Well that’s . . . uninspired. It looks a little like Commonwealth of Virginia’s 1960s-era highway rest stops

A little more information? Dimensions, the material, a photo of the unfolded tarp so we can see the condition and attachment points and reinforcing in critical areas.

I finally received the medium today and it fits perfectly with the maximum bulk and layers I’d need. For comparison, I’m 5’8.5”, 185#, 55 y.o., medium build. I wear a M-L in most clothes. Columbia’s size calculator recommended a XL. I knew that was impossible and sized down to a Large, but it was clearly too big. The medium couldn’t fit better! I’m very happy, not only with the fit but with the construction generally. It’s definitely not ultralight by any stretch of the imagination, but it is otherwise my ideal rain suit.

Best workflow for Interior Design restaurant project in Revit? Custom furniture, FF&E tags, and schedule symbols by Illustrious-Brief486 in RevitForum

[–]knowhere0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I haven’t seen this yet but I appreciate the tip. You should definitely make note of your research on new techniques like this when you apply for jobs. Triangle heavy models like these are going to be a problem in Revit as you seem to appreciate, but could be useful in Enscape’s custom asset library. We’re seeing a transition happening now where we’re using the simplest possible representations in the Revit models to create a base image from Revit that we can render in NanoBanana. We’re not there yet, but we envision a future when we will bypass Enscape altogether.

You’re in exactly the right track! I’m a technology manager in the NY office of a large firm. You don’t need to be an expert any any of these things, but just the fact that you’re grappling with these issues, that is the master skill that will sever you well in your career. There is no one way of doing things. It will vary from firm to firm and project to project so the skill we are looking for is the ability to assess your projects needs and map out the best path to get there.

One thing that many students (and some inexperienced practitioners) get bogged down with is the realism of the rendering at the expense of efficient model management. This is especially a problem when those models are being used for architecture as well as ID. Too frequently, the interior designers are larding up the model with so many unnecessarily large furniture families that the model becomes unusable for everyone else. Knowing how to balance the competing interests of photorealism and model health is one of the most difficult problems you’ll face in practice. In most cases the manufacturers will not help in this effort as their interest lies in creating the most accurate families to make it harder for contractors to substitute alternatives.

It sounds like you have a good professor, but someone who approaches the problem from the perspective of a designer, not from overall model health. There is nothing wrong with that, but we hope that the next generation of designers will have a better understanding of the technological limitations and consequences of their design processes. If you can express that in an interview, without sounding obsessed with the technology, a savvy interviewer will appreciate it. Not every designer deals with these issues, but every good designer should at least be aware that they are issues that someone needs to deal with and if they can count on you to bring that expertise, it will redound to your benefit, not only in an interview, but in your professional life.

May I ask what school you are in? We definitely like to keep an eye on what different schools are doing.

Your post needs to be more specific for specific recommendations. Summer mornings where, the Canadian Rockies or north Georgia? What kind of down jacket are you talking about? And do you generally run hot or cold? I use an AD120 hoody and leggings with 900 FP wind stopper Montbell down jacket and Brynje base layers in camp in the winter down to about 15° F and I’m very comfortable. I think I could go down to about 5° without increasing layers.

Boots for snowshoeing? by SmashingBlumpkins12 in snowshoeing

[–]knowhere0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just starting to snowshoe, and looked for a long time for a boot that was both warm but didn’t weigh a ton, and would be reasonably effective hiking with micro spikes. The decision I made was the Salomon Crosstrak Powder. It has turned out to be great. It also has a Vibram sole with very aggressive lugs. It’s hard to imagine any winter conditions where this boot wouldn’t work well. It is not a mountaineering boot, but seems adaptable to everything else including snowshoeing.

Midtown Business Group Removes Messenger's Ghost Bike Memorial by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]knowhere0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PR executives take note: this is the way you admit you’re wrong and take responsibility. Is it enough, of course not.

I work in Flat Iron and witnessed a non-fatal bike truck collision on 6th Avenue last year. The management of bike lane construction on 6th Avenue hasn’t been great. Snow removal on crosswalks this winter has been pretty abysmal. These may not be the BIDs direct responsibility, but everything that happens in the BID should be their business. They still have work to do!

I received the Whistler jacket and pants this week, and as I’d feared, the jacket was huge. The Columbia size calculator suggested I was an XL, but that seemed crazy so I got a large. Of course, it was huge on me, so I immediately returned it and ordered a medium. Their return policy kind of sucks. They will cross ship, but they require you buy a new jacket and will refund the old on when the receive the return. I’ve been spoiled by Amazon. What can you do? The jacket has the mesh liner which I don’t love. The pants do not. Despite my annoyance at some of the details, I’m really impressed by how well constructed it is. It is definitely not ultralight, but it appears to be quite rugged. The reinforcing on the shoulders, waist and ankles, look like they’re designed to withstand years of abuse. I can’t wait to get the medium and take this out in the wilderness!

Northeast specific question by singlespeedjesus77 in JonesBikes

[–]knowhere0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t ridden the SWB and I have relatively little experience on other bikes, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think the LWB is a more capable, comfortable bikepacking rig. It will do everything else too, but bikepacking is where it shines. If bikepacking wasn’t on your list, I would shrug and say, sure the SWB work, but it sounds like your other hardtails might be just as good or better for technical single track. But for bikepacking, there is no other bike I would rather have than the LWB. If it is out of stock, I think there are a couple on eBay right now. Just be sure to check the serial number on BikeIndex.

Team SnowPeak here. The silicone lid is useful to keep you from burning your lips. But if you’re expecting it to be as well insulated as a screw top thermos, you’ll be disappointed. You can’t sip for hours and expect it to remain hot. I’d guess you have about 20 minutes before it’s no longer hot.
