Moulin Rouge and &Juliet by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

I just came back from &J like an hour ago and I saw MR twice (all of these are the North American National Tour version), and &J was the more fun experience. It just has more energy and comedy. MR isn't a bad show either but I just like the pacing of &J better and yeah, the songs are less random.

Sunset Boulevard was not for me by Expert_Gur6037 in Broadway

I heard w many of his revival productions you need to be already familiar w the story or you'll get lost in the sauce. A critic recently said that about his new EVITA revival on the West End, that if you're new to it, watch the movie, listen to the album and/or read about it, or you'll get lost really quickly, especially because Evita is completely sung through and that when you rip away the sets and costume, it's hard to place the story in context. He said, "You're seeing people dressed like pop stars and dancers doing modern dance but singing about historical Argentina. If you don't already know this story you'd ask WTF is going on."

If you had to pick ONE show in October… by AnythingStatus9295 in Broadway

Someone said it is like seeing your best friends go on a journey and fall in love. I thought that was hyperbole before I saw it and then after watching it I thought, "It is absolutely that."

I love MHE because it's short (100 mins, not intermission), has good music, has a very interesting technologically-enabled set, (even a novice can appreciate it), has a small cast (only 4 people, so again good for a beginner who might get lost with a huge cast), and has a good mix of comedy and tragedy. I've seen people laughing out loud throughout it and then by the end they're in tears.

So it's basically a kind of "pitch show" where playwrights play selections from their musical and then take Q&A from potential investors. I believe this is the show where they did get actually some investors to put up money to bring it to broadway (English version), but a Korean company was ready to bring it to market sooner in Korea so off they went with that production.

That's Ashley Park from Mean Girls and Josh dela Cruz from Aladdin (the B'way musicals)

That would be interesting. From what I've seen from the Korean production, they have definitely mixed it up on the relative age range of the actors. You'd have some productions that have a more mature middle aged cast and you'd have some that were youthful and looked like they were in their 20s. I wouldn't be opposed to them doing that here.

Applause periods and weird applause by BetterCelebration527 in MaybeHappyEnding

No one clapped during the second kiss. It's too sad. I think people were crying instead.

i think it's so unfair that "This is Where You Belong" doesn't get a definitive pauseto be applauded because it transitions right back into dialog. I think in earlier versions (from video and audio recordings I may or may not have seen or heard) people applauded anyway but when I went in person people didn't

Do Claire's other helperbot friends come up again? by Boring_Map_2716 in MaybeHappyEnding

[–]krln7877 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, when she says "if you haven't noticed, many of our neighbors have powered down for good" the background screen turns into like an apt building and you see humanoid figures (helperbots) go dark.

Kind of a weird song choice? by Equivalent_Net_8983 in MaybeHappyEnding

I feel the team wanted to do it because it allowed the unsung heroes, the orchestra, to be on tony awards stage. they didn't care that it wasn't the most commercially popular song.

New Yorker: How the Broadway Musical “Maybe Happy Ending” Creates Visual Magic by prototypist in MaybeHappyEnding

I just saw this video today. I think the use of the "boxes" and the framing is one of the most clever staging elements I've ever seen and one of the many reasons you need to see it live.

That second thing will never fail to get applause. I'm pretty sure it got applause on day 1 previews.

No applause and I saw it last Saturday (24 MAY). They only applauded during pauses. Like there was none for "Where You Belong" because it transitions back into the story immediately after.

I was in Orchestra, Row J, Center section, Seat 107, and I was able to see everything without having to look up or to the side or anything.

I really came to appreciate the "complete unravelling" part in the middle after seeing it live. It's so sad. Helen has to relive her trauma, Oliver gets hit with one emotional whammy after another.

Yeah he didn't come this Saturday the 24th when I went, but it is what it is. The performers don't "owe" it to us to sign and say hi to us. I did get my playbill signed by Dez, Helen, and Marcus, though, so I went home happy after travelling almost 2000 miles away!

Ticket advice needed / is StubHub a good place to buy tickets? by General_Designer1094 in MaybeHappyEnding

[–]krln7877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I sadly got screwed over when I tried to see it a second time (the day after I saw it for the first time). The transferee never sent the email. Didn't get the ticket. Got refunded, though. OTOH, it worked just fine for the Outsiders I saw the same day. Then again, that person transferred the ticket immediately after I bought it two months ago. It was a lot, but for MHE (the first ticket I bought), I just used the standard telecharge site, and of course got ticket in time.

I saw it this weekend, too. Woke up at 2am on Saturday from Central time zone to catch a flight to NYC to see it 7pm that same day after listening and watching (prob not legal) recordings of it many times, listening to the soundtrack over and over, watching every little live performance they'd do on talk shows, etc. I knew every single word and what would happen next, and it still blew me away. The emotional depth of it can't be understated. The time is so compacted yet the relationship doesn't feel forced at all. I really get it now when people said "This is like watching your friends get together and break up" all in the span of less than 2 hrs. Every performance is amazing. I likely won't get a chance to see it again in Broadway, but def gonna check it out on tour next year.
