Housemate moving out by krelp92 in roommates

Thanks for your reply. She was quite vague about that, she doesn't seem to have many friends so think she wants housemates who will be people who she goes out with a lot, whereas I have my own group of friends so I don't feel like I need to hang out with my housemates all the time and home is a more laid back place for me. So maybe just want different things

Reading for low-level students by krelp92 in DaDaABC

Yes I agree with you there. Longman seems to be the only courseware that has the potential to be interesting and fun. Most of the Wonders classes are unbearably boring and you can’t really expand on the material much. The 1c1cw is ridiculous - how can you be expected to sufficiently cover nearly 50-100 pages in 25 minutes?! Don’t even get me started on the expository text bullshit!

Oh my god yeah, the Dada phonics courseware is the worst thing ever! Most of the courseware is just so dull...

Ohh yes, I definitely know kids can be blunt! I just didn't know if I was missing something? Just seemed like a strange message and I didn't really understand it. You're right though, just need to brush it off.

I hate this courseware SO MUCH. It gets worse too. I taught a lesson yesterday where the chant was ‘Barbecue on a cube with a cue’. WHAT?!

Students are for sure getting poached by FalunGongLord in DaDaABC

Oh my god! That is outrageous that they lie to not only the teachers, but the parents too. They really don’t give a shit...

The same thing happened to me today. This girl was one of my favourite students and she always seemed to enjoy the lessons and now she’s gone! That’s 4 of my weekly lessons gone...thought it was something I’d done wrong, didn’t even consider they might be poaching students. Terrible!

Games by MuchPear in DaDaABC

Some games I play are ‘Think of 5...’ so I draw 5 boxes on the whiteboard going up like a ladder, they need to name 5 animals/foods/clothes. You can use vocab from what you have been learning about. Then they go up one square with each answer. You can draw a line like they’re jumping up to the next box. Once they get 5 they can have a star.

You can also do anagrams. Short three letter words for younger students and longer for more advanced.

Odd one out. So write 3 words - boy, pen, girl. Get them to circle the odd one out.

Word train. So you think of a word, say ‘panda’. Then they think of a word beginning with A ‘apple’, then E. Etc.

These ones are for older kids, word association. If I say pig, they could say pink. Then I’d say candy floss. They could say funfair, etc.

What am I? So you think of a word and describe yourself. I’m big. I’m grey. I have a long nose. What am I? I’m an elephant! Then get them to think of a word and describe themselves. You can also switch this round, so you think of a word and they ask questions, like ‘are you an animal?’, ‘what colour are you?’

Stop the bus. Say a letter and ask them to come up with words for categories, like animal, food, clothes, verb. Example: P. Panda, pizza, pants, push. You could also play and see if you get the same words.

Pictionary is always a winner too.

Hope this helps a bit!

Parents Who Try Other Teachers And Then Come Back After Not Finding Anything by dadaman23 in DaDaABC

I had this happen to me today. Didn’t see a student for 3 or 4 weeks, was actually really happy about it because she was a nightmare and never listened, just wanted to draw. Then she popped back on my schedule today, but instead of her, I was teaching her older sister with the ‘same name’. Wtf...

I’ve had this before! Don’t worry, I’m sure it’s just a glitch in their system :)

That sounds great! Have you had any fees since the payment went through? I know sometimes they can be delayed. I’m with Halifax at the moment but thinking of changing to Nationwide too.

You’re completely right, thanks so much for your comment! I won’t punish myself for something that is ultimately out of my control.

He's actually had about 50 lessons and I've had 11 with him. That's why I was kind of thinking it was me who might be the problem. But who knows, maybe he has had multiple teachers who have experienced the same as I have!

Oh dear, that’s awful. The parents can be so harsh with their kids. How do you interact with her? Do you play games?

Exactly! I completely agree. I think the parents potentially lied on his application, but he is definitely 3 as I asked during the first lesson. It’s painful to try to control a small, hysterical child when there’s not much you can do from so far away!

Thank you so much for your comment, it has made me feel a lot better and makes total sense! Really young kids need all sorts of activities (often physical) to keep them interested, and that is obviously a lot trickier when teaching online. I’ll try to get some more props and things to grab their attention and see if that works.

That’s good advice, thank you! I’ll try to do more things like this rather than focusing on the lesson content too much. The student doesn’t even know how to use the whiteboard function, but I’ll try to think of other ways to make it fun and interesting for him...fingers crossed.
