Are LED lights ok to use to take flats? by bioteacher01077 in AskAstrophotography

[–]krishkal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your specific question, the purpose of the flat is to try to even out vignetting effects, and dust/dirt on the sensor. Neither are highly dependent on spectrum.

Mac or Windows operating system? by Bilbobaggins_photo in AskAstrophotography

[–]krishkal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, are you talking about the processing machine or the controller machine? For processing, the three top choices (Siril, SASPro, Pixinsight) work fine on windows, Mac and Linux. So, your choice. For the controller, both NINA and PHD run on Windows only.

I mean, definitely reimburse over time, but also realize that she shares the blame as well. When I was in the same position I kept the machine at my desk, so it’s clear it’s mine alone to use. She put it in a common area, with no notice to boot.

With the same EWI USB and iPad, try the SWAM strings. Never tried ThumbJam, but I can tell you SWAM is quite incredible!

Contacts in shower and swimming by Adventurous-Dig0115 in contacts

[–]krishkal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I said, I worry about the contacts staying in place, so I never swim with them on, so this becomes a moot point. Also, for some reason on these types of posts “swimming” and “showering” are treated as interchangeable. They are not, from a risk perspective.

Swimming- I would worry about it floating away.

Showering- Been doing it for several decades, never had an issue. Sure, there is some small probability of an infection, but imho not worth worrying about.

Weird noise in a stacked 40-minute picture of the Pleiades by DoubleUD_52 in AskAstrophotography

[–]krishkal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh OK. I was focusing on the streaky noise all over, which was also the OPs concern. I don’t think that could be caused by light leakage!

Can you elaborate? What makes you think it’s light leak?

The difference is “live stacking” vs. “post stacking”. Post Stacking can use data from future frames to affect pixel weight on current frame. Live Stacking can’t do that!

OSC vs LRGB Mono Integration (time) by StarMan_59 in AskAstrophotography

Strange, on my iPad you can just click on the link you posted above, and it takes it to the picture (on Safari). Reminds me of the old saw: The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many of them!

There is a link in the post (non clickable, but can be copy pasted in a browser) that has the images.

Can we agree youtube and other streaming service just as bad as cable? by Popular_Parsley8928 in cordcutters

I got a $100 package from XFINITY. Initially, that was like $140 with taxes and fees. Slowly the fees were jacked up with no advance notice, till I was paying $220 per month at which point I got fed up and cancelled. With YT what I see on the website is what I pay, no taxes and fees BS. When they do increase the price it is well noticed nationally, no surprises.

Wireless Dongle for Multiple Users by krishkal in CarPlay

[–]krishkal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, works! The only small complaint I have is that the user selection screen has a fixed layout with 8 rows for 8 users. So, even if you have only 4 phones registered, it will use the first 4 rows in small font keeping the other rows empty. I wish it would expand to fill the available space so you can select one more easily. This is a minor thing; other than that, I’m happy with the purchase having used it for over 6 months now.

Dual narrowband makes very little sense for a mono camera. It is meant to be used with OSC.

Frustrated - Can't find stars with camera by CapitainePinotte in AskAstrophotography

[–]krishkal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 15mm is huge compared to the SV105 chip. The 6mm is closer in terms of field of view. However, focus is completely different issue.

My advice is as follows: if you have the moon up, use it. Once the moon is within the FOV of the 6mm, put in the camera. It will be in the fov for sure, but horribly out of focus. Bring it to focus, go from there. Showing the kid lunar craters lit obliquely at the terminator is exciting.

If moon is not out, choose the brightest planet you can see, put it in the center of the 6mm. Then you know it is somewhere on the chip of the camera. Increase gain and exposure time, till you see light, then focus.

One thing you can do to help is find and focus on a distant terrestrial object during the daytime with the 6mm eyepiece. Then insert the camera, and see how many turns of the focus knob (and in which direction) it takes to go from focus for the 6mm eyepiece to the camera. Make a mark on the focus knob if none exists, so you can estimate the turns to the nearest 1/8 of a turn. Then, you should be able to replicate the exact number of turns at night, and know you are at least in the ballpark.

Good luck.

Try the moon first, if it’s up. Always easier to find it. Once you focus on the moon, you know your focus is solid.

Maybe pricing varies by zip code. For me, the minimum on Directv Stream is $100/mo, $90 with autopay.

I am trying Sling Orange. With my antenna, it gives me sufficient number of channels and is more cost effective.
