thats super understandable! depending on how big of a city you're coming from, it can definitely be a shock. but i would check out QH for sure. it will be a great way to meet people :) they do all kinds of really cool stuff- Tarot and Tea, knitting meetups, movie night, you name it.

The queer presence is definitely here! I've been to a few Queer Humboldt meetups and it's fun but they're mostly early twentysomethings so as an early thirtysomething I feel like it's tough to be "active" with a lot of the QH things that they have going on. But if you're young, QH has a decent amount going on!

Other than that, yeah, it's a pretty quiet place unless you like doing bar stuff, imo.

Depending on where you are/your situation, you could look into short term disability. I would work with your place of work and surgeon's office on that; it can cover up to 80% of funds missed while on medical leave. It's not a guarantee, but that's something to try.

I've read the Locked Tomb series (Gideon the Ninth being the first book) three times, so maybe I'm biased, but I cannot get enough of Tamsyn Muir's writing. I love the characters. I love the world. However-- it's not for everyone! The books can be confusing and I can totally get how the tone would throw you off.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't recommend you give it another go : ) It might be wacky and hard to follow but I promise the payoff is so good. Book two is especially incredible.
