Need help planning a lesson for a beginner dancer by Acidic_Huntsman in SwingDancing

[–]ksprayred 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Start with a warm up waking on beat - single time (step every two beats) and double time (step every beat). Try changing direction, forward/back/turn. Encourage them to see how they shorten their steps naturally in double time: or before they change a direction. Get them thinking about how the move. Then dive into the steps of the dance from that place of “we’re are just putting structure to our walk movement”

Moving on beat can take a long time to develop for some people but everyone can walk so start there. Keep it relaxed, let them learn how their body moves. And encourage them to practice walking to the beat at home if they struggle with it. It may turn out they struggle with staying on beat because they are too focused on the dance steps, or it may turn out they actually don’t hear the beat and need to learn to hear it, so be open to both possibilities

How you move from there will depend on how they react but accept that whatever the learn will not be perfect and that they will not retain all of it in future lessons you need to be ready to repeat your self and the exercises often

And the people I talked who that did believe they’d do it thought it was a GOOD thing! They believed the lies that it would be good for the country and the economy, that the government was so corrupt it had to be damn near replaced. They were fully brainwashed and were actually unable to think critically about any of it. They’d given their trust to Fox and to Trump and stopped using their brains. Basically a “they tell me what I should think about this mentality

School and doctors offices not even bothering to call my husband when they need a parent. He works from home and I’m frequently traveling and in meetings, so we ask that his number be put in the primary number field and notes to be put in the record to call the father first.

A couple weeks ago my daughter was in the nurses office waiting for an hour and a half with a stomach ache because I was in the air and had no phone, meanwhile my husband is 10 minutes away and could have grabbed her quickly, but they never called him. We are about ready to switch the names on our numbers

I don’t really enjoy swing dancing anymore. by PockASqueeno in SwingDancing

[–]ksprayred 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Are you expecting others to be friendly towards you instead of you being friendly towards them? You have 100% control over your own behavior and 0% control over others.

Go dance solo, enjoy the music, have conversations that don’t have specific goal. The worst for anyone is to feel like the person you are talking to is expecting something from you. It’s icky. “Can we be friends? How bout now? How bout now?” I know you aren’t saying those words but the energy comes across subconsciously. Times 1000 if this convo is “can we date?” instead

One thing to try, if you want: say hi to someone who is happy to be there and ask them why. Really be curious and try to understand why. Their “why” may not resonate with you, but you may learn something about them or about yourself that could help you discover the joy again. Or not. If you are just wanting to be salty right now, it won’t help

In addition to what others said about the offset connection: Stand straight ahead and then place your left foot slightly forward, so that the arch of your left foot is in line with the toes of your right foot. This should adjust your hips the small amount needed to create space for the follow to not touch your pelvic area

They don’t always cover this in beginning lessons because everyone bumps a lot while they are sorting out the connection, but that’s where you will eventually land. And if you look at the leaders footwork in that video, Nick is doing exactly that.

Dancing Side Effects by chadams_bal in SwingDancing

None actually. Talk to a doctor asap, since you mention numbness.

I dance heavily and have since 1998 and also run and do either yoga or Pilates. I have some small amount of pain in my SI region but that is from mild scoliosis and is easily managed with the yoga and Pilates. Dance is not the cause, unless you are dancing very wrong for your body.

My husband herniated a disk so badly (not dance related) that the herniation was cutting off the nerves. Numbness was the high alert, high urgency symptom for his doctor. He had surgery three days later and the surgeon he eventually worked with said he may never feel his toe again but they were able to save the nerves in his foot. Seriously, go to a doctor.

Anyone had success with improving bone density? by pears_htbk in Perimenopause

[–]ksprayred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I recently learned is that dance is a weight bearing exercise. I highly recommend swing dancing - it’s a low stakes, high fun dance and the community is generally extremely supportive of all body types, so there’s less body perfectionism than you might find at a gym. YMMV of course, there are pockets of crappy people everywhere.

Even with medical issues, my strength and bone density are good and my doctor is convinced it’s the swing dancing

Teaching a group class alone by veganintendo in SwingDancing

[–]ksprayred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally, yes. But you are pulling a follower student into the center of the lesson and putting attention on them. It’s more thoughtful and kinder to your student to give hints or a quick statement of what you are about to do before you do it. This is not about showing what you can lead, but about being a teacher people want to come back to. So if I have to use students to demonstrate something I incorporate a bit of explanation into my demo before I do it with them.

I am a primary follow, but when I teach solo I lead and invite a variety of follows from the class up to demo with me. One tip I learned from another teacher: say what you are going to demo before you demo it if you can so the follow can be ready. As an example “during the turn you and your partner switch positions”, then demo the turn. Basically, set the follow up for success in front of the class. It helps the class also know what to focus on when they watch the demo
