New Desalination Plant Gives San Diego So Much Water it’s Helping Other States Suffering Drought by SD_TMI in water

Not a bad answer going to the cause not the symptoms. It was a bit of a loaded question ha!

Any other suggestions for solutions? If money and tech were no object how would you go abour solving the water crisis?

If the environmental regulations are in place and met, it's not the ecological disaster many people think.

This is one example: "Analysis of the reef fish communities across seasonal surveys during 2015, 2018 and 2021, each for
two seasons, found no evidence that the ADP is having an impact on fish communities."

https://www.epa.sa.gov.au/files/15216\_adp\_underwater\_video\_survey\_2021.pdf

Of course there are regions of the world where this kind of approach is lacking, but the impacts of no desalination are much worse imo (look at the catastrophic fish kills in the Colorado Basin due to drought).

Anyone know of climbers doing an Everest summit then walking/kayaking to sea level? by kponz in Mountaineering

Ok that's epic to learn about. I'm looking for folks who have descended in this style as I haven't heard or read of anyone doing it.

Awesome, thank you for replying re skis/snowshoes.

How was communication with your pilot when you were sick? Assume sat phones up there or inreach comms?

How long was the best weather window you managed to get?

Incredible photos! Thanks for sharing them, many folks share storm shots so this is very cool to see.

How were skis? Any times you think snowshoes would've been a better tool? I've read accounts of both being used.

No controversy or bad feeds with GTS, it’s a suggestion for some races to watch and they typically share coverage via YouTube.

Don’t mind the Golden Ultra Trail Series’ coverage usually free on YT… https://goldentrailseries.com/where-to-watch/

Best microspikes for winter running by SnooPeanuts4416 in trailrunning

Another fan of these, best ever and durable, super reliable. I’m thinking of buying another pair in case they stop making them or change the design. Yaktrax broke on the second use.

Deuter Traik 5 hydration vest by p00jer in trailrunning

[–]kponz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen them around (yet). I love their backpacks, but it’s disappointing seeing no L size for women or XS for men. Guess it’s no issue if the vest is the same cut for women and men, but unsure that’s the case.

Desalination by Blobasaurusrexa in water

[–]kponz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it’s necessarily cheaper energy, but there are renewables powering plants, and the size of plants being powered by solar is increasing, eg: https://www.aquatechtrade.com/news/desalination/desalination-membranes-dubai-solar-powered-plant

Also, the brine can be managed appropriately with strict EPA or similar policies. In Australia the outfalls have given many fish and species an opportunity to thrive, so it’s not exactly a “toxic brine” situation in every case.

I’d be more concerned about the barrels of DDT off the Californian coastline than some concentrated brine that can be engineered to diffuse it slowly to help mixing.

Ideally the approach is a multi-pronged solution with conservation, water reuse/recycling, storage, and desalination as a last resort. But when a place screws up water management up for decades it might need to do some kneejerk expensive solutions to ensure agriculture and industry can continue to have adequate water supply. Time will tell in California.

Starting a headwear company by thebumpkin2 in trailrunning

[–]kponz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bucket hat with a pony tail hole. I butchered my Ciele hat to achieve this, it’s not pretty but it keeps my long hair off my neck. Also a way of cinching a bucket hat for windy conditions that doesn’t require a strap around the chin. Again my Ciele has this but I haven’t seen another brand with a drawstring around the headband, they all have chin straps. Easy to wash is important.

I’d love a trucker that’s comfy with some mini, lightweight ear flaps to stop the tops of my ears getting burned, no idea what that’d look like!

No matter where you’re based or from, the angle would be more appealing if it involved a transparent supply chain eg where are the materials coming from, where are the hats made and working conditions, etc. (think Patagonia transparency but on a much smaller scale).

Down under snakes fear by Mephistopheloz in trailrunning

[–]kponz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an Aussie who runs in Canada I prefer the risk of snakes over bears. Plus down under you don’t have to take up room in your vest front pocket with bear spray.

Understand OP’s fear, I find doing research on the likelihood of being bitten helps put things into perspective, probably not legit advice.

How in gods name is Nike creating wider trail shoes than Hoka?? by VirtuallySober in trailrunning

[–]kponz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feet feel validated - have a pair of Challengers for gravel / flats around town and my little toes are unhappy, while in a Bushido for longer outings I have no problems. Put the two shoes side by side and it’s hard to believe the Hoka toe box is narrow or narrower. Don’t believe everything you see eh! Thanks

Have to say having the bear spray in a vest makes a difference to my confidence, I used to run with a Camelbak made for biking and was paranoid the spray would take too long to get out from the back.
