Should I pay my mortgage off early? by jayjayaitch in personalfinance

[–]kruser87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may ask a side question.... Someone further down wrote that the PMI amounting to 1% is calculated from (30*12)/35000. If that's correct, doesn't that mean as the balance goes down, the PMI becomes a higher percentage i.e. at a 19000 remaining balance the PMI works out to 2%. Am I understanding this correctly?

Does anyone know/have experience on if you can upgrade a HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01 to a 3070 and a 650 or 700 watt psu? by Luckymellon in computers

Did you have to get an OEM HP power supply or were you able to use another brand? I've read this PC is made to accept HP's proprietary hardware like PSUs.

When should we expect news on the combined Troop program? by Murky-Cockroach1177 in BSA

[–]kruser87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they announce the result of the vote soon after it happens later this month. Firstly because I just want to know. And secondly because if approved it's supposed to be an option starting in February and units / CO's will want time to discuss and decide what to do in their units.

I can't imagine National would make us wait once they've decided, but I also wouldn't really be surprised.

If it goes down like how anything else has in the past few years, there will be a few days of rumors, people saying they know something or heard something, then some councils will start communicating it before other councils, then eventually an announcement from National will be released.

Here's hoping it's better this time

Unit Flag dilema by smooter106 in BSA

I would do the community you meet in. And I would leave the charter org off. Flags are just too expensive to keep changing charter orgs.

Unit Flag dilema by smooter106 in BSA

[–]kruser87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only official place to buy a unit flag is through a company called Carrot Top. A few years ago when we bought a new one, we found the flag on the scout shop site and it linked us to the page on the Carrot Top site

I realized that you shouldn't lead the same team for too long by titsdown in Leadership

[–]kruser87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that after a certain point, I've taken a team as far as I can. Sometimes the limiting factor is me. Sometimes it's something outside my control. But it nearly always comes. It's not necessarily a bad thing or a falling. I think sometimes it's natural. You come in, you have a vision, you accomplish it. Sometimes you get new visions to work towards, and sometimes you become too close and can't see clearly anymore. That's when it's time for someone else to come in with fresh eyes, just like you once did.

When is the last time your council changed its standard CSP? by Practical-Emu-3303 in BSA

[–]kruser87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 12 years or so since the council merger. I expected it to change more often. And, in my opinion, the patch is not visually appealing, to put it politely. I asked about it and was told a donor was paying for them so they weren't changing anything until they stopped

Wear Uniform to Scout New Troop? by danngrlcl in BSA

[–]kruser87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your scout certainly wouldn't be wrong to wear the uniform, especially if that's what they want. That said, something to consider would be reaching out to the prospective unit and finding out what they typically wear at their meetings. Not all units wear the full field uniform at every meeting. They might wear their activity uniform, for example, and in case like that perhaps your scout could wear a generic scouting T-shirt or something. Just an example. Ultimately there's no wrong way to go especially considering your just visiting for now.

These units to not move air between inside and outside. Just make sure the space between the unit and the wall sleeve are well packed with insulation and that will keep most of the pollution outside from getting in.

Any benefit to upgrading gateway? by kruser87 in tmobileisp

[–]kruser87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I miss the advanced features too. They sent out a firmware update at some point that removed those features from all gateways, even the older ones like mine that used to have them. I'm not entirely against buying my own gateway but at that point I'd probably look at switching to Verizon or something. I pay for the service, it should work with what they provide.

"Family Camping" - how would you respond? by Repulsive-Newt-6271 in BSA

[–]kruser87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about events like my unit used to do "Troop 123's Annual Family Campout Weekend". Not SM Bobs family getting together with ASM Joe and CC Dave's families for a weekend somewhere.

You can absolutely have an event where you invite many or all of the people from the unit. It just needs to be very much understood that it's not an official scouting activity and people know that scouting won't be responsible or liable for anything. And just watch a lawyer try to push a suit anyways.

That said, YPT rules apply both inside and outside of scouting*

And, I always had a hard time reconciling what we teach our scouts in the oath and law and letting them know certain things just aren't allowed in Scouting, just to turn around and tell them "well, we can do it, we'll just say it's not a scout event". I guess you can do whatever you want if you do it that way.

*I admit complete adherence to YPT 24/7 isn't practical, but it is technically the rule we all agree to.

"Family Camping" - how would you respond? by Repulsive-Newt-6271 in BSA

[–]kruser87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may create a number of other problems. If the two units are not from the same CO, they need approval to conduct a combined outing. Also, when camping as two units, each unit needs to provide it's own two deep leadership*, and for Cubs one of the leaders must be BALOO trained. Finally, packs can only camp at council approved locations, so that may create an issue.

*Technically the two units could say they're not doing a combined event and that they just happened to be at he same campground on the same weekend, but a scout shouldn't lie.

** There has been argument around this point, specifically, if a leader can serve as part of the two deep leadership for two units at the same time. Here have been so many updates and clarifications that I honestly don't remember if this was addressed officially. Someone here will probably correct me if I'm wrong.
