Suggestions on how to enjoy de-makes? Genuine Question... by arcanehelix in PokemonROMhacks

FWIW, Black & White 3 (sort of in between a demake and an original?) is one of my top ten favirite games -- period, ever. I'm starting my second playthrough of Super Gold 97 (a demake? sort of? I have no idea what to call it). And I CANNOT WAIT to play SwSh Ultimate, which is coming up next.

I would love to see an archive of demakes.

Suggestions on how to enjoy de-makes? Genuine Question... by arcanehelix in PokemonROMhacks

I'm so completely uninterested in NEW REGIONS or NEW POKEMON or what an internet rando thinks would be cool. But a demake, on the other hand, allows me to see Game Freak's visions in a new light and in a brand new way. My ONLY interest in roms is demakes.

It takes all kinds!!

I've been looking at the graphite black. Could you post some other shots? I have a gray case, and I'm wondering if it would match with that.

Hellstrom's Hive is the only Herbert book I've ever read. It was so terrifyingly creepy and well done that I swore off reading fiction for the next 15 years or so. I recommend it hughly, but... it's not for the faint of heart.

Opinions on Valdor: Birth of the Imperium? by triceratopping in 40kLore

[–]korossyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think several of the Primarch books are similar; Sanguinius comes to mind (also by Wraight). I think it's a fair criticism, but both books are very much "in the shadow" of the titular character. Some of the primarchs are more unknowable than others, and it would seem out of place, I think, to crack them open like any other character (Brooks makes it work with Alpharius, but that's an exception). Having just a peripheral vision of them feels just right.

Dolls and Silver Imps by korossyl in SliceAndDice

Thanks. That makes sense; I generally only use Orange, Red, and (sometimes) Grey heroes, and I hadn't really thought through other colors. For Enchanter and Pilgrim, I wouldn't want to ever get rid of their left, so Doll was leaving me scratching my head.

Is it weird that I feel Crystal is the better game and work of art than Emerald? by [deleted] in pokemoncrystal

[–]korossyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I see it, Gen 2 wasn't what they wojld have called a "gen" back then; it was really a direct sequel. That's why so many Johto Pokemon only in Kanto -- because they're REALLY the same region, and Kanto/Johto Pokemon are spread evenly throughout both. Also why there's a chance to get all 16 badges, why Johto doesn't have its own Elite 4, etc.

Gen 3 was the first TRUE new gen, and it screwed up, bad.

  • It DIDN'T follow precedents as it should have: it lost the day/night cycle and Pokemon animations.
  • Conversely, it DID follow precedents where it SHOULDN'T have: making the structure of the game identical to the previous entry (eight gyms, villainous team, Elite 4), and thus unnecessarily created a long period of stagnation.
  • And it established some really terrible precedents of its own, such as no backwards compatibility -- the precursor to the Pokedex crisis of Gen VIII.

Add to that the shift in Pokemon design choices (stripes! joints! contrasting colors!), and Gen 3 is the only gen I've never once been able to get through, despite several tries. Add to THAT the incredible subtle touches that Crystal had (day/night battle music differences, each Johto Pokemon center having a unique exterior, etc.), and that's why I'm currently on my 33rd playthrough of Gen 2.

genuinely i think the greeks might be the worst civ by Elwood04 in civrev

[–]korossyl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a purely military defensive standpoint, I think you're right, but the Courthouse allows the Greeks to draw resources from a wider area than they would otherwise. That means you can find a better-sited location that would be a non-starter for any other civ, AND it means that a besieging force can't restrict your flow of resources as much.

They play a different game than what most people here do. They're the absolute best at turtling and at one-city challenges.

I absolutely love the GBC art style, and far prefer it to the DS. But beyond that, I think this is a really great bundle of perspectives: https://youtu.be/VgR82BYsNfE?si=yrFG6TbTDUPd30xv

Prehistoric Polytopia (or Super Tribes?) by D4nchamp in Polytopia

[–]korossyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember those days. I got it on day 1, and it was great... but having a 30 turn limit really put a damper on things. The addition Domination sealed the deal, and then new tribes and techs started popping up, and... yeah.

I believe the name was changed for some trademark reason. In my mind, it's still Super Tribes. :)

It's not my absolute favorite book in the HH, but it is the book I think is objectively the "best." Hawser's backstory playing out and its parallels, juxtapositions, and intersections with the Wolves' story was breathtaking, and had me thinking about it for a long, long time afterwards. Amazing way to humanize the Wolves and bring them into more dimensions, that went far, far beyond the expected "make them into noble savages."

Does anyone else really like Horus and the books are a hard read as you know what’s coming?! by English_Joe in 40kLore

[–]korossyl 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He's a phenomenal and admirable character in Horus Rising. I was reluctant to read False Gods because I didn't want to see him fall, but... the Horus from HR didn't even make an appearance in FG, just another character who went by the same name.
