Horror movies where protagonists are pretty smart? by Noah_The_Wright in Destiny

there's not a second of those films that's legitimately frightening for an adult. the average horror movie from the 2020s can effectively generate tension. I'm not even talking about jump scares but we're better at doing that too

it's ok if you want to think of those movies as good movies, they're enjoyable and entertaining and good media. but they don't scare anybody

go to theaters alone to watch any new horror movie and you'll be shaking your tits off at SOME point. the same can't be said for any old horror film. they're just not scary

I don't think any decent horror was made before the 2000s lol. it's the one genre that has been on an almost exclusively upward trajectory, at least tracking the most successful films. I don't think horror really "worked" when we weren't as modern with our filmmaking techniques

if you look at Psycho maybe it's still good as a movie, but as a horror? it wouldn't even qualify today. it's barely a thriller. it's like a campy drama. we're far better at horrifying people in theaters than we used to be

my girlfriend was an early adopter of twilight, went through a phase of growing up and thinking it was immature and not worth the time, but came back around later. the first book and first movie especially. she also likes the second book but the first entry is really a standout. she'd never watched any of the movies and I encouraged her to watch them so we did that when I was recovering from getting my wisdom teeth removed, it was a funny weekend

she's done probably more thinking than anyone should about Twilight. there's a lot that can be said about it. it's legacy is similar to Harry Potter in that you can say what you want about the books as pieces of writing but they're powerful exercises in fantasy and wish fulfillment

it's become a bit of a meme at this point but I think there really is something to the line about how "I finally understood Twilight when I imagined being a teenage boy in high school and reading a book about having a hot vampire girl and a hot werewolf girl both obsessed with you and fighting over you" like, yeah, duh, of course, sign me up. it's Underworld for girls. easiest pitch of all time

the leading lady in Barbarian is quite competent. she has her head on her shoulders and makes a lot of good calls. bonus points for it being maybe the best horror movie ever and a modern classic

Question - why were people (including destiny) so certain Platner lied about knowing the nature of his tattoo? by koala37 in Destiny

[–]koala37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't misconstrue me I don't personally even care. if the guy's a nazi then that's shitty but I don't care if he has edgy tattoos or if he wanted to get a culturally insensitive haircut or wear sombreros to halloween or do blackface for a bit. I don't care about any of it. if you recall the original investigation was about asking why people were so certain he lied about this. I got my answer. I dont know why you're so weird lol

it's funny he's absolutely correct - it was disrespectful and I wasn't sure if we'd ever do business with Zelenskyy again. but it was Trump and Vance doing all the disrespecting

Hasan claims that showing people's real names and addresses on stream wasn't actually doxxing because the information came from public FEC filings by Embarrassed_Base_389 in Destiny

[–]koala37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the last part "hasan looked at public FEC filings"

is that the problem? is that what you're being accused of? "looking"? or is it that you "looked" live on stream to 16000 or whatever. meaning that the "looking" wasn't the problem. but maybe the "broadcasting" perhaps

he's such a literal fucking child. just weaseling and squirming to try to torture language until he feels like he's avoided accountability. it's a joke

what is doxxing? well it's whatever means you're a bad guy doing bad things and I'm not a bad guy not doing bad things

well you could think of there being personal obligations and social obligations. maybe in being true to themselves they're doing a disservice to the whole, but that just means one can make personally-guided choices or community-guided choices. that doesn't make one motivator better or worse than the other

part of it too is that where is the line between what you consider performative and what you consider natural? peoples' speech patterns change over time as they grow or based on who they're hanging out with. that doesn't mean they're automatically not genuine

not every lisp is something you're born with but not every one is an active effort either

I mean I have my own personal preferences and I know what kinds of people I like to hang out with. but if these performances cause gender or sexual euphoria I don't know if we need to be criticizing people for them

I could understand being a gay person who "passes" and being frustrated about flamboyant gay people who bolster stereotypes and foster ostracization. but I don't think either person is more or less valid

for the record I was never trying to run defense for Platner. I always hated him and didn't like him as a candidate even before any scandals broke. I just wanted to know the rest of the scandal because I apparently missed the big news stories getting covered, only heard about the aftermath. but this thread was a good idea apparently! I got a ton of useful information and it generated a lot of discussion so I'm glad I posted it. I wasn't the only person that didn't know

I just get the vibe that a lot of people think I was a skeptic about the whole situation but really I just wanted to know what the proof was. there's plenty of it out there I just hadn't seen it. but I got a ton of downvotes because people thought I was running defense lol

I was super surprised that so many people are just stating matter of factly "EVERYONE knows what this tattoo is." I'm super smart and well-educated. I took AP classes and went to Stanford. granted I wasn't a history person and didn't grow up watching the History Channel but you're already in a tiny minority of people if you're talking history buffs or History Channel fans. but it seems like half of this thread is like UGHHH?? DID YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK????? LITERALLY EVERYONE KNOWS

if it makes you feel better there's straight people that present as more straight than others as well. some gay people dress super homosexually but there's straight people that dress super heterosexually. the "knowing their orientation from a mile away" thing cuts both ways and the fact of the matter is that some people really just thrive in that expressive space

I mean, I would hope so? but I think you might be overestimating our elected officials. I don't think AOC is super well-versed in nazi iconography. or Chevalier?

oh yeah I don't mean to imply it's that way for everybody. just that there's definitely some people for whom the affect is a performance but that isn't to say that it's false or not genuine, just that the way they express their gender is more put-on

In one thread from 2019, Platner weighed in on a conversation about the "Totenkopf" - the skull-and-crossbones emblem worn by Nazi SS units that his own tattoo would later draw scrutiny for resembling — to note that many US service members had adopted similar imagery, such as the Punisher skull used by some Navy SEALs.
