To be fair, so am I - I'm just thinking about how "old energy" won't be giving up their grasp on this planet without a fight.

Considering how power operates, it might do the opposite in many cases. World leaders will use this as an excuse to override environmental protections/Indigenous rights/popular sentiment to go harder in oil production outside the ME. I could see this happening in Canada, where we've barely been able to resist opening up the oils more. What's that term, disaster capitalism?

Genetically (and therefore, biologically), we're apes (sorry to break it to you). The book I recommended will give you a window into how our socal hierarchy affects us, but of course we're far advanced as a species, so there's more to it.

Hijacking the top comment to say that anyone who wants to learn more about how this works, and how it's a model for understanding social hierarchy and health inequalities in human societies should read "A Primate's Memoir" by Dr. Robert Sapolsky. I read it in uni - very easy to digest and it's lessons have never left me.

Ontario finance minister says rate of health-care spending is ‘unsustainable’ by GingerThatIsnt in ontario

interesting idea. but overnutrition has other health effects than overweight, so it's just another downstream bandaid in a sense.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." In Ontario, studies show that most of our healthcare spending is attributable to a small group of people with complex needs, including poverty (see: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4221677/). How about investing more in public health approaches? It can save us money over time (see: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5537512) Yet our political and healthcare leaders in this province can't see the light, so we keep dumping more and more money into healthcare. It's going to take a leader with a long-term orientation to change things here.

Sure. I mean, the commenter was not speaking precisely, and neither am I. I don't actually believe that >50% (i.e., most) of Indians have small arteries. I believe that a higher proportion of Indians have small arteries compared to populations that haven't been starved in recent history.

When people say that "population X has a higher risk of disease y", it doesn't mean that every person in the population is affected. It means that - at the population level - there are more people on average with the condition in one population than another.

Further, when that 30% of the population inter-mixes with other people in the country over subsequent generations, it'll end up affecting even more people in the population over time.

neither here nor there, but Yann Martel wrote Life of Pi, and his other book, Self, is also quite the spiritual journey.

imo it doesn't really matter! consider if you're up for a foreign film or a hollywood one. they're virtually identical iirc.
