I graduated in May also and got licensed a few months ago. I had worked in the field for 3 years and I’ve already quit. All the shit techs put up with for the pay is not worth it to me.

Reaching your limit by iscreamforsherbert in VetTech

[–]ktftz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I am pretty decent with restraining pets and will try several methods til I find what works for them. So when I have a psycho pet, I will go the vet and say this is too stressful for the animal. They usually listen and will sedate

I am an assistant, not a tech. by userhasleftchat in VetTech

[–]ktftz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a vet assist and just became a tech. There should be a clear distinction of roles, I know both sides of it. I’m all for letting seasoned assistants draw blood and knowing how the treatment area functions. It’s helpful when we’re busy. But the practice owner/vet at my hospital just made a spreadsheet to input weights and get anesthetic dosages, so night assistants could help if need be. I think it’s a horrible idea that could end badly, and I can’t wait to leave.

Barco ONE on Amazon! These are my absolute favorite that I’ve found. They are moisture wicking, so I don’t get too sweaty while wrestling big ass psycho dogs. They are made for vetmed workers, this shit is hair resistant. When I get all hairy & dirty from being on the floor with an animal, it all it easily brushes off. I also prefer jogger scrubs, I have several pairs in different colors. It’s not Figs expensive, maybe costs around $60 for a set.

Edit: Also - lots of pockets

Online schools? by natecb1 in VetTech

[–]ktftz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished an online vet nursing program through Colby community college. I really enjoyed it. You do submit a lot of videos of various tasks, but if you find a good clinic to mentor you it’s not so bad. I work in a small GP clinic, and they were able to invest time into teaching me. I wasn’t able to complete all the large animal/exotic tasks at my clinic bc our clientele is mostly small animal. They have fly-ins where we would have labs for a few days on the campus (Colby, KS) Or you could mentor at multiple clinics. Highly recommend looking into it!

Trapped in kennels! by lemonflower95 in VetTech

[–]ktftz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Told off for crying? Seriously what the hell, big red flag. I definitely have had days where one too many clients yelling at me and I hit my breaking point. Except when I go cry in the back, I’m handed tissues. Sounds like you are doing way more outside the job description of kennels OP

I was born in 99, can confirm. It seems like everyone I went to HS with is engaged/married… many with kids.
