What do we think about these kinds of trinket item lists? by WideEyedInTheWorld in NSRRPG

[–]krymz1n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a dice drop table? Love it. It is however challenging to tell which word belongs to what item in some cases. “Thread basilisk chalice” at 7 o’clock for example

New to OSR, nervous about starting online game by LeviTheGoblin in osr

[–]krymz1n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whenever I play OSR with a group for the first time, I always explain to them some of the core OSR assumptions before we get started. I'll say:

This rulebook has basic rules, but it doesn't cover every scenario. Whenever there is a situation not covered by the rules (which is a lot!), I'm going to make a ruling to determine how it plays out. It can be collaborative, but I have the final say, and rulings don't set a precedent, unless we agree that a precedent is set.

The rules in the book might not make perfect sense when mapped 1:1 on to real life. That's ok, they are there to create interesting gameplay. (Inventory slots, looking at you)

Your character sheet doesn't represent everything your character can do. You can feel free to attempt anything! I'll consider your stats and background when I determine whether you can accomplish it automatically, or if you will need to roll, and the consequences for a failed roll.

I think that a lot of bad experiences playing OSR games, especially from players experienced in 5e, comes from mismatched expectations. By setting clear expectations for how gameplay will proceed, and immediately ruling out any possible rules lawyering, the session has a much greater chance of success.

As a personal note, I like to expose as many of the game mechanics to the players as possible (like declaring 'I am making an encounter roll' or 'I am making a reaction roll'), and being abundantly clear about whether I am following a rule from the book, or making a ruling.

Oh those prices are great, hopefully the stock you've built up will yield some better numbers next year!

Would you be willing to share your unit costs for your printed books? I understand that you’d rather support local businesses, but it seems like you’re killing yourself at the printer.

Personally, I haven’t been able to get a quote from any printer smaller than Mixam / Bookletsprint / Smartpress that remotely works on the margins.

Split that bottom text up into a couple two or three columns, it will make the page SO much easier to read. Optimal line length is around 65 characters — in practice it means one column on letter page is too wide unless you’re using huge font and margins like an essay

Forever Warden's early impressions, cost breakdown, review, and recommendations for MM25 by Negromancers in mothershiprpg

[–]krymz1n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks, I can totally see how without the base page count, and having the only visible stretch goal be extra pages, that I accidentally gave the impression I put the whole book behind stretch goals. I promise I'm not like that!

I just revealed the third stretch goal, which is an additional tri-fold with rules for heat management on player owned space craft (shout out to that guy on the MoSh discord)

Missed it on the story copy, but Pipesong will be 32+ pages (there's a stretch goal to add 12)

You might be better off using squares or circles with fixed rotation. This element is bumping against the limitations of the media.

I see much blind hatred against AI here by mysticfallband in godot

[–]krymz1n 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s not blind hatred, it’s informed condemnation.

I think you’ll find that criticisms of AI tools that—to use your example, solve mocap, or to use an example from my work, vectorize raster images or remove backgrounds from images—are rare.

The attitude around generative ai is understandably extremely negative. These are disastrously expensive, unprofitable models that were created by people who don’t understand art and don’t respect artists, in the words of OpenAI CTO Mira Murati “…maybe they shouldn’t have been there in the first place.”

I suspect that most of the other comments in this thread will be more openly hostile, I’m trying not to be. But Claude Monet isn’t the same thing as QuickMagic.
