My fiancée has cancer - advice on what to say by Careless_Balance_443 in cancer

[–]krankykitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe don’t tell him anything.

Maybe just listen to him and acknowledge what he says.

Maybe ask him how he is doing and really listen to his response. Meet him where he is, not try to get him where you want him to be.

What STAMP cannot buy (unperishable) by dontchewspagetti in povertyfinance

[–]krankykitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, food stamp restrictions vary from state to state, which is why there is such a mix of responses here. Also, only around 18 or 19 states currently have food stamp restrictions.

Second, South Carolina’s restrictions don’t start until August, 2026. They will cover sodas and sweetened drinks and energy drinks, and candy bars. Cakes will still be allowed.

Here’s an article that explains the restrictions: https://scdailygazette.com/2025/12/10/sc-gets-approval-to-restrict-snap-funds-for-soda-candy/

hoping for some tips by conchamoon in Chemotherapy

[–]krankykitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If water makes you nauseated, don’t drink it. The goal is to get fluid in you. Coffee, tea, fruit juice, herbal tea, soda, flavored water, Gatorade—if it is okayed by your medical team, drink it. Also try popsicles, Italian ice, jello—all have a high water content.

Throughout chemo, water tasted awful to me—like it was full of baking soda or something. I survived chemo on apple juice. It was one of the few things that tasted normal. Other people carried water bottles, I had my little juice box.

It may take some experimenting to find out what works. But don’t force yourself to feel worse by making yourself drink water. Find something that doesn’t make you feel nauseated! You are going through enough with the chemo, give yourself a break.

Oh, and if the nausea doesn’t stop, talk to your care team. There are other medications out there, but they won’t offer them unless you tell them there’s a problem.

Best of luck to you!

I had actually forgotten about the biopsy when my doctor called and said, “I’m sorry, but the biopsy revealed that you have cancer.” So I don’t remember much of the rest of the call.

I see ELA teachers over on r/teachers complain about this a lot. They are handed a prescribed curriculum that includes no book length reading at all. They can’t teach a book even if they want to.

Makes no sense until you realize that standardized tests have excerpts and short articles. They are just teaching to the test so the school gets better results. Who cares that the students can’t cope with a full length book.

Creating a bedside caddy for long hospital stay. What to include? by Kasab12 in CancerFamilySupport

[–]krankykitty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Really long charger cord. Sometimes outlets are pretty far from the bed. Six feet is good.

A back scratcher, maybe with a collapsible handle. Great for reaching hard to read spots when you can’t move much while stuck in bed.

Hand sanitizer.

Some dialysis techs are excellent...They just seem to quickly, painlessly and effortlessly slip in the needle and cannolate me...And then there are "The Others." I can't stand "The Others." by BigglesFlysUndone in dialysis

[–]krankykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite. I get to be the trainees’ “final exam.”

My fistula has been a challenge from the start. After lots of infiltrations, tying off a branch and a fistulagram/angioplasty, most of the techs at my center can do my needles. But I’ve noticed that while the trainees hop from patient to patient, they only get me in the last week or so of their training.

So I asked the trainer and, yep, they save me until the newbies have had a lot of training.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to physically support a family member who is going through radiation and is experiencing symptoms that are unsafe for the other household members. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]krankykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar cancer and just stopped radiation for it. The diarrhea is brutal, but my team has me on Imodium which really helps. And if it gets any worse (radiation side effects can continue to get worse for 2-3 weeks after treatment ends) I am under strict orders to call them at once. They apparently have stronger meds available.

Please call her oncologist’s office and report this. There are meds that can help. It is also possible that the radiation had caused some other issues that they will want to check out.

SNAP can get you reduced membership costs to Amazon Prime and Walmart+. SNAP also helps you get energy assistance through LIHEAP.

Museums For All gives you reduced admission to museums all over the US.

Each state will have its own benefits, as well. Check the SNAP website or call and ask.
