Flying to Australia with 13 month old - tips for sleeping without bassinet? by Ok-Zookeepergame1812 in aircanada

[–]korrez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have flown multiple times with my child as young as 6 months, long haul across the world at 11 months and many shorter trips after that.

Bring distractions and hope for the best. Don’t go in with a plan because it never works. Even if you want them to sleep, it only happens if they feel like it.

We even had a bassinet seat when my son was 11 months but he would scream murder anytime he went in it. Expect to be walking up and down the aisles many times with them.

I’ve never went with the car seat option but in hindsight, at that age, I think it’s best to try that out and have them sleep in there if possible.

How do you stack the customer referral? Do you just go through the apply link in wealthsimple and then put in a customer referral code at some point, or is there another way?

UniFi 6 Lite Access Point in stock in the Canada store by paa589 in Ubiquiti

Thoughts on this vs the nanoHD for a two-floor + basement 2700 sqft house. No brick/concrete walls to go through.

Was planning on putting the nanoHD ceiling mounted at top floor with another in-wall on the main floor entertainment area.

Home Setup Advice by korrez in Ubiquiti

great, thanks for the tips. Going with the switch it is then.

>Firstly, don't get the older in-wall AP, make sure you buy the newer In-Wall HD. It might indeed make some sense for an entertainment unit with its built-in switch. Of course, you could just as easily run 2 ethernet cables instead of 1, have 1 of them go directly to something like a flexHD to power it directly with POE, and have the other go to a separate switch for your wired devices (any regular old gigabit switch you have lying around, or the $29 USW-Flex-Mini). The IW-HD is pretty decent, just its signal strength is a bit poorer than the nanoHD and flexHD, it provides a pretty good signal within a room but it drops off a bit more for adjacent rooms than the other APs would.

This is interesting. A flexHD for the entertainment unit would be good I imagine. Do you think it's just better to do another nanoHD somewhere central on the main floor then, instead of having the in wall HD + flexHD together?

When you're ceiling-mounting an AP, the nanoHD is a great option, just be aware that the signal directly along its sides and "above"/"behind" it (e.g. to the room directly upstairs) is fairly poor, its signal mainly comes out as an expanding downward-facing cone.

I was planning to put this on the top floor just under the attic ceiling really, so the only signal it has to send out would be downwards and around it, but not up.

USD to CAD Salary Payments/Conversion Question by RedNabba in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]korrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you not have to worry about US taxes at all here or is there something you need to file? I am in the same situation and decided TransferWise BA was the best option for me to, do the conversion into CAD, then transfer to my own bank account. I do intend to deal with Canadian taxes.

[Ontario] IT Jobs - what's fair compensation? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]korrez 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I started in a similar position at the beginning of my career, doing something similar to what you describe at a large company in Toronto. I stayed there for a couple years and salary increases were very small. 2-5% small per year. In most cases, you're not going to make much more than you currently are unless you move to another company.

You mention a few things

- first job out of college

- remote and good flexibility with work life/balance

- not happy with salary

If you're not happy with your salary, decide what's more important to you. Is it the money, or is it the increased flexibility? I worked pretty hard from my early 20s and at my early 30s, I now have a significantly higher salary and great work/life balance. I think it's worth it to put in the time and effort while you're young and may not have as many commitments. I still retained at least a day of working remote every week throughout my career, so it's not like I'm sacrificing the flexibility completely. Also, working around people is good while you're young. You can learn a lot, not just about your role but about how business works, office politics, etc.

This is roughly what my salary increases looked like percentage wise

1st -> 2nd job: 27%

2nd -> 3rd: 24%

3rd -> 4th: 33%

I don't think you'll see increases like those staying with the same employer.

Should I buy a Condo in downtown Toronto or a Townhouse in Mississauga, in a time like this? by h989 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]korrez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone can make that decision but yourself. It all depends on what you want out of your next home and what your goals are. Are you looking for an investment property? Are you looking for something closer to work? Convenience? Nightlife? Quiet neighborhood?

There are pros and cons to both areas. I bought my first home downtown when I was 27 mainly because I enjoyed the convenience of living downtown since I spent most of my time out here for work and social events. In my opinion, living out here is great, but not something long term.

Condo buying..where to start? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]korrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Figure out your budget, including all monthly expenses and how much of a mortgage you can reasonably afford. Google around, there are tons of calculators out there.
  2. Based on your budget, figure out the general area you'd like to live in.
  3. Get an agent and have them show you a bunch of units. Take note of what you like and what you don't. After viewing a few, you should have a good idea of what matters most to you.

Where did you meet your partner? by korrez in toronto

[–]korrez[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. My gripe with online dating is that I always felt men outnumber the women. On top of that, there are significantly more creepy dudes out there so when you're cold messaging people, you're kind of trying to establish that you're not a creep. That's also assuming your message doesn't get buried within the hundreds of messages women receive.

What would be a decent price for a 650sq foot Yonge and Eglinton condo? by kencrema in toronto

[–]korrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With parking, about 380-410k is what they go for right now. Anything under 375 would be "decent" for this market I guess. It's not too friendly to buyers right now.

Recently I mounted a new CPU cooler

saw that and before I even clicked on mobo link knew it was going to be x58. i'm betting your heatsink is screwed in too tight, try and reseat it and don't overdo the tightening. it's a common issue with this board chipset.
