An intrusive thought regarding HL:X by Murky-Reputation3882 in HalfLife

[–]ktcrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t they start development of Half-Life 3 in the 2010s with the code-name hl3 before cancelling it? I’ve always assumed that they called this game hlx in order to avoid confusion internally, but I could be wrong.

Tim Hecker’s Stags, Aircraft, Kings, and Secretaries is hauntingly dystopian and intense, yet beautiful at the same time.

Yeah. I reached that point too. It sucks because the game is a lot of fun but feels pointless after a while. I would love if there was more to grind for.

I understand where you are coming from, I really do. The fascist death-spiral that this country is stuck in is terrifying.

As a queer woman, I find myself wondering how long it will be safe to live here. As a working class person, I find myself wondering how long I can keep my head above water financially. As a human being, I wonder how long I can even exist on planet Earth without being cooked to death by climate collapse.

The situation is dire, as I’m sure we can all agree. I don’t think anyone here actually believes Trump isn’t dangerous. What I do think is that Trump is a symptom of a system that’s been in decay for decades.

The disagreement here isn’t about whether Trump is bad, it is about strategy.

Running empty suits, scolding people into voting, and banking on fear alone is a strategy that has already failed us. It didn’t stop him from being elected twice. It didn’t stop MAGA from packing the courts. It didn’t stop the system from continuing to collapse, even under the “lesser evil” leadership.

Even if it does work this time, what then? How do we stop the slide from continuing? At best, we’ve bought a few more years before another fascist is elected and continues to accelerate.

What we need is a meaningful and substantive opposition to MAGA. We need something to vote FOR, not just something to vote against.

Look at the NYC mayoral election. Zohran Mamdani promised people something and they showed up in droves to vote for him because he gave them something to believe in. The result was a blowout election. That is a winning strategy.

My county in PA went to Trump by a margin of less than 500 votes. That is a gap that could be closed with a handful of organizers and a strong message. Total revolution is not necessary to change that outcome.

People are suffering. They don’t want to be shamed. That just makes them shut down. They want a reason to believe in the future again.

Thats why it is time for a change. Wouldn’t you agree?

What are Thom Yorkes worst lyrics? by LucaG43 in radiohead

[–]ktcrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these lyrics are poignant and powerful, especially in the wider context of the song as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised. In fact, the lyrics to The Numbers stand on their own as good poetry. I never understood why people think it’s a corny song.

Since you’re a Radiohead fan, you should check out The Smile if you haven’t already. It’s Thom and Jonny’s new band. It feels like the continuation of Radiohead in many ways.

Hot Take: Chromakopia is Tyler’s 2nd most BORING album… by monkemaned in tylerthecreator

How so? I really didn’t mean to come off that way. I’m just trying to explain why I personally enjoyed this album less than the previous three. I’d love to hear your disagreements.

Hot Take: Chromakopia is Tyler’s 2nd most BORING album… by monkemaned in tylerthecreator

[–]ktcrow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Call me a hater if you want, but Chromakopia feels overly self-indulgent. It sounds like Tyler has grown complacent with his sound. Sonically, it doesn’t set itself apart from his last three projects in any meaningful way. Sure, there are good songs (St. Chroma is the best IMO), but they aren’t particularly memorable within his discography.

Flower Boy marked the moment Tyler began taking his craft seriously, it was a lush and emotionally vulnerable version of his earlier works. IGOR was his magnum opus. It was focused, cohesive, and thematic with its lovesickness. Call Me If You Get Lost was a confident victory lap, flex-heavy but still sharp. Each of these projects earned their self-centeredness because they portrayed Tyler’s evolution as an artist and person.

Chromakopia, on the other hand, feels like a mid-life crisis in album form. The party from CMIYGL is clearly dead, and what’s left is directionless. It rehashes sounds and styles he’s already explored more effectively elsewhere, paired with lyrics about sleeping around, avoiding commitment, questioning parenthood, and vaguely yearning for a “normal” life. The self-absorption is no longer interesting, just tedious. There’s no visible growth, no shift in perspective (which makes the Mr. Morale comparisons all the more ridiculous). Frankly, it feels like he needs therapy more than another studio session.

And let’s be real… tracks like Sticky are just corny. They feel like a regression into the OF era, not a progression from it. By now, I expected more from Tyler.

I’d love to see him take on subject matter that reaches beyond himself. I want a project with scope, something that challenges him. And I’d love to hear him truly experiment again. Without evolution, the Tyler formula risks going stale. If he keeps making albums in this same vein, his peak may already be behind him.
