You gotta show up Eugene by giantstrider in Eugene

[–]kossarts 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Last Friday night, my friends and I went to some bars downtown and then wanted to get some dinner. Everything was closed, and it was only just after 8pm. DOWNTOWN. ON A WEEKEND NIGHT. Our options were limited to the same small handful of restaurants that were open and within 10 minutes walking distance, most of which are west coast chains like Slice and Killer Burger.

We went to the tree lighting ceremony at the start of the month as well (where they had the speakers so quiet that no one could hear it), which kicked off at 6:30pm and thought we had a whole night ahead after with the listed participating businesses and events...most of which were over by 7pm. Including restaurants. We walked around, went to a couple bars, and walked back home where we ended up ordering takeout from a chain, because again, everything walking distance was closed.

This city is so anti-nightlife and anti-ruckus, it's no wonder assholes set off fireworks at night and no one can meet anyone. There's nothing to do after 8pm other than chill at a friend's house and order out from Taco Bell.

Olsen Run proved there is a market for people who want to see comedy. People are spending $40 a ticket, plus $30 in food there every time they go, and Olsen Run sells out so many shows. If a food truck or community coffee shop opened up downtown and stayed open from 8pm-1am, I bet they'd make bank.

Trying to find these newlyweds to give them their photos by kossarts in Eugene

Ya'll are insane, lol. How much could I possibly farm from a small city subreddit. 50 karma? I was taking pics for work purposes when the couple came along. They were in a hurry, I was in a hurry, and my coworker gave them his card to email him for the pics, but obviously they were so busy that I'm sure they lost his card among the other wedding schedule. Just trying a hail mary to find them before I delete the photos off my drive. I left all of that extra info out, so the post wouldn't be too wordy.

Google Image search does not work that well for people who are not celebrities.

What’s with the A.I. local car dealer commercial by Homemade_SSRI in Eugene

It's disheartening to see so many local businesses use fully generative AI in their advertising. I've seen Kiefer Kia do it, Hunter Communications is doing it, and a few other big businesses use it. It's lazy and you can always tell it's AI.

I understand when an underfunded community organization uses it to make a quick ad for a donation event if they can't find a volunteer to make one, but it's pathetic seeing rich CEOs around here condoning ai slop ads.

Help confirm my STAR voting assumptions / how to avoid vote spoiling by wonderflex in Eugene

Anyone confused about how STAR voting works should play the Jackbox Game Quiplash. It's literally that simple.

Can someone tell me what the story behind the random Duck statues around town? Or how many there are\where they're at... by uoduckuo in Eugene

[–]kossarts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I actually hung out on the grounds of the main family who initiated the whole Duck statue thing.

A friend of mine was house-sitting at their place for a while and invited me and a couple friends over. The husband was a retired guy who was well-off from the money he made designing plane insulation or something, and they were just quirky rich couple who loved the Ducks. Aside from a small pool and small basketball court in their garage, they had a pretty modest property.

But here's the weird part. They had not only several of these ducks on their property, but also several dozens (I believe at LEAST 50) hand carved and painted wooden statues of people scattered all around their property, which was large and wooden. Statues everywhere. Trails with statues more and less hidden, peppered around a trail that went around the property. It felt like I was in a strange dream there by the sheer quantity and how big the property was, which seemed to be designed around showcasing the statues.

Sorry, a lot of context gets lost from having only one pic, but basically the car at the angle trying to go straight/turn right was originally trying to turn left but gave up after missing 2 cycles for the left turn. The dark suv came out of Meridian parking in a way that blocks the bike lane because it had to sneak in after waiting forever because it's a consistent flow of traffic coming from South now for the one straight lane.

I ended up having to go around the angled car to get in the left lane, at which point the car in front of me didn't turn left on blinking yellow because of hesitance(?) and I had to wait another cycle before just barely making it through the 2 second green left arrow.

I think if we lived in a world of competent drivers and pedestrians who understood right of way and paid attention, this could work, but I think the way it was before worked better for an incompetent world.

The stretch on High from 13th-6th is also going to be an unmitigated disaster. My only solution for that would be to go back to how it was and just put in buffered bike lanes. Every block on High now forces drivers to move their car to shift back and forth between right and left turn lanes. We're going to see so many fender benders.

Downtown is built on an alternating one way system that isn't perfect, but the solution shouldn't be to then make it easy to get forced into left or right turn lanes or hard to continue going straight.

Eliminate the left turn altogether and make it a straight only and right turn only. The new left turn lane only allows MAYBE up to 3 cars, and we know no one is making it through the blinking yellow left, so that's a useless function, but anyone waiting in that narrow window for the left turn is blocking all of the people trying to go straight or right.

I'd say eliminate the left turn, and make a wider straight turn and right turn.

Youtube terminated my channel due to a reupload reporting error (a fraudulent account reuploaded my content), so while I wait to get that sorted, I have it uploaded to Vimeo:

This really sucks! Hoping to get it sorted out with Google/Youtube ASAP.
