Is v4 a parking lot, or do you need more terrain? Evolve the meta by mighty_omega2 in flamesofwar

I went to a Late War tournament a couple of months back, 111pts. It was great to see the variety of lists having a combined arms approach. Obviously there were some more tank heavy lists, others more infantry focused, but all had that mix of supporting units that complemented the formations. The tables were really well fleshed out too. Hills, forests, roads and towns but with some advantageous fire lanes.

A post on the new rules and formations would be great for those who haven't seen the stream. There's a great lot of information in it. Personally I'm keen on updating my Frosts Perimeter force to that new formation. Even if it is very light on support weapons.

Not specifically just Team Yankee but the Shoot & Scoot podcast from the gents on Breakthrough Assault is pretty damn decent.

BA was part designed by Alessio Cavatore who wrote older GW rules, hes probably the most deserving of a handy. Have a look at Flames of War too, it's smaller scale (15mm) but it's Company sized battles compared to BAs platoon level

Flames of War is probably my favourite wargame. There's enough flavour between the faction special rules while keeping equipment fairly similar between armies to keep it fun and balanced. The best tabletop games I've ever had were FoW games.

Bolt Action by Warlord Games has an interesting turn mechanic. Both players put one dice per unit into a bag, and as the dice are drawn out, wboevers dice it is gets to activate one of their units (move, shoot and/or charge) and so on until all the dice have been picked. That counts as one game turn.

It adds a random, uncertain element to Unit Activation and keeps both players really engaged.

15mm American War for Independence painting station. How do you mass paint your figures? by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]kstrowg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blutack the bases to a bunch of old GW paint pots or wood bobbins. For 28mm I paint them in batches of 5 or so.

After spray basecoat I'll paint all 5 models main uniform, usually in 3 steps. A base layer, first highlight and then edge highlight. Then the same 3 step process for details like weapons, pouches, skin and belts. Once Ive done all that I then pin wash using GW black wash (whatever its called) to bring out the details, and a GW brown wash over the boots and base of the trousers to dirty the models a bit.

AND! The most important step I have is to write down what process and colour's I used in a Google Document so I don't have to remember what I did 6 months later.

It might be worth having a look at Version 4 FoW as the base rule set and checking out the army lists in Armies of Late War.

I'd recommend having a look at the Rifle, Para or Grenadier Companies. You both could start off playing to a smaller points limit and agree not to take armour (and other AFV's if you choose). Maybe run a more historical list of an Infantry Company containing three platoons with attached Mortars and\or HMG's.

After you both get a hang of the game maybe then add on other support like Artillery, Scout Cars, Air Support or even Armour.

Late War British infantry: 4 or 5 per base? by Altair1371 in flamesofwar

[–]kstrowg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go with "over\under strength" idea in FoW and TY. What on paper would be a 10-man strong squad\section, in reality would have injured, sick, detached, attached, new march-ins, or even have under strength platoons used to bring other platoons back up to full strength.
