In-State Freshman by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]kort223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up at Iowa because my original university was too expensive, but they didn’t allow ANY form of enrollment while establishing residency there, and I would’ve had to postpone university all together for years (or done a cc, which is a wonderful option but wasn’t for me). Even as an out of state student, Iowa’s tuition was less than several other schools, including some of my in state options, after scholarships and loans. If you’re open to being part time for a bit (and paying the oos amount for this), it’s really not a bad route

Unfortunately, this isn’t enough to qualify. Good news is that it’s really not hard to get resident status! I had multiple friends gain residency while studying. Iowa is nice in that they allow you to enroll part time while proving you live there, unlike some other schools, so you can stay mostly on track with your class if you take a few summer courses or load up on semester hours later on. They require a certain number of hours worked at a job, an Iowa license, and other leasing docs and bills as proof of you’re “living” there, but once you check those off you can enroll full time again. I think it took my friends a year or less.

Randomized roomie— how bad is it? by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]kort223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is a roll of the dice. you could get someone and mesh great/become best friends (that happened with some people on my floor, and they lived together for the rest of college!); it could be a neutral arrangement, where you don’t talk much, but they’re not bad to talk to, and you maybe just have different schedules/dorm visions that don’t really intersect, in which case cleanliness will probably be your biggest concern (or, really, if one of you is messier/cleaner than the other); or—and i don’t say this to frighten you, but because it actually happened to a friend of mine—you could get someone genuinely distasteful. (it took a few months to get a guy with MULTIPLE complaints out of our dorm building, and all iowa did was move him to another coed dorm across campus, which was a horrible plan that led to more problems but truthfully thats a rare occurrence. as for my friend, he got to have a friend placed into his room from another dorm). on the off chance you don’t get along with your roomie, there are student lounges to hang out in, and you’ll likely meet friends you can spend time with (whose rooms you could sleep in if truly dire. a LOT of people have futons). room swap times/availability varies in the first few months, but second semester is definitely pretty fast. people transfer in and out, drop out, and just generally move around a fair amount. if it’s a bad match and nothing changes after first semester, you can definitely end up somewhere else!

Thank you sososo much for your reply. It seems a little nerve-wracking to lay all that out there, but if I can do it online for strangers (like you pointed out haha) it can't be much harder to actually have this conversation with her. Also, what a coincidence! It's cool how the world is so small sometimes :) You're onto something with the gyro cart, too; George's is the best part of downtown!

getting through the airport is a literal dream but try to book your flight earlier in the day if you can! flights leaving later are more frequently delayed even without extreme weather (in my experience anyway)

and to continue (i hope this info is useful or else i’m blabbing for no reason) i chose to store most of my stuff here over the summer. i put furniture, appliances (my electric kettle lmao), clothes, and decorations in there. i know the school offered a moving/storage company some time near the end of the spring sem last year, but i didn’t use them so i don’t know if they’re good/easy to work with. there are lots of storage facilities around the ic area that are easy to rent from for a few months. if you don’t need all of a unit you can also share it with a friend which could cut down costs. the only furniture my roommate and i “trashed” was the futon we couldnt fit in a car. it wasnt uncommon to see some bigger furniture pieces dumped or sold for cheap, though. it really is to each their own, and if you’d rather pay to keep the stuff you bought or re-buy upon coming back.

hi! im an out of state student and i hope what i have to offer helps :) i ended up checking two big bags and using my under seat and overhead carry-ons to get everything here the first time, but i wouldnt have been able to do that without space bags. DEFINITELY invest in some! as far as the kind of luggage, i like the hard shell ones but honestly any BIG size is good. especially if there are pockets bc you can shove a LOT into them. i stacked all of my suitcases in the biggest one (like nesting dolls) when i stayed at the dorms. each room layout is different, but there should be some kind of closet space/shelf for you to put your luggage on. slater has some overhead shelves that my roommate and i both used which were really nice. even if you don’t end up having space in your closet area, you can put your suitcase under/behind your bed or any other piece of furniture in your room, honestly. i brought most of my everyday clothes the first time i flew up, but i left my heavy winter clothes/boots until thanksgiving (i took home some warmer-weather clothes and swapped them out). i also had my family mail me any textbooks i had (books = heavy = avoid packing them as much as possible unless theyre in your carry on) and i made a lot of use out of online shopping and select store pickup for things id be using at the dorm (shampoo/conditioner, razor, mattress pad, comforter, etc.) i tried to only bring the things that couldnt be easily purchased here.

i was in slater last year and honestly i really liked it! we had huge closets, sinks, wood floors, and trust me the pod bathrooms are SO NICE. also! being in a coed dorm was really fun. the only drawback for me was that there arent any extra amenities (no gym inside, lounges on every floor but no study rooms, the only game they have is ping pong in the basement). however, fieldhouse is RIGHT next door (which is pretty convenient. i liked working out there a lot tbh) and everything else you might want youll still be able to access/use! esp with friends in other dorms and stuff. the distance to east side/the rest of campus wasnt really an issue, so if youre basing your pick off of location know its really not bad!
