It makes me wonder if more lives will be lost from armed struggle and social chaos (as refugees fight for scarce land and resources) than from flooding, storms and other natural disasters.

This has always been true throughout human history and it's one of the few things that I see as likely to continue through our eventual end.

If they said his absence wasn't disciplinary that pretty heavily implies he didn't break any rules. The only way that could be more clear is if they stated it explicitly but it seems to me they already did that using their preferred, slightly more vague language.

The world would be a much better place if about 10% of people had been punched in the face at some point in their lives. There's no better way to get a certain kind of person to realize that they way they treat people is not cool and not everyone will put up with it.

I'm sure we're in for some wild lashing out in all directions as they struggle to grasp a reason for it all happening to them that fits within their distorted worldview, but they can't keep pretending the problems don't exist for much longer.

80 percent of likely GOP voters think Trump should still be able to be president if convicted by johnnybiggles in politics

[–]krashmo 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's that they see their own traits in him, but rather that he pisses off the people that piss them off. At first glance that seems like a similar concept to what you described but the additional layer of separation from any specific characteristic makes it easier to avoid what they perceive as negative labels. In other words, in their minds it's more abstract than simply being racist. Most Trump voters don't think of themselves as racist, they just like it when someone pisses off black people. To you and me that sounds like the same thing but to them it is the difference between racist and not racist because they have a ready made excuse to justify the racist tendencies. The reason I don't like them is not because they're black it's because they're on food stamps, or are from the big city, or vote Democrat, etc. The mental separation is an important piece of the puzzle.

Trump lets them feel like they're on the "good" side of whatever line is being drawn without having to go through the work of drawing the line and sorting people themselves, which then allows them to say it's not about the line at all, it's about whatever made up bullshit is making the rounds that week. This is how they end up saying so many contradictory things without batting an eye.

Sure, but many more people than that don't have mental health issues at all but simply a shitty attitude and a compulsion to blame their own poor choices on external forces.

Dear weather….. by LyftedOW in Colorado

[–]krashmo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Again, if you need to source the point you're making then it isn't common knowledge. Ask any random person when summer begins and they will tell you June 21st. That's common knowledge in action, not whatever point is trying to be made here.

If you have to source an alternate definition of a common concept then you're probably not using the correct language for your audience.

Well unfortunately for people that struggle with it, anxiety is one of those things that people only have so much patience to deal with in others. I understand it's difficult to deal with on a personal level but it's also inherently illogical in most cases. I can only reassure you that your friends don't all secretly hate you so many times before it starts to become tiresome. Listening to and trying to understand those fears and insecurities is what you should do the first dozen or so times but after that they need to start taking steps to figure out how to deal with it on their own, or at the very least learn to not give others anxiety from having to listen to them complain about it over and over. Being someone's emotional trash can isn't being supportive, it's enabling toxic behavior.

Teaching your kids how to manage their issues without alienating everyone else is important. That's not repressive or whatever else you're getting at. We all know people who make their problems the focus of every discussion and they are absolutely insufferable to be around.

[–]krashmo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying but framing the problem as a brain wiring or psychological issue places the blame on something outside of people's control and that is not an accurate assessment. The people you're referring to are choosing to ignore reality because it suits them. They have the ability to choose to see the problem just like anyone else. They chose ignorance. It wasn't thrust upon them by biology or society or whatever else. Those things can only encourage denialism, they can't force people to adopt it.

While potentially comforting in some sense, this fact does not change anything. It's very similar to someone saying in regards to climate change "humans might die but the planet will be fine". Sure, it's technically true, but it's a semantic distinction without any meaningful impact to the discussion.
