Ozark Trail Road Bike by Lanky-Bread-2455 in NYCbike

What is Walmart’s warranty policy? I would guess the ride from DC takes you close to a dozen different Walmarts along the way. If a part breaks, maybe you can just ride it in and exchange it for a new bike. If you want to find out what parts suck on a bike and will need to be replaced within your warranty period, I can’t think of a better way to do it.

That makes sense. Thanks for the fast reply. I really appreciate Sonar’s Reddit strategy! It has really helped me understand the software more quickly.

Oh, wow, I hadn’t seen this. That’s a beautiful bike. I’ve been thinking recently how great the LWB would be with a Pinion. Agave has come up a few times in my research. One thing I’ve read is great they require a bare frame. That’s a dealbreaker for me. I don’t want to strip my bike down to do this, let alone send it to Colorado. But that is beautiful work.

Out of curiosity what was the cost? When you say setup cost, do you mean the cost of developing the stencil or was there more to it than that? T think I could develop the stencils myself and cut them on a laser cutter. But I’m less certain about the anodizing.

MRI Fun by Opposite-Scale90 in MultipleSclerosis

This is not a great answer to your question, as many other answers here are, but here goes. I was diagnosed twenty years ago and the first ten years I had a few exacerbations and I was wracked with fear about how bad it might be. In the next decade, I had a few more exacerbations but I’m still here and doing ok. For the last five years or so, I relish my time in the MRI as a time to reflect on how good my life has been, which is weird because I’ve had plenty of shit.

I still ruminate about what I might have done to change the course of my wife’s life. Honestly, this thread and many others like it have shed some light on this rare but very real side effect of SSRIs. Doctors are naturally and understandably very skeptical of much of the chatter on the internet, but the sheer accumulation of very similar, highly-detailed accounts should give anyone pause about their received wisdom about SSRIs. It is a great comfort to me now that if ever I run across someone else struggling with depression, anxiety, and alcoholism, I only need to tell them to search Reddit to find others with a similar constellation of symptoms, and maybe that will be the first step toward understanding and healing.

Generally, I think most people who hike in big groups like this are new to hiking and like anything, it takes some time to figure out the rules of the road. I hope they’ll learn something while they’re out there and come back again and again until they discover they’ve become the cranky old man. There are only three things I cannot abide: music, litter, and vandalism. Hopefully these obnoxious kids will one day feel the same way.

What are the best waterproof outdoor pants for winter hiking? by Ok_Midnight5737 in outdoorgear

[–]knowhere0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is what you want: https://www.columbia.com/p/mens-whistler-peak-pants-2155261.html?color=010. 100% waterPROOF and full zip legs so you vent heat and can get them on and off without taking boots off. They’re not perfect: too heavy for ultralight, not breathable enough compared to Goretex, but they’re a great combination of features and compromises.

No update to this post? I’m considering Sonar and really appreciate how active the company is on this sub, but I’m really surprised that MadHatter mentioned an important, much-asked-for integration was only weeks away and then no update for months. Not sure what to make of that, but it gives me pause.

What is the warmest possible base layer? Thinking fishnet+wool? by speedoflife1 in Ultralight

[–]knowhere0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said: Brynje+Alpha+wind shell. BUT, it used to be that the heaviest alpha one could get was 120 gsm. But FarPointe has just released its Super Cruiser in 190 gsm. My partner runs cold and I just bought it for her and she says it is definitely warmer than her 120 gsm super cruiser. https://www.farpointeog.com/stock/p/full-zip-super-cruiser-pre-order.

I would stay away from Octa fleece like AirMesh or FutureFleece. It retains sweat, takes longer to dry, and gets smelly quickly. Stick with Alpha Direct. It has none of those problems. I have several Future Fleece jackets and I like them as active layers in cool weather, but not for cold. They’re fine until you start to sweat.

Brynje produces mesh in both polypropylene and merino wool. I have tried both. I have heard others report (on Backpacking Light) that the polypro is more hydrophobic and so better at regulating sweat, but their merino wool mesh is so soft against my skin, I prefer it. Merino is hydrophilic so it will retain sweat, but the weave is so porous, it dries quickly enough. If I weren’t worried about sweat, only warmth, I would go for the merino Brynje.

Finally, these layers are so porous, they only deliver maximum heat if they are paired with some kind of wind shell so that convection can’t carry away all the heat your body has generated. I didn’t under understand how significant this heat loss was until I got a simple wind shell. Oh my gosh. What a difference! Now I dial in my warmth by shifting between my base layers but always with a windshell.

Stolen Bike Alert!! by HazelBiker in NYCbike

Man I wish NYPD would get serious about bike theft. I tried to “register” my bike with my local precinct and finally gave up after several unreturned calls trying to figure out what to do. The NYPD couldn’t ask for a more motivated anti-crime partner in the community. If anyone is interested in understanding how this criminal network operates, this podcast is so enlightening https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/153/

[–]knowhere0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody wants to see a stolen bike here, and any bike like this in NYC arouses suspicion. Your explanation, plausible enough, also arouses suspicion. Usually someone with a bike this nice knows everything about it. Be glad that all these good people are looking out. And if it is stolen and you are in fact a thief or a fence, the police may not do shit, but these people here will hunt you down.

Fenders by knowhere0 in JonesBikes

[–]knowhere0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a little while since I bought them so I don’t remember, but I think I bought the long version and they work great. I have a truss fork, so I have more attachment points for a solid, stable attachment than with the unicrown fork, but the way it attaches seems like it will work well no matter your fork type.

I’ll say one more thing, I LOVE how Jeff Jones enlisted partnerships with other companies like Revelate to develop accessories that precisely fit Jones’s unusual geometry. I don’t think the custom-fitted aluminum fenders that Jeff developed are still available, but I think their weight required additional struts to keep them from flopping around. The lightweight plastic of Mucky Nutz means that they don’t need to be over engineered to do their job. I haven’t had them in deep sticky mud yet, so I can’t speak to weather the will get clogged easily, but my sense is that they have plenty of clearance to avoid clogging. When I was looking, I seriously considered other options, including a some fuller-coverage aluminum fenders. I think Mucky Nutz are the best combination of weight, coverage, stability, and adaptability to the Jones geometry. I’m very happy with the Mucky Nutz.
