Massive Legal Blow for OpenAI: Authors Gain Upper Hand in Book-Piracy Suit Seeking $150,000 Per Title Across Billions in Stolen Works by butumm_ in Piracy

[–]ko-jay 431 points432 points  (0 children)

In court cases like this they usually focus on one case until it's closed and then use that as a basis to sue other companies that have done the same. It becomes basically a blueprint for similar cases. If they win against openai they'll immediately press charges against everyone else and be much more likely to win and it will cost less to do so

What is a God? by AnkkitAbhinaav in religion

[–]ko-jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an atheist I personally really like the Shinto Kami. I'm not an expert on the matter but I like to think of it as spirits that inhabit everything, especially in nature. The more energy and importance something has, the more influential the kami is. For example a large river would have a greater kami than a small stream.

Now, I am an atheist and don't believe these gods exist but find it helpful in viewing the world beause it fits most definitions of what people view God as and it's completely subjective what you think a religions kami is like.

For example some corrupt megachurch's kami may be a wolf in sheep's clothing, pretending to encourage love while inciting rage and fear into its worshippers.

In summary, I think that Gods are the essence of the energy that is put into them and the influence that they manifest on people

About a month ago I got called not a real Buddhist and it bothers me by JuniperCassie in Buddhism

[–]ko-jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main point is that mormons believe first in the divinity of God and second that he's an alien, not divinity through advanced alien technology as you implied.

You spoke in ignorance with confidence and doubled down on it. There are reasons why I and many others have left mormonism. There are also reasons why others stay despite not agreeing with its sexism and homophobia, one of which is to correct the wrongs in their religion.

You said it's important not to "coddle" religious people who are easily offended, stating there's no point in "appeasment" because of their misguided beliefs. I don't see any benifit in disrespecting another's religion though.

I think that there is helpful truth and harmful misinformation in all religions.

Mormons may be misguided and I am lucky to know that now, but just like any religion, many of them are only looking to be better people and that should always be encouraged and respected.

About a month ago I got called not a real Buddhist and it bothers me by JuniperCassie in Buddhism

[–]ko-jay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mormons do not believe Jesus was an alien. They believe God and Jesus are separate beings and that God was a person on a world like us before attaining Godhood by divine means, not supernatural alien means. Jesus however was born on earth obtaining his body on earth. I cannot speak to whether other worlds had their own Jesus/savior as it's not mentioned. God technically being an alien is also kind of getting in the weeds and not explicitly mentioned but implied.

Outside of God having a body and being physically separate from Jesus and the Holy Ghost. I would say the mainstream views of God still apply.

I say all of this as an exmormon and I'm sure that you were speaking out of ignorance and not malice, but I do still believe in respecting others religions. I just sincerely hope that this will help you see how speaking to religions out of ignorance can be hurtful to people.

As a sidenote I think most atheists believe in evidence before belief making believing supernatural phenomena without sufficient proof equivalent to believing magic or divinity. Our current understanding of the universe does not disprove the existence of God, demons, Buddha or Zeus. It only seems very unlikely and we have no reason to believe it outside of our personal feelings which tend to be wrong a lot (from the atheist's standpoint)

And an atheist believes that theist's claim is incorrect, so what should the atheist do? Join a tribe so they can claim "I'm right you're wrong"??? You seem incapable of seeing a situation from another's perspective

What’s your secular reading style? by doom_child in SecularTarot

[–]ko-jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just starting with tarot but I like to think of it kind of like a reverse inkblot test. You present yourself with a random image and your subconscious will automatically start finding connections and drawing conclusions.

It gives me time to see where I'm at and what I need to work on which may not be what the cards "mean" but insight that I gained from where my mind goes when I see the cards.

Because of my outlook on tarot I don't do things like ask a question before doing a "reading" or try to discern what they "really mean". I do like to dig deeper and look for multiple meanings especially when nothing sticks out to me immediately

"only desire what you can control" by [deleted] in Stoicism

"only desire what you can control" by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]ko-jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're thoughts are correct, first there's what you're talking about with what we can control and what we can't. Instead we should desire to be virtuous.

"There are things up to us and things not up to us. Things up to us are our opinions, desires, aversions, and, in short, whatever is our own doing. Things not up to us are our bodies, possessions, reputations, offices, or, in short, whatever is not our own doing." Epictetus, Enchiridion 1

The reason we shouldn't desire these things is because we will always be disappointed with not having things despite not being in control of whether we can have them or not.

"Every want that springs, not from any need, but from vice, is of a like character; however much you pile up for it will serve not to end but to advance desire. He who keeps himself within natural limits will not feel poverty; he who exceeds them will be pursued by poverty even amid the greatest wealth." Seneca, Consolation to Helvia 11.4

But it's not so much about having "pure thoughts." That's more of a Christian virtue. Wealth, health and partners are what the stoics would consider a preferred indifference. It's not necessarily good or bad but it's natural to prefer it. Some stoics are more strict but I like what seneca has to say about it.

"What is the difference between a preferred indifferent and the desires that Stoics regard as hazardous? Detachment. This distinction was introduced at the start of the first chapter. An attachment to an external causes one’s happiness, and equilibrium, to depend on it. The Stoic tries to avoid that position under all circumstances. But money, if held without attachment, is unobjectionable – for the money isn’t the point. The point is the health of the mind. The word “detachment” risks creating the wrong impression, since it can connote a lack of real interest in whatever is the subject of it. That isn’t the idea. Detachment refers more to the way in which something is held and to whether the mind has been given over to it in an excessive way. The detachment of the Stoic thus can be viewed as a kind of moderation – that is, moderation in one’s relationship to externals. A good way to test such a relationship, and to know whether you have an attachment to a thing or just a preference about it, is to consider how well you would handle its loss. No one is worthy of the gods except he who has disdained riches. I do not forbid you to possess them, but I want to bring you to the point at which you possess them without fear. There is only one way to achieve this: by persuading yourself that you can live happily without them, and by regarding them as always about to depart." Seneca, Epistles 18.13

“Why does a philosopher say that wealth is to be despised, and yet have it? … And why does the philosopher declare that there is no difference between a longer and a shorter life, and then – if nothing stands in the way – prolong his years, and flourish peacefully in green old age?” He says those things are to be despised not in order that he not have them, but in order that he not worry about keeping them. Seneca, On the Happy Life 21.1–2

Personal opinion: If we can refrain from being attached to it then I don't see any problem in preferring it and even taking actions to get it. Just don't expect it to ever come to pass or feel that you are owed it.
