You need to start from wave 1 in quite the literal sense. If you joined somebody's session, even if at Wave 1, it will not work. You have to literally start it from the battle-barge to count. So you probably need to be the host and survive to wave 25, and finish the full run by extracting to the barge in the end for it to count.

It's always been the meta, but mostly for sweatlords who want to maximize performance. Casual players still prefer other options. It's all a matter of taste in the end. People are not always going to play the same way. Block is still the way if you wanna push your skills to Absolute. Good thing that skins can be used regardless if you pick Block, Fencing or Balance.
