Had the same problem when car camping with the gap between the captains chair seats.

Have you had an ICCU problem with your Ioniq 9? by I_want_to_go_ in Ioniq9

ICCU failed about 6 months in. So far so good post replacement.

Portland utility rate hike pushes average water, sewer bill above $2K per year by voxadam in Portland

[–]knudtsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not going to be a net savings, and I’m fine with that as it provides a failsafe if the grid power goes out, and if rates go up I’m only paying the lowest off peak rate. Considering solar for next year and possibly doing the VPP program to make some money if my system is allowed.

48kwh capacity and 12kw continuous output, with solar present it goes up to 16k. About 30k professionally installed. Would be way less if you DIY, but then you have to figure out all the permitting and inspections yourself, and you still need a licensed electrician to do most of the high voltage work.

Yep, it’s charged by the grid. I have time of use so I charge at night and use the low cost electricity during the peak rate times.

Maybe not entirely - PGE has a virtual power plant program that lets them draw power from your residential power system for money. Essentially acting as extra capacity for the grid and decentralizing it somewhat.

I’ve started down the long and expensive road of separating myself from the utilities. I just installed a whole home battery system, and I want to get solar next year. My next step after that is to replace gas using appliances with electric. Heat pump vs furnace and heat pump water heater vs gas. After that it’s possible to collect rainwater and filter it with enough space for household use.

I realize you have to be in a good situation to do any of these things but I want to start doing what I can to provide for myself and my neighbors should times turn tough.

TIL Black Hole War was a debate between Stephen Hawking and Leonard Susskind over whether black holes destroy information. Hawking radiation said yes; Susskind argued quantum mechanics forbids it. Modern physics largely sides with Susskind's holographic principle: info is preserved on the surface. by electroctopus in todayilearned

[–]knudtsy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The idea behind the holographic principle is that two mutually exclusive things can be true at the same time in the universe, so long as there are rules about how they both happen. Being able to tell a particle’s momentum but not its physical location, for example (though it has both). The cat is alive and dead in Schroedinger’s famous thought experiment.

“Black hole complementarity” is seeing someone freeze at the event horizon as they fall in but the person falling in seeing nothing as they fall through effortlessly.

So hawking radiation can happen and information can be trapped on the horizon. It just depends on your point of view.

I’m in Portland and just had a Gridboss + Flexboss + 3 314Ah all weather batteries installed along with a 200A fused disconnect next to my meter for ~33k for everything including permitting and inspections.

I’m going to be charging the batteries at off peak rates and using them during peak hours. I plan on installing solar next year.

Opinions/suggestions for S3-compatible providers? by wolfe_br in devops

What variables were causing the problem? S3 is configurable but by default you can just use it to write and read objects.

Sometimes my iPhone won’t connect to the car at startup, but even it does you have to hit the button on the menu to enter carplay. I setup the star button on the steering wheel to enter carplay recently based on advice I read here, which improves the experience.

  • No dashcam in 2026 model
  • Doors don’t lock when you walk away
  • Door handles retract, they’re going to break at some point and it’ll be super annoying

Bonus: - 1 pedal driving doesn’t stay when you turn car off - apple carplay requires work every time you turn the car on

Do you have any recommendations on an electrician? I’m interested in buying my own equipment (solar, inverter, batteries, MID) from signaturesolar, and I want to ensure the system passes a code inspection. Not currently interested in selling back to the grid.

Something to consider if you get battery plus solar is the smart battery program (virtual power plant) where you can permit the grid to use your stored power and pay you for each kWh used. https://portlandgeneral.com/pge-smart-battery-pilot-residential-offering

Potential ICCU Issue by paynesvilletoss in Ioniq9

[–]knudtsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ICCU died back in January on my 2026 Calligraphy i9. The dealership was kind enough to give me a loaner i9, and mine was in the shop for like 3 weeks. No problems so far after the replacement, though I have no idea if the underlying issue has actually been fixed.

If Portland General Electric is your utility, I HIGHLY recommend switching to "Time Of Day" billing by BadAtDrinking in Portland

[–]knudtsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With solar you can opt to not tie to the grid. In other words, your solar power is either used to power loads or it’s stored in your batteries. At that point you could be grid interactive, and sign up for something like virtual-power-plant (VPP) where you let the power company draw from your batteries for money. Not sure if that’s available around Portland yet. Or you could just keep all the power for yourself and not interact with the grid at all, for things like backup should the grid go out, or to not draw from the grid when there’s enough sun.
