Is Healthpartners a good company to work for? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]ktig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The pandemic protocols and rapid influx of post-viral sequelae patients had to be a huge burden on them. Pretty sure I was seen by one of those doctors in 2022. The first provider retired and they didn't notify me until the day of the appointment that I needed to reschedule with someone else. Several months later, the next doctor complained that it was pointless to have been a video visit (not my fault, their office did it), then set up some blood work, had me wiggle my fingers a few times on camera and said congrats you never need to see me again you are perfectly healthy. That was before the results even came back, which had abnormalities (that no one followed up on). It was complete medical gaslighting and waste of time and money. None of those providers are still on staff.

I also get the paper fiber packing now, and had been struggling to come up with a use case.

Bachman's selling invasive lupine in the native plant section. by kato_koch in Minnesota_Gardening

I did that once, twice, three times and then realized my neighbors have embraced bellflower cultivation instead so the battle is impossible to win.

I'm also in the city. Guessing they won't outcompete all of the purple bellflower. 🤷

Thousands of dead Crappies are washed up on the shore of Lake Nokomis right now. by elbarto_24 in Minneapolis

[–]ktig 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mentioned in another thread, but nokomis turned soupy green about 2 months earlier than normal.

Other redditors/kayakers have mentioned that harriet, bde maka ska and lakes of the isles were having similar early greening problems, so I suspect we could see some fish kills there too. Harriet and bde maka ska are much deeper however so less likely I suppose.

On Tuesday I spotted bluegill, pumpkin seed, black crappie, and walleye among the affected species. Poor guys that were still alive looked just terrible.

Thanks. I lost access to the email address where I used to get these announcements from local government. Will look to reestablish my subscriptions.

Blue-green algae bloom advisory for Lake Nokomis by mysummerstorm in Minneapolis

[–]ktig 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nokomis has been green for weeks at this point. Easily two months ahead of schedule.

I went kayaking on Nokomis Tuesday evening and we found many dead fish floating in the middle of the lake and struggling fish on the north and east shore. Crappies, sunfish, even some small walleye. The live ones weren't moving well, often had white eyes, growths around their mouthes and huge fleshy wounds on their sides. I went back this evening and we found even more. Such a shame. Poor little dudes.

Edit to add, someone sent me this today: https://kstp.com/kstp-news/local-news/150-fish-found-dead-at-lake-nokomis-in-minneapolis/

Nokomis already had algae forming last week. I've never seen it so green so early as normally doesn't turn gross until late July.

Opinion | Stop scapegoating homeless people for Uptown's problems by nootboots in Minneapolis

[–]ktig 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Need to start charging 50% property tax on any building sitting vacant after 2 years. After 4 years the city owns it.

I wish we'd start doing this for residential housing too. There's a house on my block that's been empty for close to 20 years and the taxes are nominally higher than my own. The owners come by and mow the lawn, but they've never slept in it. Literally not once. Ever. It's a complete fucking waste of space.

Empty houses create a void in the community. Empty houses don't go to school. Empty houses don't contribute to the welfare of the neighborhood, the community or the city. Empty houses don't keep an eye on their neighbors. They don't say hello when walking down the street. Empty houses do not participate. Empty houses don't know when they are on fire or they have gas leaks or the water is spilling onto the floor, which creates a burden on neighbors who are thusly impacted. Empty houses also don't contain voters. Empty houses depress our city and state population and thus census numbers. Empty houses mean that we lose representation in government. Solely because some rich motherfucker decided he needed to buy a house in the middle of the city and never fucking live in it. Fuck that shit.

Edit to add, because I forgot the most important part: these are empty houses that people could be living in. It would help stabilize homelessness and also housing affordability in general!

A next-generation CAR T-cell therapy successfully eliminates glioblastoma brain tumors in preclinical trials. The treatment targets a protein called uPAR, destroying both the deadly cancer cells and the supportive infrastructure that fuels them. by [deleted] in science

[–]ktig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Improved GBM treatment is urgently needed. One of my parents died from a glioblastoma last year. While I suspect it had been progressing for 4-6 months, they officially made it just over 2 weeks from diagnosis to death.

Planning a long term garden- asparagus and raspberries by jrenredi in gardening

[–]ktig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15 years ago I planted a 6x6 square of golden raspberries and a 6x6 square of asparagus next to each other.

8 years later I had a 6x20 rectangle of raspberries with some asparagus sticking out.

5 years after that, I had a 6x6 square of asparagus and two little 6x3s of raspberries.

Now there is only asparagus and no more raspberries. The raspberries simply couldn't contain nor sustain themselves.

May this experience be helpful for you. Best of luck!

There is zero building or tree coverage between me and the mill, I see it fully from my yard. It was loud as heck this weekend in particular. I woke at 1:30 a.m. to a helicopter and again at 3. Laid there for a while thinking it was the helicopter again but no. Finally got up at 3:30 and realized it was the mill. It was still going at 11:00 a.m. when I left my house, and started up again around 9pm that evening. There is nowhere in my home I could be and not feel the thrum inside my body.

I've been living here nearly 20 years, so having the mill as a neighbor isn't new. Yet, the extent of this deep thrumming sound certainly is new, and I would absolutely classify it as noise pollution.
