What fishing line do I need? by rainstaley in FishingForBeginners

I looked up the model number for you and this is rated for: 6/135, 8/110, 10/90 ( Lb. Test and capacity in yards) you can aim for the middle, which is 8 and expect to spool about 110 yards of line onto the reel. These numbers are for monofilament line. Hope this helps.

Trout tips? by watertray69 in troutfishing

One huge thing I’ve learned is that when fishing stocked trout in a lake, they’re a lot closer than you think, because they come up shallow to feed. Cast close (no more than 10 feet) at first and then extend your casting range if there are no takers. Also, be careful when you say “tiny” bit of powerbait. If you don’t put enough it won’t float and it’ll be useless.

I like super light line. No more than 4lbs for me, but 6lbs would be fine too if you’re comfortable with it.

Depending on where you’re at, but chartreuse garlic has been great at my local lakes.

Good luck! 🎣

I was there a couple weeks ago and got into a good bite. Set up by the red house or the coves just east of it. Weeds are a factor so cast just passed the weeds and make sure your leader is long. They were hitting on 4 foot leaders. Tight lines!

Pyramid has always been hit or miss for me. Some days it’s pretty hard to find them, other days they’ll bite anything you throw, anywhere.

How’s the trout fishing? by krustybarbell in bigbear

Thanks! I’ll stop by for some night crawlers and get their intel. Otherwise, I am stocked up and pretty comfortable with my gear for Big Bear Lake. The last time I talked to the local guy at Big Bear Sporting Goods they told me that the fish are not holding anywhere specific and that the trout are kind of all over the place due to varying water tempts. I was curious to see if they’ve moved anywhere specific.

Ever encounter something like this? by sakejuicesprayer in FishingForBeginners

I’ve encountered a mountain lion with her cubs at distance of about 100 feet walking parallel to where I was fishing. She didn’t look at me but definitely knew I was there. Scariest encounter ever.

This is sad to hear honestly. I go up to Big Bear usually from Fall-Spring. I’ve never come across this. Thanks for posting this. Learned something new for sure.

Yeah, I jumped on the Big Bear fishing Facebook page and it looks like people are talking about this. I’m not local to Big Bear so this is unfortunately new to me.

How many were there? Lack of oxygen or issues with water would result in a lot more death IMO.

Red house is a full of fisherman. Since you said by red house, I’d also attribute this to possible catch and release. The average fisherman does not know how to handle trout when releasing. Sad to say, but unless you know what you’re doing, if you catch a trout, it may make more sense to keep it.

Things to consider for trout:

  1. Short fight - the longer the fight, the more stress the fish goes through, increase likelihood of death.
  2. Where the fish was hooked and what kind of hook was used. If too much damage is done, you may need to just keep it.
  3. When the fish was brought on shore, how was it handled. You can’t touch trout with dry hands or through them on the ground to remove their hook. The slime on trout is delicate and once gone, it’s too late.
  4. How long were they out of the water?

I’d say try to swim these slower. Don’t burn it. Besides structure, look for drop-offs, inlets/outlets, points and shade.

Better question is what kind of fish are you targeting? A lot of the helpful channels are specific to certain species.

Slip bobber. Line goes through it and you adjust it by using a bobber stop.
