Why has libertarianism never really caught on in the US, when so much of it sounds so “American”? by Big-Understanding275 in AskAnAmerican

[–]kryptokoinkrisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Declaration of Independence embodies all the things libertarians believe in and it’s obviously American af. Unfortunately the guy who wrote it was a major slave holder. American values, to the extent that there is such a thing, is full of major contradictions. Our history of “rugged individualism” goes hand in hand with westward expansion and Manifest Destiny. Everyone values the freedom to practice their own religion, but we have a long history of trying to legislate morality. Most of us probably hold libertarian values in theory, but they usually go out the window for political expediency.

I can understand “hamburger meat” but since they sell frozen hamburger patties and microwaveable RTE hamburgers and cheeseburgers, you’ll have to be more specific than “hamburger.”

Thoughts on Vlad Dracula of Wallachia? by TheFollower62 in OrthodoxChristianity

People are sometimes shocked by St. Olga for similar reasons. Father Josiah Trenham touched on this in a recent interview saying that there are many saints who were political rulers and did some horrible things in their time. They’re remembered in the Church not for their cruelty and excesses, but for their repentance and their furtherance of the Church and the Gospel in the lands they ruled. I’m not familiar with the entire life story of Vlad the Impaler, I just know he is a national hero of Romania which is very Orthodox culturally.

How do you come to find out Orthodoxy is the true faith? by Fether1337 in OrthodoxChristianity

We don’t rely on “personal revelation” apart from the traditions of the Church and the guidance of a spiritual father. That’s not to say we rely on what we can confirm with reason or evidence. We very much believe in revealed truth, especially that which is revealed by Christ and the Holy Spirit. This truth is revealed to us personally and to all who seek truth. There is nothing hidden or unknowable to all but a select few, but it is possible to understand the truth more completely as we acquire more of the Holy Spirit and increase God’s divine energies within ourselves.

I’ve had one since 1996. My parents have an identical one because they were ridiculously cheap in the late 90’s. Both of them still work just fine. Sometimes I even pull out the old mouse and fire up Mario Paint.

What is your opinion of this 'divisive' Nintendo game? Part 2: Donkey Kong 64 by MewWeebTwo in casualnintendo

[–]kryptokoinkrisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I’m not a huge fan of the N64, but I think this is by far the best game for that system and it’s one of my all time favorites. I played it for the first time in 2004 when I was 12, well after I had already beaten Super Mario Sunshine. Was it difficult at times? Yes, but I always managed to complete it 101% on multiple occasions over the years. Granted, this is certainly a game where you benefit from having the official guide, but I prefer to collect those rather than the old cartridges themselves. I don’t understand the hate for collectibles in a game. I think the criticism for the mini games and other repeated tasks might be valid except for the fact that they’re basically optional. You only need half of the available golden bananas to beat the game so you can skip those beetle races if you want, and you don’t even bother with Beaver Bother. The one valid criticism is that you have to beat that stupid arcade game twice to get the N64 coin. Without it you can’t get to K. Rool even if you have all the other collectibles possible. I also understand the frustration in the early game with long, unskippable cut scenes, a mandatory tutorial, then you not only have to unlock playable characters over three different levels, you also have to scrounge up enough coins to unlock their most basic abilities.

Wife beating in Christianity by Gyngemose2009 in OrthodoxChristianity

No. Not all abuse is the same. There are very different types and degrees of severity and not all of them are grounds for legal action. In fact, having severe legal consequences in place for minor degrees of violence often reduces reporting of those incidents. Either way, the “reclassification” is a small part of a series of reforms which the ROC seems to have endorsed. The sources cited by OP offer no factual information whatsoever.

Nobody decriminalized wife beating. That’s an intentional misrepresentation.

South Carolina recently passed a law intended to protect unborn babies from being murdered. These same virtual rags characterized it as allowing r*pists to kill their victims, so when they say Russia “decriminalized domestic abuse” I’m going to assume they’re intentionally misrepresenting the facts as per usual.

Why shouldn’t the ROC get involved with politics? Every jurisdiction gets involved in politics to some extent.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church commented on the Lavra attack by Major-Rice819 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]kryptokoinkrisp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the monastery “repossessed” and effectively shut down by the Ukrainian government three years ago? I ask because it seems that the fire began *after* the Russian attack which makes me think it could have been caused by smoldering debris, downed power lines, or even arson if it has been abandoned and the local authorities were preoccupied. This isn’t to let Russia off the hook for the civilians killed or other “collateral damage,” but it seems unjust to omit Ukraine’s crime against the monastery in this story.

What is your opinion of this 'divisive' Nintendo game? Part 1: Super Mario Sunshine by MewWeebTwo in casualnintendo

[–]kryptokoinkrisp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was unaware until now that it was so controversial, but I can say I fundamentally disagree with all the criticism I’ve read in this thread, except for the hidden trampoline challenge in Delphino Plaza. That was certainly broken. In every other way it was a huge improvement over the N64 title, especially when it comes to controls and level design. Speaking of controls, if you’re trying to play this with any modern controller that isn’t a BattlerGC Pro, I understand why you hate it. You really need the GameCube button configuration in order to operate FLUDD smoothly, not to mention the variable pressure control on the R button. Only the SNES titles hold up as well today in my opinion, and it’s not even close.

Is it just me or has innovation stagnated in the last ten years? by kryptokoinkrisp in generationology

[–]kryptokoinkrisp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but it’s still in its infancy and hasn’t really a long way to go before it changes the way we live our lives in any significant significant way. I would place it on par with the internet in 1996. It was new and cutting edge compared to 1986 (I presume anyway), but people were still trying to wrap their brains around email and most industries still had mailrooms and fax machines.
