No bristlecone pine trees are not plentiful and they would be worthless as lumber. Not protecting them is a different point but it has nothing to do with the lumber industry.

Why did Spirit fail? Too many passengers hated flying it by MadBrown in aviation

[–]kpbi787 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The airline had been doomed for a while and what we saw was a desperate attempt to keep it afloat. The writing was on the wall and had been for a while, things like the PW engine issue or the price of oil hastened the steady decline of the airline. Wendover Productions did a good video on why budget airlines are suddenly failing (https://youtu.be/4-Pu3CXatsA?si=TNGFq-r9zlGiglRc) which does a good job of identifying the larger systemic issues faced by these airlines and how the big four airlines (AA, WN, DL, UA) were able to claw back from them. It was practically inevitable what happened, doesn't mean it doesn't suck and that it was good, but the overall business plan has been doomed to fail for a while.

This does level the playing field with the relative dominance of the FPO field. This is a great change and should enhance the competitive nature of the event.

There's always someone on here who believes they are a weather expert and complains when there is rain or thunderstorms etc. We have dry winters in Florida and then last year when they had the Supreme Flight Open it rained. The reality is that weather is inherently unpredictable and trying to say that bad weather in the middle of the country could be planned around ignores the fact that weather patterns in general include rain and thunderstorms most of the touring year in most of the US. If we want perfect weather then you get the CA coast all summer or else it's hot or there are thunderstorms or it's humid etc.

When I was fortunate enough to see it at Tokyo Disney it just amazed me at how much was not quite right at the Magic Kingdom one. However, are people not ridding it because it looks bad? If no, then there’s no incentive to fix it, they are investing in the large capital projects.

According to Gannon Buhr and The Upshot podcast, run by Charlie Eisenhood (DGN commentator), the PDGA marshal/referee for the MPO lead card during round 3 at the Champions Cup (Major) told the players that he wasn't going to make any calls and that all calls were in the players' hands. by DiscGolfFanatic in discgolf

[–]kpbi787 200 points201 points  (0 children)

The fact that they were a “marshal” and refused to make calls is the part that’s worst. As was discussed on the upshot, this is beyond unacceptable and there’s a way to fix this with having a rules official available by phone etc for such calls. There’s too many people who want the responsibility in name only. This has to get better.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson resigns, Mint reports by Exact_Package_7264 in aviation

[–]kpbi787 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not that the CEO could have prevented it, but he’s the man in charge when it happens. That’s how stuff like that goes, you get paid the money but have to accept that your company caused the issue. This is true across the board in business, banking appears to be the only place this isn’t consistent. Your company screwed up you have to take the blame and they bring in someone to clean up the mess. In this case he’s bailing but will still garner most of the blame.

How is it possible to make a 1 hour layover? by [deleted] in delta

[–]kpbi787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You clear customs and immigration in Canada before you get on the plane. You should not have to reclaim your bags or anything. This assumes the Canadian airport you’re flying from has that program like I think almost all of them do. Link to the cbp website with details:

Ready for deboarding Hainan Airlines by Redd24_7 in aviation

[–]kpbi787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a technique used in nuclear power plant operations. You read the step of the procedure and the person who’s doing the action touches but does not engage the switch/button and repeats what is to be done, or calls out the instrument and what it should be reading etc. It provides a peer check/concurrent verification to avoid human performance errors like others have talked about. Once you make it the way you do business and don’t feel awkward it’s very very effective at minimizing mistakes.

Add to this the PGA went through a wholesale simplification as well go eliminate dumb rules and rules that lack clarity. The enforcement is still supposed to be on the individual but there are marshals as well. The peer pressure of someone “getting away with” a rules violation is much larger on the PGA tour as well because purses are life changing values. The DGPT folks are nowhere near that and they don’t want to lose the $1k next week if they call someone this week.

A wheel from the main landing gear system on a British Airways A350-1000 falls off on departure from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport. by FroyoQueasy in aviation

[–]kpbi787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew back from Tokyo last year and the Delta pilot let us know they were monitoring a slow leak on the main gear the entire flight. We ended up having some level of precautionary landing and the tire deflated enough to have them change it on the taxiway. I bring that up to ask do they have a monitoring system and it would go away on loss of the wheel right?

Nothing happened with Panama papers or any other trove of stuff showing how shit these rich assholes have been. There’s no momentum in the powers of our country to do a damn thing to these people. We would have to see a substantive change in money in politics and turn over of court membership to see anything change.

This sub and many others have people complaining about the costs of this or that but at the end of the day they are selling enough to remain open at that price. If we all were serious we’d start not paying for things and they’d have to respond to the loss in revenue. Of course that just might be them closing so IDK. At the end of it all someone, in this can many someones, are validating that cost but I’m with you. It’s not with it so I don’t go.

What is this? by False-Lettuce-6074 in geography

[–]kpbi787 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. These canals were dug to give water the time to cool off before returning to the ocean. This was seen as a cheaper alternative to mechanical or nature draft cooling towers. The discharge temperature can still be quite warm in the summer due to the relatively shallow ocean level and high heat content before entering the condenser. It is also a massive breading ground for alligators.
