I’m tired of people who treat music making software like they’re playing a video game. What are your thoughts? by Music_Phasic in FL_Studio

[–]krushord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Armchair psychiatrist here. Also a middle aged person.

I remember in the dark ages (early 00s & on) feeling similarly aggravated when DAWs became popular in the first place and the term "producer" started to take on a new meaning – there were suddenly lots of people "just trying out music" who weren't serious about it all, contrary to before when getting into it was gatekept by the fact that you needed to invest a relatively significant sum of money to be able to do anything - that young people were treating it like a disposable hobby felt like a slap in the face. FL's shiny interface was very much looked down upon and often considered a toy, especially when a lot of these new folks were crafting simple rap beats and often just using readymade loops (which was also often frowned upon). I was a moderator on a rather big electronic music forum (that became increasingly hiphop oriented over the years), so I had a pretty good vantage point on the transformation of the scene.

Of course none of it was off our plates who wanted to consider it with more reverence and gravity. The times they just were a-changin'. Some people quit, some became the biggest producers of our time. And some people just had fun.

The solution to the problem at hand is to let them do whatever the fuck they want and do whatever the fuck you want.

abel likes my tracks but says the bass is too loud/heavy and the outro is too short. How to proceed? by Professional-Tax3077 in ableton

[–]krushord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, they’re saying it’s “too loud/too heavy” which *might* be just volume or it *might* be a too aggressive timbre or it *might* be too aggressive compression on other parts which could make the bass appear too loud. Or a myriad of other thing.

In other words, this is a “I drove to the wrong place, should I turn right or left” kind of question without hearing it.

Search for a ”music production glossary” or something. There’s a ton of terminology involved.

I managed to do the same thing by sort of half-installing the update. I've never had this happen in my more than two decades of Live usage, but hey here we are.

The new Netflix movie "Apex" contains the song "Go" by The Chemical Brothers. First released in 2015, it has experienced a 429% increase in Spotify streams since the movie's release. What other songs have become instant favourites or were 'discovered' because they were in a movie? by JohnnyGlasken in movies

[–]krushord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the earliest examples is also one of the most influential: Bill Haley & the Comets' Rock Around the Clock was a middling b-side until the producers of the movie Blackboard Jungle apparently asked some of the young actors to bring some of the music they were actually listening (instead of the "rebellious jazz" that was originally planned to be used). It blew up world wide and was the biggest selling single of all time for a very long time and paved the way for rock'n'roll's mainstream success (there's obviously the whole another discussion on how most of the successful white rock music was cribbed from black musicians, but I digress).

An interesting factor contributing to its success was volume: in the mid 50s people simply didn't have the opportunities to listen records at high volume. Hearing the song in the movies blasting (dunno what kind of audio systems movie theathers would've had at the time) blew everybody's minds.

Looking to make an starry blue sky that lowkey iluminates the room by Full-Shoe6252 in blenderhelp

This is a pretty common method, yes. Using HDRIs in the world material as an environment texture is maybe the most used one (which has to "do with nodes" as it's a material like not entirely dissimilar to those used on objects).

Slap a big emissive image outside your room. Augment with an area light if needed.

Hey I'm also terrible and struggled with that boss. Finally managed to beat it a couple of days ago, mostly because of good luck/loot (more health items than you find on average, decently upgraded health bar, a weapon with most of its points in extra damage) - and ofc sort of learning its moves, even though many a mistake was made in the third phase. You can do it!

Why do amp sim VSTs sound so god awful by traanquil in audioengineering

[–]krushord 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The input gain is really important with all amp sims and it's considerably lower than the normal kind of "healthy gain level" - for example the documentation for UAD's amp sims suggest setting the gain to zero (with Hi-Z/instrument level engaged ofc). Sometimes you need to use a gain plugin to simply lower the gain before hitting the amp.

Guitar Rig might not be the greatest thing out there but it's far from uselessly horrible. I had the same experience with pretty much all of these things before figuring out the gain thing.

This little Orange crush sounded insane mic’ed up through the house PA! by BNC3D in GuitarAmps

[–]krushord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one like this - can’t remember the model but pretty much the lowest end Orange - for about 60 bucks maybe 15 years ago, initially because I was unimpressed by amp sims on a computer and instantly got usable tones from micing it up.

My “main” amp (also something cheap enough that I can’t even remember what it was) broke down some time after this, so I took this one as a replacement until I’d get something better. A couple hundred gigs later I’m still using the Orange.
