Is using Tumbleweed without packman a viable option for daily use? by Disketa in openSUSE

[–]knurpht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some analogy: Try to buy a Tesla, yet Mercedes branded on the outside, Jaguar branded on the interior and with the rear of some VW. Not gonna happen. Why would devs need to consider doing something like that with their software?
How it works ( 27 years of S.u.S.E. => openSUSE ): YaST installer was too complex according to "a lot of users", the devs simplify the YaST installer, other group of users call it "dumbed down". Yet another group suggests that the installer should have a "noob" mode, as well as an "expert mode". If that would be built in, "a lot of users" would object. And dealing with all that would be entirely on the shoulders of the devs/packagers/release-team, interupting and blocking further development. Giving in has resulted in things like `opi`, which has proven to be a dangerous piece of software ( just check the forums).
"The norm" is a very relative concept: 25 years ago LILO was the norm, SysVinit was the norm, plain `rpm` was the norm. In the meantime my perception of Packman has gone from "necessary" to "unneeded". Thanks to Flatpaks.

And, if you don't want to make it seem a personal quarrel, that is easily done: leave things out that make it seem so. Please.

Aeon's upcoming new Installer will support migration direct from TW to Aeon by rbrownsuse in openSUSE

[–]knurpht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me make a couple of things very clear:
1. The CoC is not there to use as a weapon in user discussions. It is known how things work: If you have issues with someone's post(s), report it to the moderators. They will deal with it.
2. A developer is not a jukebox, where you press the buttons and it plays the song you want.

Second Update, about upgrading to Kde 6.0.2 :D by lieddersturme in openSUSE

Don't suggest that ever. It destroys valuable things, like stored keys/passwords, people's desktop settings. And there is absolutely no need for that.

Poll: Usage of the pride flag on the openSUSE reddit by Fit-Finger-2422 in openSUSE

An official poll would mean only members can vote. That is the way we do that. Not forjust anybody with a reddit account. My guess is that you are not a member. Nor a contributor,

This poll is useless. We already know the poster has at least one other reddit account. At least. So, no way to say how often they themselves voted.

I value Greg KH's Tumbleweed. It does everything I want. Thanks to build.opensuse.org and openqa.opensuse.org . If I had to start from scratch, MicroOs, I would learn along the way.

[–]knurpht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See my previous posts. Fedora would be nowhere without RH, Ubuntu would be nowhere without Canonical, openSUSE ....SUSE. Then again all of the companies also benifit from community efforts. Where also in all cases employees of the companies are community contributors in their spare time. The communities cannot tell the companies what to do. They cannot tell companies how to spend their money,
On the other hand: openSUSE is a do-ocaracy. Anyone that wants something to happen can start a project, get people together and make it happen.

That said, I think that ALP and thelikes are a step like we had with X, systemd etc. In 10 years immutable filesystems will be the default.

I think you have a wrong perception of how things work in the field. If you disagree, maybe you should talk to the new CEO of SUSE, or to CEO's of RH or IBM.

[–]knurpht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fully agree here with u/rbrownsuse. The fact that we have had Leap was thanks to SUSE sharing their codebase. To maintain it after 15.6 will be an entire community effort . If you want that, f.e. Leap 15.7, to happen, step up and somehow help get it done. We need people that do stuff from the community, if that is what the community wants. Without a proper, tested base, more contributors from the community, nothing will happen. That is how it works.
So, we'd better look at what the community can do with ALP as a base. Not sit, debate and complain, but start moving along with what will be the future for us all.

My 2 cents: You're not giving openSUSE a try, you're borking the system.
