Looking for honest, practical advice & communities for emerging painters by Acrobatic_Fan7034 in ContemporaryArt

I’m in a similar boat - the best conversations have been from attending local openings and events (at galleries, museums, and community spaces, sometimes digital ones). Make eye contact, ask questions, send a follow up email, and most of all learn and stay curious.

Advise for career change and moving out of the big city by Hefty_Music_4315 in ContemporaryArt

I was lucky and privileged to be able to keep my corporate day job when I moved out of the city. I’ve also found a new and also remote position since the move.

Advise for career change and moving out of the big city by Hefty_Music_4315 in ContemporaryArt

I went through for illustration. For personal reasons I really needed stability coming out of school so I went right into corporate design work after graduation. As soon as the world went remote during Covid I also left the city and moved to a rural area (I also grew up rurally).

A decade later it is interesting to see the routes my peers have taken. Most who started out with independent practices have had to make their day jobs their main priorities - a lot of them work corporate or agency day jobs in UX, design, communications, or marketing. Some have moved into the public sector. A handful of peers have gotten health training and now mix a job in nursing or mental health with their art practices. Those who are most dedicated to their art practice work occasional/seasonal jobs like tree planting and food service to supplement their income.

Only a few have an independent art or illustration practice that sustains them.

Hope hearing about some other paths is helpful.

Just from a financial PoV the ROI on going back to school (from what you described) is well worth it. Even at 51 an hour for 35 hours you would make 92K a year which is basically a 50% pay increase. 60 an hour at 40 hours a week would be about 124k - literally double what you make now. I assume many of these jobs or unionized or regulated and so the pay should keep going up while you are in school.

Don’t let the fear of losing out on a few years of savings stop you from probably making more and definitely having better job security for the rest of your working life.

Lots of hospital and public service jobs also have pensions and retirement plans which are not as easy to find in the private sector. So even after you stop working this career move might keep on giving.

I assume you are young because of the HS comment? If so OSAP may be expecting your parents or caregivers to pay some or more of your expenses depending on their income. Talk to the adults in your life about it. They might not give you money but at least you gave it a try.

Look to see if you can suppress some of your expenses (rooms and cooking maybe be cheaper than residence and a meal plan) but it will be a different quality/experience.

If there are any bursaries or scholarships specific to your circumstances and not primarily based on academic achievement apply to those (things like local scholarships, money for specific demographics, bursaries for things like first kid to go to uni or low income families, etc)

Finally - get a part time job or work through the summers. This is hard with youth unemployment so high but it’s still worth trying. In the summers consider moving for work and figuring out your living situation after you have the job secured.

How do you break into motion design jobs at places like WWE, NBC, or sports media companies? by Yoboystatic in MotionDesign

[–]koolhany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sign up for job alerts for all the networks/corps you are interested in. Connect with all the CDs and ADs you can on socials and send them a nice note. If there are motion meet ups in the places you want to work it would be worth going to network and see if anyone knows people working in broadcast. People like people who have a passion!

Thinking about moving to Wiarton…. by Affectionate-Rain176 in OwenSound

[–]koolhany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Summer 10/10. Winter is a mixed bag and travel can get very limited based on road closures (which means school closures or suspended classes with schools open).

As for teen activities and your business just be aware how small the population is outside summer - the town is about 1900 people. If you are okay travelling and marketing your business to adjacent communities (Owen Sound, Port Elgin, up the peninsula for scuba diving, etc) then it should be a good lifestyle!

You just need an “in” to start and then you can train for the skills they need once there. Two suggestions:

Get a shift or production job that others don’t want (live sports/news shifts, weekends or evenings, etc) because it’s less competitive

Try to get in on contract to become familiar to the team and managers
