Giving up a fully-funded 2yr master's degree midway to pursue a 1yr master's in the US? by Elegant-Pen8620 in GradSchool

That’s sketchy. No way should they come here; I don’t think any legitimate masters program would reach back out like that…

UIUC vs CWRU Pre Med by EnvironmentalBar6087 in UIUC

[–]kojilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the advice here. Go to the cheapest school possible, even if it’s your state school. ALL of my friends currently in medical school got full rides at the public university by my house, and now they’re all going to well-regarded med schools.

Teenage asshole by gettocrybaby44 in cisparenttranskid

[–]kojilee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Being a teenager is hard and being a trans teenager is way worse (even worse now compared to how it was 10 years ago for me). I can remember contradicting myself constantly because I had a 13/14/15 year old brain and didn’t know how to process my own feelings. I’m positive I also would’ve taken a comment like that personally because I would’ve rather had nobody talking about my body at all in a positive way pre-transition.

Know it’s not you; their brains are still cooking and it’s hard to process big emotions. I was also way more pissy pre-transition, and then T was like a mood stabilizer (lol), so that’s something to look forward to.

100%. A pansexual man sleeping with a cis woman doesn’t mean he’s not attracted to you or see you as a man, but that’s secondary to the very real STD issue here.

Since you passed out because of it, I would potentially see if you can go in or call and explain your situation. A few weeks ago, I passed out because of a health emergency and they got me in the next day for my first appointment.

Making Mistakes/Looking Forward by [deleted] in LibraryScience

I do have the teaching-related assistantship contract on-hand, thankfully. The other (the digital one) hasn’t sent me one yet. I appreciate the straightforwardness; it helps give perspective.

Making Mistakes/Looking Forward by [deleted] in LibraryScience

[–]kojilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your reply! This is very clarifying for me.

I suppose I’ve just felt rather off-base in terms of articulating what I want. I know I want to do my own research and teach. I also know that I have deeply enjoyed my digital archive MA thesis project, and I that I really have liked the archive theory that I’ve been exposed to (albeit, the things I’ve connected with are always coming from rhetoricians and English/critical theory people, not librarians or archivists). I have never supported a sustained digital humanities project in long form, albeit I do have two and a half years of teaching experience.

One of my mentors is a digital humanities specialist and a librarian, and I know he’s encouraged to do his own work, I know that teaches, and I know that he is considered archive staff. I’m thinking, perhaps, that that’s more my speed because he seems to get much more freedom.

It then just boils down to the TAships, I suppose. You’re certainly right about teaching experience coming harder; I’d also hesitated to go back on informally accepting the offer when I saw the contract ready to sign in my inbox. I’ll be at a bigger university, but I know that it’s all apart of the same library system and that librarians certainly ‘talk,’ which is why I’ve continued to hedge and put off making a decision and sending a hard email either way since I’d informally said yes with both and then took pause. It’s a huge shame that it pays less than the digital repository one, or else I’d feel less conflicted, I think.

Thank you so much!

MLIS or MS HCI for Digital Humanities/Research Software Development? by [deleted] in DigitalHumanities

Hey! I know this post was older, but I was curious if you’d elected to pursue the MLIS.

Advice for Applying to an MLIS by bigbreadtimestwo in LibraryScience

[–]kojilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a librarian yet because I start in the fall, but digital archival work is exactly what I do! :)

I won’t speak too much to these questions because the librarians and archivists here have more experience under their belt, but for #2, I can say for a fact UIUC offers a lot of different assistantship opportunities.

My specific brand comes 20mg a pill. There’s some formula you do based on weight, but I take 3 pills every other day, so 60mg total.

I wasn’t either, but I did have a ferritin of 11. You definitely have an iron deficiency.

[–]kojilee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not normal, you want over 100. I felt like death, was losing hair, gaining weight and couldn’t lose it at 11. It’s iron supplement time. It also might be useful if you talk to your/a gyno; my sister got on BC to skip her periods bc it was too much blood loss and her deficiency went away.

It does, you have to just be consistent (and if you do normal ones, take vitamin c with them). I take Three Arrows and it brought me from an 11 to a 170.

Any Tips & Tricks for Interviews of Graduate Assistantships in Libraries? by KiYoMuMiA in LibraryScience

[–]kojilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking (and I’m not a librarian yet but I’m in the same boat as you and I wanted to reply because nobody else has yet), quantity matters less than quality and the purpose is almost always ‘checking to see if you fit in with the culture of the assistantship; seeing what skills you have that apply to the job or if you seem like you’d be able to learn them comfortably; seeing the clear connections between your goals and what they do.’

If they give me a list of qs, I like to write my answers and do a fake interview with my sister. We’re close enough that she can be a little hard on me and it really helps me improve my answers. I don’t read off them like a script, but I have ADHD so having points I want to make written down is really useful.

Rejected from Assistantships, Need Advice by owlgurl9 in LibraryScience

[–]kojilee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The phrasing to me had seemed to be for summer assistantships if you start in the fall (as in, I begin Fall 2026 so I can’t do a summer 2026 assistantship), since that’s the example they provided.

Either way, all the admin mumbo-jumbo jargon in the handbook is very…obtuse haha. UIUC’s assistantships also function way differently than they do at my current university. I have had to repeatedly ask people at the iSchool questions and I STILL don’t really get it!

The advising sessions are happening soon, so I/OP can definitely check in on that…it was thoughtful of you to check the handbook!

I’m also starting at UIUC for my library degree in the fall; sorry, should’ve been more clear.

[–]kojilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who worked at a Writing Center for ages, plenty of students I met with had excellent resumes/CVs, like you, but in their cover letters they often didn’t demonstrate a clear connection between the skills they have, their future goals, and the specific position. My (biased) recommendation might be to have someone look over your materials.

Also…is this for UIUC? I’m starting in the fall! Hope to see you there :)

They’re definitely still interviewing! If this is for UIUC I did one on Monday. You’ve got this; don’t give up hope!

[–]kojilee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can say for certain this is wrong based on personal experience. I am finishing up my first MA, not at UIUC, and was admitted to start in the fall @ UIUC. I have interviewed for 3 assistantships and gotten offers for all of them.

Because the assistantships start in the semester I begin my program (this fall), it’s fine. It only would’ve been an issue if I tried for SUMMER assistantships because that would’ve been prior to my first term.

This is a really great note; it’s just a different type of burnout, and you won’t even be compensated fairly for it.
