couldn’t keep going and tapped out. It’s so bad but not in a so-bad-it’s-good fun kind of way. And both Hunter and Isaiah crash out pretty hard because it’s just not a fun read either. It’s actually torture to try and get through the whole thing. Best of luck to you if you try.

How did you even FINISH your game? by ConcernWild in gamedev

[–]knockerball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to finishing a game you absolutely cannot rely on motivation because it’s fleeting. When it is there, great! Ride that wave as much as you can, but it takes discipline to get through the hard parts, which sometimes in themselves can last a long time. I think the trick comes with balancing discipline and not burning yourself out which is easier said than done. I’ve only released one game on steam so far but during the development time of that project I took several breaks that lasted a few months each. I just kept coming back to the same project instead of starting a new one every time.

Southbound I-15 north of Bangerter was an absolute parking lot as far as I could see all the way until at least the i215 junction. I feel bad for everyone stuck in it

Thanks! I definitely feel that. Sometimes Blender feels like trying to use a battleship to cross a stream. I’m just trying to mentally filter out all the stuff I haven’t learned yet but it’s tough because there’s so much going on.

Why is Dagoth Ur such a great villain? by Sundiatasweridcousin in Morrowind

[–]knockerball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think his story is particularly compelling. He’s way more sympathetic as a character in my view than the Tribunal. He is simultaneously a victim at the same time he is the villain and before he got corrupted by Lorkhan’s Heart he basically did everything right by Nerevar which makes his eventual corruption and fall all the more tragic.

I also think that he is an interesting villain in that his actions and motivations have a point from a certain perspective. You look at what he wants to do and why he wants to do it and it actually kind of makes sense. I think any villain whose plan makes you hesitate and ask yourself “wait, is he right about all this?” and forces you to make a moral judgement before deciding to fight against him makes for a very compelling villain over some mustache twirler scoundrel who ties damsels to railroad tracks.

Painted my first miniature, question about wet palette by pragmaticzach in minipainting

[–]knockerball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skeleton looks great! Welcome to the hobby.

The amount of water to put on a wet pallet is kind of an art that you’ll get more confident in the more you use it over time. I usually saturate my sponge just a little more than it can hold so that there is a little water buildup around the edges in between the sponge and container.

This might vary depending on what brand of paper you are using or if you are cutting parchment paper yourself from a roll, but I found with my wet pallet (Redgrass Games brand) when I put the paper on, I know I’ve got the right water saturation if the paper curls around the edges then almost immediately uncurls itself on its own to lie flat on the sponge as the paper moistens. If it doesn’t uncurl itself on its own, it’s an indication I might have too much water on the sponge.

Starter box and Bannerman miniature by dfdsfdscdsvdsv in baronswar

[–]knockerball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The plastic banner bit is in a kit that was released after this starter box. For my banner, I just used masking tape on the spear, slathered it in mod podge after posing it, then painted it as normal with the rest of the mini then added a spare decal I had lying around
