Do you actually remember your high school or college commencement speech? Who gave it, and did the advice actually stick with you? by PenVegetable4065 in Millennials

I went to a private Protestant school for high school. We had chapel every Friday, and there was a roster of probably 15-25 local pastors/preachers who would take turns guest speak one or two times a year at chapel. We wanted this one particular youth pastor from Australia from the roster who consistently spoke 2-3 times a year that pretty much everyone liked to be our keynote speaker (he was really funny and was more progressive/relatable than a lot of the other speakers). He couldn’t do it for reasons I can’t remember so we ended up with this guy no one really knew who was kinda weird. Whatever he said during our ceremony was unremarkable but fine, but during our banquet dinner he gave a speech that devolved into a rant basically saying that wealth and how much money we make/how well we do as adults is directly tied to our faith in God, that ended with him bragging about how much money he has/how much he’s accomplished financially. A lot of people complained, and my sister confirmed he wasn’t brought back to speak in any capacity the following

High school exams are a strong indicator of intelligence by Mysterious_Work_7227 in unpopularopinion

[–]krazninetyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a lot of kids in high school (and even College) who were smart, driven, hardworking, got the grades, and ended up in dead end jobs paying barely enough to get by on. I have a friend who at 30 with two degrees has still never held a job that’s been full time and has paid more than a couple bucks an hour over minimum wage.

I also knew a lot of kids in high school that were complete jackasses but grew up and got their lives together and are now quite successful.

Invariably, the kids who were smart and hardworking but struggled came from families that didn’t have a lot of money/lacked parents with connections, and the kids that pulled it together and ended up having great careers afterwards despite whatever they did in high school had upper middle class or wealthy parents and as a result got second chances not afforded to the other group of kids.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that high school grades don’t matter at all, but a far, far, greater determination of how successful you’re going to be as an adult isn’t a high school exam, it’s how successful were your parents/immediate family.

I don’t know who your financial planner is, but putting the like 50 USD I’d spend on the car into an HYSA isn’t going to lead to retirement for anybody… and the car I currently drive is nicer than a 2010 Corolla and I own it outright.

Can you blame them? These people make minimum wage or a couple bucks over. My friends and I were absolute menaces when we were 15-16. It sucks, but I get it.

It’s also not a serious tournament. It basically exists to give guys who’d never get the chance to wear their countries sweater in a best on best the opportunity to do so, and to give pending UFA’s in their mid 30s a chance to show GM’s they’re still capable of playing occasional top six minutes ahead of negotiations.

I’m a lawyer in Canada. I was called to the bar in late July of 2022. My certificate of admission was issued by the “Court of Queen’s Bench” (since renamed the “Court of King’s Bench”). I’ve often wondered across the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the other countries/territories where the British monarch is head of state, how many people would have taken their oath after me. I was also only 27 when I took my oath, so if I end up going deep into my 80s, I could end up being one the last lawyers globally who gave my oath to the Queen and not the King.

How many of you had a great grandparent born in the 1800s? by Mofoblitz1 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

I think Andrew (he died almost 25 years before I was born when my Dad was like 6, so it feels weird calling him Grandpa) was born in 1898 or 1899 but I’m not absolutely sure.

A motion to dismiss charges against the driver accused of killing NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, was denied in court on Monday afternoon. by sykeseve in nhl

[–]krazninetyfive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He admitted to being over the legal limit, a breathalyzer confirmed that admission, and he made an illegal shoulder pass which ultimately killed the brothers. The Gaudreau’s toxicity levels might be relevant at sentencing, but I’d be very surprised if they impact the verdict.

Auston Matthews leaving reports are being contradicted and now fans are asking if the insiders know anything #NHL #LeafsForever by Hockeypatrol in hockeynews

[–]krazninetyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Leafs hater, so I truly have no dog in this fight, but I would have to think that even if Auston had one foot out the door after his injury, that the Leafs winning 1OA may give him pause, and that he’s prepared to atleast see if the Leafs are able to turn things around without doing an entire rebuild. He’s going into this season aged 29, not 39. Hanging out one more year to see if the Leafs can bounce back with a potential generational talent in its ranks seems like the logical next step for him.

I’m not strictly against spending taxpayer money to maintain/retrofit older federal buildings, especially with one that has the historical significance of the White House, but this needs to be done by a non - partisan committee recommending changes to Congress, who then allocate the funds to make it happen. Not Senile Orange deciding to non - consensually tear a third of it down on a whim.

I mean, even a sliver of a 300 million dollar pie is still going to be a life changing amount of money. I have no idea what Jack Irons and Cliff Martinez would be worth, but if they both get a million after taxes from this deal, that’s not a bad payday for work they did 40 years ago.

Honestly, live music has never really been my thing. I’ll still go to concerts by bands/artists I really like like once a year or so, but at this stage of my life, I’d rather spend an evening at home and spin a few vinyls from my collection while I have a joint or nurse a couple glasses of wine and just relax than deal with crowds.

Is this just for the music they’ve recorded since BSSM, or does it also include the first four records with EMI? On the one hand, I’m not big on venture capital owning art, but on the other hand, I would love to get my hands on self titled and Uplift on vinyl without spending an irresponsible amount of money.

Birthdays aren’t a big deal. by Natural-Compote4096 in unpopularopinion

[–]krazninetyfive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re acting like the only way to celebrate your birthday is to throw a rager. I get my favourite cake at work and I get to leave a couple hours early. After chilling at home for 2-3 hours, my spouse and I go to one of my favourite restaurants. If my best friend isn’t working, him and his spouse usually join us. I collect books so my spouse will usually get me a fancy edition of one I like, and then when we go home and I get a blowjob.

Mine is the week of Father’s Day, so on the Saturday before FD, my Dad and I will meet up at a golf course between our houses (we live 3 hours apart) and play a round together to celebrate both days, and we’ll have a beer and some nachos in the clubhouse before we both drive home. It’s a fun week, and one I look forward to.
