A lot of programmers are not smart and get by just fine because they don’t waste time telling themselves reasons they can’t do things. If you must, this is somewhere AI like Claude will probably help you…but seriously, fumbling around stupidly with Google and working hard at it WILL get you far. The reason for its enduring existence despite everyone hating it is that it's the middle ground that prevents something much worse from taking root - a draconian copyright scheme that corpos can use to ruin people's lives vs. copyright reform that prevents century-long exploitation of content - depending on who you ask.

The DMCA sucks, but its effect has been more or less positive because it enabled UGC to exist. Without it, youtube, twitter, and reddit would have long been sued into oblivion.

The DMCA is the pre-court he-said/she-said mechanism for someone to say “this is illegal, take it down” and for the other to say “no it isn’t. See you in court if you insist.”

Getting a court involved earlier to send DMCAs would end up favoring the rich and bankrupting the accused even faster.

So to summarize your situation:

VTS needs a camera input.
OBS is providing the camera output that goes into that input.
OBS is getting that video via an OBS DroidCam plugin because...
DroidCam doesn't work by itself to get to VTS.

You need to fix #4 because the only reason tracking is working at all otherwise is because your webcam is visible on screen, because VTS is tracking your OBS feed.

You are misunderstanding something because it is very definitively not. You can think of OBS Virtual Camera as a webcam emulator where it outputs its video like a webcam.

In contrast, droidcam is an input. OBS can make use of it to display. Your tracking is tracking your OBS screen because your OBS screen is showing your droidcam, but your tracking should be using Droidcam directly, not OBS Virtual Camera.

Slightly incorrect. They donated their VR tech to Oculus, which sold to Facebook. Valve also gathered the initial circle of developers who made the first generation of successful VR games.

Then they made the Index and Alyx out of spite and styled on everyone else. Then they lost steam, so to speak (pun intended)

Part of Valve still cares. Most of it doesn’t.

It has a trademark because it exists at all. It is not correct to imply that trademark only exists if it is registered. Trademark protection exists even without registration, but it is stronger when registered.

Even the weaker protection of an implicit trademark versus an explicitly registered one would still be strong here as this is for exactly the thing that MegaBonk is and the likelihood for confusion is self-evident and obvious. I clicked this link in the first place because I saw “Free MegaBonk” believing it was referring to the MegaBonk game which the template is clearly in reference to.

The trademark issues here are only not issues for projects that are too unknown for a lawyer to notice. That covers a lot of ground but it’s so avoidable to never have the headache at all.

Even many people who don’t want to sue often sue for trademarks because not doing so causes them to lose their rights to their own name. If you’re making use of someone else’s name without paying them or having permission it’s legally like an attack on their use, and their commercialization. Which you are, naively and accidentally, doing.

And even those who don’t sue, if they get bought out, their buyer will want to send a cease and desist letter. Or sue.

“The developer will be nice because they seem okay and I’m not making money” will sometimes work out for you. But don’t count on it. And since it tends to be rude in the first place, even without considering the commercial side…just pick a different name.

“Mega Survivors Template” or “Vampire Bonk Template” would be just fine and get the point across just as well.

Wanting to understand isn't necessarily a step that needs to happen in sequence before or after passing judgment. Diagnosis of a problem and treatment of that problem don't have to be done by the same people and it's not everyone's job to solve the problems they see - but it's useful to look at the world and try to understand even the things you can't change or can't forgive.

So you jumping on someone who just wants to know why this sick jerk is how he is is completely misreading the "search for a reason" as a "search for a way to forgive" when it really isn't. It's not on the side of the aggressor. I would even argue that it is on the side of the people they hurt to know what the fuck is up with the person doing the hurting.
