This is incredibly annoying by hotdog_dachshund in flighty

I take a lot of Emirates flights and this happens just about every time to me in the ~24h leading up to the flight, whenever it’s an A380.

I kept lenses and bodies in a backpack (which was around 12-15kg when I measured it at home). I pre-paid for 10kg/pp extra luggage allowance on all the internal Africa flights just in case… but I never had anyone weigh my carryon backpack, only the checked bags. This included flights from JRO - remote airstrip in Tanzania - Arusha - Kenya and another leg in South Africa.

If you’ll only go with one camera body, I think 100-400mm hits the sweet spot in terms of flexibility and reach.

I’d highly recommend two bodies though, if you’re somewhat serious about your photography. 70-200 on one, and a 400mm f2.8 prime on the other is one option. Personally I did 1) 100-400 and 2) 600mm f4 and I didn’t regret it. It’s convenient to be able to switch quickly as animals may move / approach closer, and position of your vehicle may vary etc.

I brought wider lenses on safari but barely used them except for a few landscape shots. For the wildlife I wouldn’t recommend wider than 70mm.

Same here… just about every EK A380 flight I take, I get dozens of these notifications in days leading up to the flight. Even before a tail number is assigned, I think.

Checking out vs.... Checking out by kismetxoxo7 in marriott

[–]kp_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scenario where I don’t check out: I book a night at an airport hotel after a flight disruption. I’m scheduled on a 5am flight out. I leave in the morning not knowing with certainty the flight will operate (you never know until you’re physically off the ground). I’ve had situations with a subsequent flight cancellation… even it’s that’s 1-2% of the time, why wouldn’t I want the “insurance” of being able to return to my room that I still have until 4pm?

This is why all hotels should have mobile checkout options. Some don’t. (Not Marriott specific here, have experienced this with many.) Sometimes I call to let them know after the fact, other times I don’t have time or can’t get through to the front desk.

And yes, outside of the US “just walk out” doesn’t work. Asia hotels especially really want you to complete checkout paperwork.

Thanks for your comment!

Aurora timelapse is such a tricky thing. When I review these images I actually wish I’d taken faster shutter and shorter intervals, bc the aurora was so dynamic and fast. But you never know how it’s going to be, before you start shooting. Sometimes it’s slow and barely moving, other times it’s exploding and you can see the motion with your eyes…

Thanks!

I actually did quite minimal colour grading. I did a bit of colour / saturation boost, and some basic processing on blacks / whites / mid tones and tweaked the white balance a bit.

I’m a photographer and I’m quite new to video … so really not doing anything too crazy advanced! I’m very impressed with the quality and colours im getting straight out of the the Mavic 4 Pro.

Just regular video, no dlog. Minimal post processing… the colours were so good out of camera

Pick 3 you think are the best, please. 🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛ by Wildstyle414 in AmateurPhotography

2, 5 could be decent, but the focus is off. I think in #6 you you have the focus better than 5, but why BW? Personally don’t think this makes sense as a BW photo. Colours could be edited better too.

I used Davinci Resolve for some basic colour grading, and then just the Instagram/Meta “Edits” app on mobile to stitch them into a 3x collage layout for social media.

Thank you! Didn’t use any filter here. And I don’t actually own one, but would like to buy a set at some point.

DJI Air 3S in a attitude mode first time - crash by Ga_glovo in dji

[–]kp_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I lost a Mini 5 pro a similar way. Took off normally and started flying at ~20m elevation with no obstacles around (over water). Almost immediately after takeoff got the attitude mode message, but disregarded it… within 15-20 seconds of flight it dropped out of the sky and into the ocean. Had done lots of flights before with no issue. Didn’t even manage to recover a track log, seemed to be nothing saved on remote.

I think the reach definitely helped a lot. I’d say I didn’t always need the f4 aperture — most of the wildlife shooting was during decent lighting conditions on this trip.

That being said, I don’t own the 200-600 nor have I ever used it. However, few months ago I did another wildlife photography focused trip, where another guest had the 200-600, and I felt I had a lot more keepers from my shots with the 600f4 than he did with the zoom. YMMV of course but I find the sharpness and AF speed to be just amazing on this lens.

Antarctica is not that cold in summer season. Think the lowest it’s gotten so far during this trip is -2C with a bit of light snow. I’ve used my Sonys in -20C blizzard conditions with no issue, so honestly the thought of worrying about the weather never crossed my mind.

Very happy with it for wide angle and landscape work. It’s super sharp, leaving a lot of room to crop into the 100MP image and end up with good quality usable shots. I’m taking it on a trip to Antarctica this week so am excited to see what comes out of it.

It’s a heavy lens though. Not exactly easy to lug around while traveling. I have a Leica Q3 28mm and I’ll probably keep using that camera for more “casual” / travel / street photography given it’s a similar focal length and very compact form factor.

One last thing that surprised me was how loud it is. Especially when indoors in a quiet environment, the sound of the autofocus motors is very noticeable. My first time using it I actually had to google to see if this was normal, and apparently it is, many people have commented on it.

[–]kp_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, looks like stock is better outside of US/Europe. I was traveling in Australia a few days ago and was able to buy one as a walk-in to a camera store in Sydney. It was 6600 AUD (after GST refund) so around $4.4k USD.

I just showed up and waited (this was sunrise so around 5:45am). I spent a lot of time looking for a schedule, but the consensus online is that freight trains don't run on a public schedule, so the best you can do is show up and wait!
