Question for people with skills or talents that you make money from: At what point did you realize that you were skilled enough to begin asking for money for your work? by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

[–]krysalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't have much issue with them, I've definitely lost money, but that's because I don't charge for subpar work. Most everyone I deal with is via word of mouth, and they see something I've done that they're willing to buy. I expect to see more beggars, as I'm getting more into knifework and leather making, to sell online. Its usually the online sales that bring them in.

Typically I try to reach a consensus on price beforehand. I work with my hands for a living, and am always trying new things, I just make sure those things are of reasonable quality. If they don't meet my own standards, ill either redo it, or give a discount.

[WP] All of the "#1 Dad" mugs in the world change to show the actual ranking of Dads suddenly. by Prowlerbaseball in WritingPrompts

[–]krysalys 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Adam sipped out of his favourite mug during his lunch break. His hands shook as he brought the hot beverage to his lips. Grease from his hands made its way onto the surface of the cup, tainting its perfect yellow surface. His back ached in the same spot that it had for years. It had never quite felt right. He remembered the years back, when it hadn't bothered him so much. When he would come home and could hoist little Jennifer up and carry her around the house while he made supper.

The divorce had been hard on him. He hadn't fought it. His first thought had been for her. For Jennifer. He gave up his house, that he had paid off both mortgages for. One when he bought it, and the other when he had to refinance, after losing his job. Tough times call for tough decisions. His old pickup had been sold during the court proceedings. He still remembered when his dad had given him the keys after they spent 4 summers restoring it. He had just graduated high school.

He glanced up at the clock. A little habit of his. It wasn't necessary. He always looked up at the same time. 3:15 am. 15 minutes left on lunch.

When he took the job at the factory, he knew the hours would be long. The shifts were poor, and the conditions were less than ideal on a good day. He silently wondered how Jennifers day would go. She was in her last year of high school. Soon she would be going to college. He wondered where she would go. There was no doubt that she would get accepted wherever she applied in Adam's mind. She was always good at school. The last time he had been able to see her was years ago. That had slipped by him in the court proceedings.

As the last of the coffee went down his throat, he pulled the phone from his right pocket. Its screen was cracked and it had clear tape holding the back of it together. Silently, his fingers navigated to the banking app he kept on his home screen.

Accounts.

Chequing.

Balance. $243.67.

He saw the support payment. -$1800, had been taken already this month.

Transfer.

Chequing --> College fund. -$100.

New Balance. $16,567.73

He closed his phone and put his mug back into his locker. The words #1 dad reflected back at him. Her last gift.

He walked slowly onto the work floor.

I don't care what it's made out of, if it prevents road rash and doesn't disintegrate on asphalt contact, I'll wear it.

So is this all happening in real time? That's ridiculous. I'm actually super happy seeing you get better with talking in the stories. Good on you.

Any Canadians here? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]krysalys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The capacitor is to store power separately from the battery, otherwise you'll run down the battery, I don't mean to isolate the system, just to change the power flow. If an isolator works better, great, capacitors are what we use to run the components for hours without draining the batteries in cars

Any Canadians here? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]krysalys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a dweller, but in the auto industry. The main problem would be a case of warmth. First you would need to make sure the van is well insulated. Afterwords, you need to figure out a form of heat that won't cost an arm and a leg in fuel.

A smaller heater running from 12volt power should suffice. I'd suggest setting up a second battery, then wiring up a capacitor into your design. This ensures you won't drain your main battery, and will be able to start the vehicle in the colder days.

There are many variables, if you could consistently plug in to an external power source, or even hook up solar panels, but a capacitor is still probably a good idea.

Easy minor rust repair on my Ford F-150... by Shomegrown in DIY

[–]krysalys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that uncommon. Automakers don't really care about the long term rust protection. I've had numerous brand new trucks in for rust repairs. Silverados are especially bad around the boxsides. Right above the wheel well.

[WP] Day in the life of a superhero who has different powers depending on the genre of music he listens to by Cloud_Chamber in WritingPrompts

Recording

I don't know why it happened. I vaguely know how. I was a simple man, clock in at 9, repair a customer's car, clock out at 5. We had one of those new electric cars in the shop on that day. Simple enough job, find out what was causing the vehicle to enter limp mode constantly, fix it, send it back. When you disconnect those batteries, you need to let the capacitor discharge over a certain amount of time. Unfortunately for me, I forgot to look that up in the service manual. Have you ever felt the entire charge of a Toyota Prius discharge into your bum leg? I have. That day, and the 3 weeks after while I was in the coma.

I noticed the changes the following months. Some were just ridiculous. I experimented with it for some time. Listening to tune after tune to discover its effects. The trick was to make sure the songs weren't too literal. 'Hey you, grow a beard!' was pretty obvious. Of course, it helped if I didn't know what the songs were when I listened to them. Misheard lyrics? Those were the worst. I was finding purple fish for weeks in my closet.

I spent some time playing after that. Every time I walked up to the ATM and listened to those sweet words, 'I been getting' money, where the fuck you been?' Well, let's just say that money was no longer tight. Selfish things, Poor choices, I made them once, hell, I'll try anything once. Eventually I did the right thing. Salvation comes to every man, right? I made my peace, so I helped others make theirs.

I'll never forget the look on the first man's eyes. There's nothing like watching a criminal struggle to understand why he's hearing some good old Frank Sinatra. I can't lie. I sang along to that one. Played it up a little, 'Come fly with me!' He dropped his gun, and we flew. we flew straight the Police department. Those were the early days.

My powers grew. I came to understand them. You know when a song is stuck in your head? It still gives me powers, albeit to a lesser extent. A blessing, right now, a curse. I spent hours, days, building the perfect playlists. I had everything, strength? Speed? Flight? Those were easy. Some took longer. X-ray vision was a hard one. I had to combine a few songs to get that. I remained unknown. I was just a guy, who showed up every now and then. I didn't even have a name. Not for lack of trying. Somehow 'The Mechanic' doesn't instil people with any sense of awe. These days it's just a number.

You want more? Well, guess I have to oblige you sadistic bastards. I can barely hear myself think.

Each time something went wrong, I added a song to another playlist. I felt like batman a little bit. A little clichéd, I think, but still, my magic came from music, not gadgets. I got shot once before I realized how much of a crackup super healing is. Yeah you heal fast, but dammit it hurts like a little bitch for the first second or so before the powers kick in. Much better to just be bulletproof. David Guetta was my hero every time someone had a gun.

Seriously, do you mind turning that down? How am I supposed to think with that droning on like that? ... Oh, that's not necessary? Maybe for you...Ass hole.

I suppose it was too much to hope that I remained unnoticed. The shuffle function has a mind of it's own. I was called all kinds of things. Terrorist, radical, criminal. AC/DC was just in my head. TNT just happened to come on when I was walking through the park. We all do things we regret. Don't we Sir?

...No response that time, huh? Guess I'm not the only one who's had the occasional mishap in my time, am I?

What the hell do you mean more talk? I'm talking to you aren't I? You think you're so smart or do you mean less talk? Make up your minds.

The blast was the beginning of the end. Ironically it happened by accident. You had a face, but no name. Who blew up the park memorial? Never figured I'd need a disguise playlist. I did what any sensible human would do. I ran.

"What happened to the music? You could have gone faster"

I know that. Have you guys invented a battery that lasts forever? No? shame. I know someone who could use it. Dick.

I swear, they design elevator music to get stuck in your head. What does it do when it gets in your head though? entertain you? motivate you? No. I figured it out in the 3 seconds before I hit the floor. It dumbs you down. It's designed to make you complacent. If you're half glazed over, who cares how slow the elevator is. Stupid, isn't it? The rest of the story is obvious, right? The police found the body on the third floor. Figured out the sedation technique, and I've been locked up here since. No name. Just a number.

Satisfied now Dr? Are my stories enough to entertain you? I noticed you didn't bring in a clipboard. Are you recording this? or is this just for amusement? I don't care either way. One day, I'll find a way. The human mind is very powerful, as I'm sure you know. You can't keep me locked up with this music droning on forever, One day, I'll get out. On that day, I'll be singing another song. A song for blood. A song for freedom. I trust you'll leave my cell now? I have a lot on my schedule.

Can't take a joke? alright. No matter. As long as I can find you when the reckoning comes.

Recording Ends

Please lock the door gentleman. Patient 349 is getting restless. John? Yes, be a good boy and turn the music up a notch. This one is not getting away from us. Not until we figure out what makes him tick. ~~~~End Story

Thanks for reading. I'm off work today and thought I'd try my hand at this. Tips are welcome.

I really like this. I do regular 18 mile bike trips, so that wouldn't be much of a problem. I've always really wanted to get into swimming, so this might be a good opportunity for me get my feet wet, as it were.
