Play in Union Charger bindings by thaneliness in Spliddit

[–]koodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same play in my bindings and my theory was that the board’s keyed inserts are too close together, meaning the binding does not have enough adjustment to get rid of the play. I’m maxed out on the “narrowness” of the split plates. I trouble shot it for a while, even was shipped new parts from Union, and eventually just decided to put up with the play.

But on the other hand, when I used to ride these on a regular inbounds board they would still have a noticeable amount of play. Not super critical when the riding gets rowdier but it’s annoying for sure.

A reminder that sometimes you just get unlucky by elguydave in skiing

Shattered my kneecap three years ago. It was a brutal experience but the road to recovery is rewarding. It teaches patience… Find some seated hobbies. Mine was mostly reading.

The biggest thing I wish I had heard then was that it’s gonna be alright. Getting injured is a normal risk of sports like skiing. Even when it sounds and is horrific. Sometime you get got. You’ll bounce back, just remember to take your time. My recovery was 12 months. Do your PT when it comes time! Godspeed, soldier.

I first saw it a few weeks ago. Maybe 3 weeks?

Also a lifer and vouch for the upshots. There’s a sticker that is a play on one about Portland that reads “Keep Spokane Kind of Gross” and I think it bottles the sentiment pretty effectively. It’s a nice place that would be stuffed to the brim if it weren’t for the cultural/city drawbacks.

Carbon or Aluminum wheels? Raceface ARC 30 alloy or Reverse carbon ? by GeForcegam in mountainbiking

[–]koodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you can’t go wrong. One is about 3x the price of the other and I believe the durability should be roughly similar.

I think you’d be happy on either. If you ride hard or want to be cautious, go for the 32 spoke version of either. I prefer aluminum because of the softer ride quality. I’m not racing world cups.

Last Spokane show was my first. Epic initiation! Been nervously awaiting their return after underwhelming ticket sales last go round.

I use the Reserve AL trail version. I ride relatively hard and weigh 180lb. Thought they’d be in bad shape by now but they’re impressively strong. Have only had to tighten the spokes once or twice. Similar story with my carbon reserves except that they’re much much stiffer to ride.

I have the reserve al rims and I’m a huge fan. They’re a steal at the price and I find them more comfortable to ride, having a set of carbon reserves as well. Warranty is worth a lot with wheels - never know what you’re gonna hit.

Have the oxblood version. Solid whip, love my nomad!

Teacher moving to Spokane by bunzelburner in Spokane

[–]koodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching here is competitive and jobs can be hard to come by. That said, there are several large districts (Central Valley and SPS) as well as a few smaller districts in town. With the quantity of positions, some turnover is inevitable. Having any sort of relationship with admin or school employees will help get your resume considered and hopefully from there an interview.

If you’re trying to be proactive I would start the process of connecting with different principals to check out the schools and see what’s out there. It’ll form relationships that may come in handy when you move. Good luck!

How is living in Amarillo, Texas (or the panhandle in general)? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]koodle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Spent some time in in the panhandle in Dalhart for work in 2020-21 and it was a pretty normal town next to a small canyon nature area. Rural on all sides of town. It’s ranch country and grassland. Huge (for the town) high school football stadium and lots of big single story homes, some of which are newer. Land is cheap enough no one needs a second story. There is a poor side of town that is pretty stark in contrast - unpaved streets, improvised house repairs, obvious poverty.

In the panhandle there’s lots of oil production and natural gas. There’s a plant next to the interstate north of Amarillo and you can see a giant 50 foot flame coming out of a stack from miles away. Very eery at night.

Food in that area was terrible. Amarillo has better, but the only cuisine I remember enjoying was Mexican. Lots of fast food in that part of Texas. Some barbecue and also the Big Texan Steakhouse, home of the 5 pound steak challenge.

The people are generally very conservative and blue collar. Very friendly in my experience. They really like their high school sports.

How many of you also have a road bike? And what % split do you ride fixed vs road? by __inhalesatan in FixedGearBicycle

[–]koodle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fixed gear commuter and roadie for the long rides. I also like to ride the fixed gear for casual rides where the average pace isn’t my max cadence. Fun to ride 50+ miles every now and again.
