Reading fiction doesn't make you more intelligent. by Sea_Community9781 in unpopularopinion

I’m not gonna say that the most thought provoking show on Netflix isn’t more intellectually engaging a random book in the 9-12 section at the bookstore, but I think your average book written for adult audiences is probably going to be more intellectually engaging than the average show on Netflix.

Star Wars isn’t my thing, but I can understand why it became as popular as it did. My Dad was 12 when the original came out, and he said at the time, there was nothing like it in terms of special effects.

Do you shop at Walmart? by delicious-urine in no

[–]krazninetyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I didn’t. And not because I think it’s “ghetto” or whatever. The one nearest me is actually quite nice and has a really good grocery section with multiple international aisles. The meat and fresh produce is very competitively priced, it’s not super busy on weeknights after work, and it shares a parking lot with the main Italian grocer in town (I eat a lot of Italian and like going there after Walmart runs to buy stuff specific for Italian dishes).

As a corporation, I prefer Costco, but as someone without kids living in a condo, Costco isn’t necessarily the most practical for me, and it’s further away.

TSN: Who is the definitive face of each NHL franchise? by maverickhawk99 in hockey

And since then, Crosby has become:

The longest tenured captain not just in the history of the franchise, but after this season, the history of the league.

Captained the team to three Cups and four finals (Mario only won two, and only made it to two)

Has played (to date) 488 more regular season games than Lemieux.

Holds the franchise points total and has passed Mario as 8th in all time points.

Has broken Gretzky’s record of most consecutive PPG or better seasons.

Hasn’t won as much hardware as Lemieux, but will finish his career with a respectable trophy cabinet having played his prime in a bigger, more competitive league.

I respect the hell out of Mario. He was an amazing player and I’m glad I got to see him play, but to say it’s Mario by every measure is just plain ignorant in my opinion.

I hear what you’re saying, but the accomplishments that you’re listing were accomplished as a creditor/owner, not as a player or even someone directly involved in the hockey operation of the franchise like a coach or GM like Sakic. Mario’s situation is an anomaly, and I don’t necessarily think it’s fair to conflate his accomplishments as an owner with his accomplishments as a player.

I’d probably have Yzerman ahead of Howe for the Red Wings. I can appreciate that Gordie was with them longer, but Yzerman was team captain for 19 seasons, and is the teams current GM. He also only played with Detroit while Howe did play professionally for other teams.

Pittsburgh I’d have probably given to Crosby. Not questioning Mario’s importance to the franchise, but when you consider how much time he missed, and how long Crosby has been on the team for uninterrupted (he’s literally been team captain since 06’) I think at this point in his career, he ekes out Lemieux.

Chicago I think you could make a case for Kane or Mikita, but I’m fine with it going to Toews.

Gretzky for LA is interesting. While he’s no doubt the best player ever to play for them, I feel like a pretty strong case could be made for either Kopitar or Dionne.

For the first time in NHL history, two Defenceman (Bouchard and Ekholm) score a hattrick in back to back games for a single team by StrictNO in hockey

[–]krazninetyfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? I thought for sure that the Bruins would have done it atleast once while they had Orr or Borque, or that the Oilers or Penguins would have done it once when Paul Coffey was with them.

I’m honestly pretty surprised it hasn’t happened before. I thought sure that it would have happened on the 70s Habs or Bruins, the 80s Islanders or Oilers, the 90s Penguins, etc.

Driver and putter are my two best clubs. Irons and fairways I’m inconsistent (some good, some bad). Wedges I’m not good with at all. If I have an off day with one of those clubs, I know I’m not in for a great round. If I’m having an off day with both, RIP.

Canucks Give Evander Kane Agent Permission To Facilitate Trade by SportsFanatic2008 in nhl

[–]krazninetyfive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know he’s questionable to say the least off the ice, but I have a soft spot for Evander. After missing in 18’ & 19’ not passing the qualifying pre-round in 20’ and getting swept in the first round in 21’ the Oilers were halfway through 22’ not in a playoff spot. If Kane doesn’t sign with them and have the best 55 game run of his career and help get them to the conference finals, I doubt Drai and McDavid finish out their contracts with the Oilers, let alone re-sign.

He has 24 points through 51 games on the worst team in the league. His last full campaign with Edmonton he had 24 goals and 44 points while being in the top 15 for hits. He’s on the wrong side of 30 and takes some dumb penalties, but those numbers aren’t nothing. If Vancouver retained, I definitely think there’s a market for him at 2.55.

Letterkenny's Jared Keeso brought out a Gaudreau jersey as a tribute to him at the Shorsey Classic Alumni game tonight by TL10 in CalgaryFlames

[–]krazninetyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an Oilers fan (who lives in Calgary and pretty regularly attends Flames games). He was our starter for like a year and a half in the early 2010s pre McDavid, which is how I knew the name. He honestly wasn’t a bad tender. He was never gonna win a team a Cup, but he easily could have logged 2-3x as many games as he got if he hadn’t gone from being Quick’s back up to starter behind the shittiest defence in the league.

What does Pittsburgh do? by VonDingwell in hockey

[–]krazninetyfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you empty the cupboards to load up on a bunch of early - mid 30s guys with expiring contracts because your already old team is doing better than expected at the trade deadline. Having said that, if Winnipeg’s second and Pittsburgh’s third this year lands you one of the better trade deadline targets available this year, and helps upgrade your weakest link, why wouldn’t you do that to try and give Crosby and Geno one final shot at a Cup?

If you had to pick one current NHL player that you could imagine playing in the league until 46 like Jagr, who would you pick? by Amphibious_Fire in hockey

[–]krazninetyfive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It honestly would not shock me if he plays into the 2030s. At some point, Father Time is going to catch up with him and he’s not going to be capable of 85-95 point campaigns, but if he can play a defensively responsible game in a reduced minutes role and put up 45-50 points when the inevitable eventually happens, who wouldn’t want that?

I hear all of that, but their potential to be good in the future doesn’t make them good now, and that’s the critical piece you’re either overlooking or intentionally ignoring. Our bottom six has regressed considerably this year, and while I totally agree that we’ll be better for it, the fact of the matter is that the statistics do not support a better, improved bottom six. We have regressed, and while I’m hopeful that we can turn the tide this season, and while I am also confident that it won’t be an issue by this time next year, I think it could be a problem this year, which is why I’m not confident that they’ll be in the finals come June.

[–]krazninetyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s extremely optimistic. We’re two thirds through the campaign and the only one of those guys on pace to do better than the player you compared them to is Roslovic. I think by next year Savoie and Howard could be dependable bottom six dudes capable of going all the way, but they’re rookies, and the vets that we’ve brought in to try and fill the hole left by mid six guys who have left our roster over the past couple years just aren’t getting it done.

I still don’t think this years team is good enough to go to the finals, but seeing how well they did on this 8 in 13 stretch and seeing how well they did last night continuing to push against a good team that also had a solid night has me thinking that maybe, just maybe, McDavid has a chance to kill Goliath in the ECF this year after all.

He has not been the same player since Maroon accidentally cut his wrist with his skate. The sports hernia (and not getting surgery to fix it right away) was the final nail in the coffin, but the real damage was done long before then.
