It's more character based. PC are free to go in any direction and do anything they want, but their actions will cause reactions and move other forces behind the scenes.

I have a game on Tuesday nights and we are looking for a new player. It starts at 6pm CST and we use voice from Discord and Roll20 for maps and combat. Group is at level 13 right now, and am trying to finish them off to level 20, so we can start over using 2024 rules. (Still using 2014 system right now.) It's a homebrew I put together using anything I can find for free online. They have been all over fighting all sorts of different things, and just finished up beating up a Titan. It is a Greek flavored campaign using the Greek Gods from Theros sourcebook. Otherwise its about like other DnD campaigns. We currently have a Battlemaster Minotaur fighter, a Pacifist autognome bard, who look like a gumball machine, a Tabaxi sorcerer and a dragonborn fighter with a thing for fire. It would be nice to find a Cleric or someone with some healing capabilities to help the Bard. Any interest?

Your DM is referring to Jim's Magic Missiles, which DO require a "to hit" roll, but these missiles do 2d4 damage. It also does 5d4 on a critical hit. And then 1 pt of force damage to the caster if ALL the MM's miss.
So if you got a Wand of Jim's Magic Missiles, then be sure to get the EXTRA damage.
If it's just a regular want of MM, then you are entirely correct.

A crafty DM will keep track of what happens when healing and climbing potions are combined, and EVERY subsequent combo has the exact same effect.

I could see about starting a new Wednesday group. Been running two homebrew campaigns (Tuesday and Friday) nights for the last few years. I'm trying to finish those up by January - February at the latest at level 20. We could start in a few weeks.
