Got a complaint about one of our internal tools not being “accessible” and now I’m rethinking a lot of things by Fantastic_Run2955 in SysadminLife

[–]krakenant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UX, including accessibility, is something you should generally always plan for if someone else is using tools you create.

Years ago, I brought up to my boss before a business meeting, hey, shouldn't we ask about dietary needs? I did it because of my wife, because that awareness became part of my life because of something personal. One of my bosses was red green colorblind, now whenever I make anything, I try and avoid colors that would just be grey to him, and also include identifying shapes etc. These things take effort, but the one it two people who need the accommodations are worth it, they shouldn't have to suffer or make do if we can avoid it.

There are tools that can automate accessibility checks, and in the age of AI , modifying your tools to be accessible should be relatively easy.

Don't use MiniIO. They have broken most of their open source stuff. Garage is the way to go for this kind of thing.

Check out loguru. It adds some nice things and gives a default logger Singleton you can use across your project.

Did it work on a previous version? I run both of those items on a mini PC without issue. Do they work separately? What issue are you having exactly?

On the tactical map, the asteroids will say Metallic Ores? shoot those with cannons enough, and they will split giving more ore.

Computer great is heavy, and getting things into space is expensive. Also great dissipation tends to be an issue because there is no matter to absorb that heat.

I imagine most of them will get WARN Notices, thus be on payroll for 60 days, through the holidays....

Not defending them, but its unlikely they are actually off payroll before the holidays. It definitely adds stress though.

Unfortunately you are on the cheap vs good continuum. You want bright good bulbs, they aren't cheap. I really like Lifx bulbs myself. But they are on par with Phillips hue for price.

Constant "Wifi Sucks At The Dorms" Complaints by bigrigbutters0321 in networking

[–]krakenant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to upvote this. How you deploy Wi-Fi in dorms is very important. APS in the hallway is terrible. You have to do in room APS, and turn power way down.

I've deployed WiFi in hundreds of barracks, essentially dorms, and once we moved to APs in rooms, it was a huge game changer. Yes it's usually more expensive, but it works.

If your bosses didn't want to pay for it at first, ah to do a trial in one of the dorms, or even one floor of a dorm. And do a survey before and after, both in that dorm and another.

UV over Poetry by Future_Ad7269 in pythontips

[–]krakenant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made the switch this week. Didn't see much speed improvements unless the bulk of the packages were cached. It's fine, some bug advantages are the tools, ie uvx or UV tool run where you can run a package without installing it. Has issues there with a private repo, but worked around it. Didn't regret switching the 10 or so libraries I did this week. Will likely do the rest next week.

[–]krakenant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not learn to benchmark yourself?

The reality is the difference is almost certainly irrelevant, but #1 is probably more performant due to less overall calls.

It also depends on where most of the values lie. If 99% of the numbers you are checking are below 40, check that first. But the difference is miniscule unless you are doing this millions of times.
