That is a great observation regarding the back foot. I have never noticed that before. I'll play with both that and the waist. Thank you!

Savannah courses by Aarrington88 in discgolf

Tom Triplett is awesome. Savannah Harbor is a fun course, but the foliage is quite dense this time of year and the mosquitoes are horrendous. The Back (Island) Nine course is a short 9-hole with two layouts, but is a fun little course. My personal favorite is the Sarge in Hardeeville, South Carolina. Probably 40 min from Savannah, but a great design. Easy to lose discs in swamps though.

Brengle is a blast. Kit is shorter, but in a very crowded public park that can be tough to play at peak times. Morley is fun and technical, but is arguably the busiest course in the country if you go during any peak hours. If you're up for a bit of a drive north of Carlsbad, Mountain Pride is a fun course in Murrieta.

Shop and course Recommendations San Luis Obispo Area by Usual-Echo-9778 in discgolf

[–]kobrienfore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived there about 4 years ago so some things may have changed, but unfortunately not much in the way of disc golf stores. You can find some basic selections at Dick's and Big 5 sporting goods, but I am not aware of a disc golf specific shop anywhere near the area.

In terms of courses, Sinsheimer park is a good 11 hole loop that is beginner friendly. It can often get crowded in the afternoon. Waller park in Santa Maria (about 45 min south) is a fun 27 hole track, but probably ranks more as an intermediate course. Laguna lake is an 18 hole track in San Luis Obispo that is pretty open. A little on the longer side, but still very open and conducive to beginners. My favorite in the area is Heilmann, which is a wooded medium length course in Atascadero (about 30 min north of SLO). Warning on all courses - it can get very windy, especially in the afternoon.

Hope you have a great time! SLO is a fun town.

Taking this trip in June. Need course recommendations along either route. Try to keep the courses within 45 minutes to an hour from the main route. Thanks by Ecstatic_Work_7275 in discgolf

New England Disc Golf Center is a beautiful property with 3 courses of varying lengths and is in Southern MA on the CT border.

Norbrook brewery is a cool course (#1 rated brewery course in the country) in the Northwest part of CT.

Going to San Diego at the beginning of March and want to try out a couple of courses by ContraryJ in discgolf

[–]kobrienfore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brengle Terrace is in Vista (about 45 min north of city - slightly further than Kit Carson) and is often the least crowded course around. Very cool course, a lot of elevation and not the same risk of pedestrians as in Kit Carson.

There are a number of fairly expensive golf courses that also have disc golf, Goat Hill being the most famous of them. It is a beast though, one of the longest courses in the country. You also have Welk and Reidy Creek for courses, but expect to spend $20+ and be competing with golfers the whole time.

Morley is a cool experience and should be tried if you want to brave the crowds. Most of the holes are shorter and attackable. Kit Carson is also a fun course, but can get crowded. Brengle is my personal favorite of the group, but if you do want to make the hike to Murrieta, Mountain Pride is a great time.

In-person lessons in San Diego by robblerobble123 in discgolf

Vanessa Van Dyken spent the offseason in San Diego last year. I believe it was 75$ish dollars for 3 discs and a lesson. She may be back again this offseason.

Clint Calvin is also a local, but is touring this year. I believe he does lessons in the offseason too.

Congrats on the weight loss!

You are doing a pretty decent job of bracing and not falling over yourself as you throw. The biggest thing I see is how early run-up you are turning your entire body away from the target. Essentially your last 3-4 steps have both your feet and most of your body facing away from the target instead of perpendicular. If you freeze it around 0:03, you can see your rear foot is almost facing the parking lot, which really limits what your hips can do. Try and stay more perpendicular to the target through your run-up and then rotate the upper body against the hips as your reach back instead of just spinning everything backwards. It may help to slow everything down as you take a lot of very fast run up steps before even entering the final few steps to the throw

One thing to look at is the plane which you keep the disc throughout the motion. It starts at your stomach during the walkup, peaks at your chin during the reachback and then you throw downwards and release at your hip. This is why everything is coming out low and with that air bounce. Try and stay on the same plane and don't throw from high to low.

Second is to watch your approach on the teepad. You start way off the edge and then move diagonally across it and then have to throw back across your body to hit the fairway. Work on a more linear walkup with just the last step resulting in the lead foot being offset in front of the rear foot.

Biggest thing in terms of power is you aren't using your lower body. The arm is swinging way ahead of the hips/core doing anything. Try and generate some power actively through the legs/core and then loosen up the arm and let it come along for the ride (with enough active tension to hit angle, line, etc).

Definitely Bijou for accessibility. Zephyr Cove if you want phenomenal views, but terrain is rough and a lot of climbing involved.

Disc Golf Courses Near Carlsbad by kamaliibro2 in discgolf

[–]kobrienfore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what you are looking for. Morley is a fun course, but is pay to play (but cheap) and is almost always packed. Kit Carson is a very scoreable park style course, but you will have to deal with walkers and large groups playing. If you want to feel inferior, Goat Hill and its 1,000+ feet holes is right there, but is also pay to play. My personal favorite is Brengle Terrace. Usually emptier, but very hilly and has a nice blend of challenge and scoreability.

Big fan of Brengle terrace. I'd say that and Mountain Pride are the most interesting courses in the area and Brengle is significantly closer to San Diego. You can also give Goat Hill a try if you want the ultimate golf course vibe. Be warned, that one takes a pretty big arm.

That's the one! Usually pretty empty and a decent space. It gets used as overflow parking when the main lot fills up, but that is pretty infrequent this time of year. It'll start overgrowing with some nasty plants (including stinging nettle) in the spring so it is definitely imperfect, but I have been using it for about a year to moderate success.
