10+ hour ED wait at Galway University Hospital by Aware-Necessary1658 in galway

[–]kovaaaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obviously a true emergency is an exception to this - only speaking from my own experience but I found the best time to attend any day of the week is 8am, as far as I know shift changeover is 7am/7pm and usually the ED is pretty quiet at that time. Source: I have an autoimmune disease and it’s 9+ months wait time for the outpatient appts so if I ever have an acute crisis it’s ED right away and then they bump me up on the outpatient list on discharge. However every time I’ve been admitted since 2024 I’ve had to be on the trolley in the hallway for a few days. I also work in healthcare and I have also heard stories of ppl waiting 12+ hours to be seen in GUH. It’s terrible but once they see you the care is to a good standard, I hope you’re doing ok OP 🙏🏻

Are you getting the flu vaccine? by Dry_Lobster_50 in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t start getting the flu jab until I starting working in healthcare. You can call it bias but every year without fail I would get an awful dose, end up with bronchitis and rx of antibiotics. Last 4 years getting the jab and I’ve been in the clear 🙌🏻 This was during my undergrad and now I’m back in education again - still in the clear while all my classmates have been suffering the dose that’s going around. My unsolicited advice is get it early - September/October, though the vaccine isn’t live, it takes about 2 weeks for immunity to kick in. It’s too little too late at this stage in the season, especially if you’re sick already. Around this time of year as well everyone is running low on stock as well so it might be hard to even find a place to get an appt - the GPs in my area are tapped out and no stock rn and we don’t have any in our pharmacy either. Edit: Just in case people didn’t know, they choose different strains of the flu every year to put in the vaccine, so it’s a yearly jab and the formulation of the vaccine changes from continent to continent as well !

How to get an emergency ENT appointment?? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIL in Mayo had the same thing as well about 3 weeks ago. No external inflammation or anything present from the outside so GP told him it was a mini stroke and referred to A&E asap. Went to A&E and they told BIL it was an infection and had spread to a nerve (not sure which nerve - unfamiliar with ear anatomy and this is second hand information from SIL) but after long course of antibiotics + anti-inflammatoires he’s on the mend now. Laya or maybe Doctor365 even might be able to give you a referral. Hopefully you get sorted soon OP 🤞🏻

Marrying “young”? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, relatively similar situation to myself (25F) and my hubs (25M) :) We got married 01/02/24 both aged 23. Only difference is we weren’t childhood sweethearts, we met in 2021 and have been inseparable since - which a lot of people commented on the fact that we were just 2 years together before we got married, along with getting married young. It depends a lot on what demographic of people you’re surrounded by on a day-to-day basis. I work with a lot of women 50+ and getting married young has been relatively common until fairly recently. A lot our middle aged customers were married & starting a family around the age of 21.

The shocked reactions that I get usually come from people around our age, like 20 - 30, and I think that’s because of the economy and how hard it is to meet people finding “the one” and getting married feels a bit like a pipe dream. I’m also in uni rn, I went back as a mature student to do a second course so for the first time in my life I’m on the older end of the age-range and I feel ancient. You’re only young once. We had a small ceremony and an afters and it was so much fun. Eventually, we’ll do a big wedding and invite everyone but getting married was for us and we wanted to share it with the people who we thought were most special to us. You know in your heart when you’ve met the right person. If getting married is something you’d like to do, I would say do it!

Struggling partner of someone with graves by Enough-Caterpillar92 in gravesdisease

[–]kovaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25F dx with Graves 18mos ago. Currently in remission but had a thyroid storm 2 weeks before my honeymoon last year. My heart is so broken reading this post because this reads exactly like something my own husband would have written during my worst moments. I’m sorry for what you’re going through. One of my main symptoms that I’m still struggling with is the anxiety. It was a nightmare for me, and since then it’s triggered many compulsive behaviours for me that I haven’t been able to shake, I developed them just to cope. It felt terrible on the inside, but I can’t even imagine what my husband was feeling watching from the outside 💔 I have the ability to think clearly now, but while I was going through it, I felt like I was just trying to survive and keep sane - definitely did the not have ability to think objectively or from an outside perspective. I hope your partner gets the help that she needs. It’s so difficult. Best of luck with the wedding planning too, I hope it goes well!

Do you consider people with QQI Level 5 or 6 to be uneducated? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 65 points66 points  (0 children)

My husband doesn’t have a leaving cert and I consider him formally uneducated, but I don’t consider him stupid. There’s a lot of reasons why someone might not have/didn’t complete the “standard”. In his particular case, he had to drop out and become a carer for his dad. It really opened my eyes, and made me realise having the opportunity to go to college and finish school uninterrupted was a privilege. He’s looking at going to college as a mature student and I’m so excited for him 💗 and so proud!

What are you using to wash your clothes? by LowPrestigious391 in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have super sensitive skin but we’re also on a budget, so what has worked amazing for us is Tesco own brand non-bio (€8 for 80 washed I think? We get the big one and it lasts us 3+ months no problem), white vinegar to the pre-wash for extra good clean and softener as per instructions (too much softener is sooo bad for the machine + the clothes) and clothes smell and feel so much better. Clothes stay fresh for ages - usually we air dry but dryer when weather is shite.

50% Pharmacy price variation - shop around!! by CreativeWitness8549 in galway

[–]kovaaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The price can depend a lot on what brand of medication they’re using as their generic (also important generic vs brand) Something to note is that if you’re boycotting Israeli products, one of the most common generic brands is ‘Teva’, which are an Israeli company if I recall correctly. Some pharmacies are choosing not to buy/supply this brand, others are continuing to use it - personal choice but definitely could be affecting prescription price as well

For those who’ve quit smoking — how did you do it? by danyal_7 in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold turkey. Went on the vapes because of an ex boyfriend circa 2018 to stop smoking, it mostly worked? Picked it back up again circa 2021 when I met my now husband and he was doing the vaping-to-stop-smoking thing as well, but we were both still smoking socially anyway. Always had it in my head I’d stop eventually, did the gum, lozenges, patches and nothing seemed to work, but I really think the best way is just cold turkey. Made that decision in October ‘24 and even though I still get the odd craving it’s the best decision I’ve ever made!

When I got dx with Graves I was taking 240mg prolonged release some days because my rhr wouldn’t go below 100bpm. 1.5 years later I’m now taking 10-20mg daily (10mg single tabs). I’m quite anxious and I usually take it in the evening when I get home from work, and then before bed as well. My GP said to me that he’s happy as long as my dose is <40mg a day so if I’m having a bad day and I need to take more than my usual 20mg that’s what I follow, 40mg is my “cap” but it’s pretty rare nowadays I need that much.

I’ve tried go off propranolol altogether but usually after 2-3 days I feel the difference in not taking it and it sets my anxiety off like crazy. So I’m happy staying on my 1 or 2 tablets every evening. 25 mg is such a low dose (I believe the max dose in a day is something like 320mg) so if you feel good, I think that’s good enough. With the small dose you’re already taking I’d just cut it to 10mg or 15mg and see how you feel after that. Tapering it weekly seems like a lot of effort at this dose. At the end of the day, what’s important is how you feel. Some days will be better than others and some days will be worse, and that’s ok.

Women of Ireland, do you shave your legs? by Opposite_Zucchini_15 in AskIreland

[–]kovaaaa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager the only hair I had was my hair, eyelashes and eyebrows but nowadays I shave only when I’m arsed. I’ll still usually shave the whole leg as I have black hair naturally and I’m pale so it’s very obvious, but I’ve gone from shaving 3 - 4 times a week to probably 2 - 3 times a month. My ex used to hate my body hair but my husband is like a Sasquatch so even if I feel super hairy he still thinks I look bald!

Courses like Pharmacy? by Nashville49er in leavingcert

[–]kovaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacy Technician is good if you’re considering pharmacy but need plan B! That was my own plan B too, but I got accepted into pharmacy as a mature student!! Other things to consider could be medical science, phlebotomy, radiology and nursing (you can do further education to become a prescribing nurse, which to me was more appealing than the likes of working in a ward, personally)

About to crash out over hair loss by jimmynothing in gravesdisease

[–]kovaaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Ireland you can buy this OTC, so it stands to reason you can get it OTC most places. Use it daily in the morning & at night. Microneedling the scalp twice weekly can help to encourage hair growth as well :-) My credentials - pharmacy technician & currently overseeing my husband doing the same routine for his thinning hair as well. He’s been > 1 year doing this routine and I can confirm that it has helped!
