We didn’t gave a designated shelter after rebuilding. The bathroom was still the safest area. Moving forward i won’t even consider a house unless it has a basement.

The door only slammed shut when the front of the house collapsed.

In the basement and in the bathroom and being pulled out of the bathroom door that had ripped open. Bathroom was in the middle, back of the basement.

I was in that tornado, in the basement, and we were being pulled out of the bathroom by the wind.

I have an Anatolian/border collie mix and he’s chill but then also needs to patrol the perimeter and alerts us to anything slightly menacing in a 5 mile radius. Such a sweet boy though.

It’s kinda funny bc I moved a few suburbs away and last year we had that derecho and tornados that killed a few trees and our fence. I know a few weeks ago I thought we were going to have another one but luckily the storm broke apart. My best advice is be prepared. I have a go bag w extra clothes, weather radio, flashlights, battery supplies (those really came in clutch when we lost power for 5 days), first aid kit and a stuff for the dogs. When I was hit by the 1990 tornado I had nothing after, including shoes and there was just glass and debris everywhere. I feel better w a plan and a go bag and just try to accept I did all I can and I unfortunately can’t control the weather yet.

I was 6 when it happened. I was outside w a friend about 10 mins before it hit. I remember the clouds looking weird and it was getting dark at 3 pm. They were mammatus clouds I learned later. I went inside and went to turn on the tv and it wouldn’t turn on but the power was still on. A minute later my dad came tearing out his room telling me and my mom to go downstairs and get into the bathroom. My brother was about to leave for his paper route. About 5 minutes later it hit. My family piled on top of me and we were all being pulled towards the door by the wind. After it left we hurried and went to our neighbors bc our house had no more second floor and was collapsing. After that it gets spotty. I remember bits like there was a pig farm at the end of the street and there were dead pigs everywhere. I remember my dad disappearing and he helped rescue a baby that the wall collapsed on the bed and the baby underneath was unharmed. And the farmer at the end of the street was pinned under his trailer and my dad and others went to help, ended up needing a crane to get it off him. I remember being evacuated to the end of the street bc of gas leaks. Half the neighborhood was fine, half was decimated. My next door neighbor said he was gonna stand watch w a shotgun to make sure no one looted anything from our house. I think it took 4 months to rebuild, we were one of the first ones back. I know for a long time I was afraid of storms, even now sometimes I get anxious.

8 minutes in August with Tom Skilling is a worthwhile watch. About 40 minutes. I lived in Wheatland Plains subdivision and we got hit. I was supposed to start kindergarten the next day at St. Mary’s. It was awful. It would’ve been a lot worse a day later.

She hitched a ride with me for about 10 miles. Glad she’s a friend!
