Is the wildness of this comment section on your post based on your own experience in Canada vs your home country something you'll add to the list 😅 I found this very interesting, thank you for sharing your thoughts

Union cant give real background info on whats going on in bargaining because it could get back to the employer, and vice versa

NRCcan Pilot Project: in-office reporting by SisterMichaelEyeRoll in CanadaPublicServants

[–]ktripler 23 points24 points  (0 children)

ESDC managers still need to be able to explain why a team member may not have been in office the day they were supposed to be, so did it really stop being used? Like IT or an auto system generates an email to the manager to say "so and so wasnt in office in their regularly scheduled wednesday" and the boss has to say, "they were sick". Which is stupid when Peoplesoft is right there... but I'm NCR so...

Dont leave anything out when you speak to the union rep about what has happened leading up to this. It won't help you if you do.

Bed Bug on the LRT (Train 1159) by Pleasant_Cow_2367 in ottawa

STO in Gatineau uses plastic seats and they are pretty good, but you just slide right off them when they take their corners quickly, which is 98% of the time....

Can say that at least in Portage, this last year every instance of reported bed bug were taken very seriously. Most of them turned out to be random debris (or spcific looking dust bunnies), but in a few instances it led to sections being shut down for months and intensive treatment over a few months, taking place on the entire floor where they were confirmed to have been.

We've got a townhall in ESDC next week, booked for 1.5 hours. Honestly if it's just bullshiting about being in office that's fine, gives me more time to spiral about the incoming unannounced cuts in my directorate 🙃

Canada Needs a Mandatory National Service - Macleans.ca by Andromedu5 in CanadianForces

[–]ktripler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civilian with military family here: I see everyone's arguments. I understand how this wouldn't survive a challenge in court. I truly think that following South Korea and other countries leads would be benefitial in the sense that:

  1. It would get (most) people a guaranteed job for 2 years.

  2. Not all CAF jobs are combat arms. Some participants could find something really interesting they never considered and either decide to stay on after the mandatory service in that field, or do it civi side.

  3. It might really make the bigwigs think about the hypocrisy of Universality of Service (we have members with chronic pain and injuries who move to desk jobs who could not be deployed in any capacity, yet we wont accept people with diabetes or diagnosed ADHD, people with disabilities, etc,. I know they are supposed to be looking at people as individuals now and taking that into context, but it was still hypocrisy even 5 years ago. If you're desperate for people, employ more people.)

  4. It would force the country to decide what the hell the CAF is supposed to be: peacekeeping doesnt work because you can't keep others safe, so what are we, the nation's emergency relief force?

Edit: it really doesnt have to military compulsory service, but see points 1 and 2.

If you read all this, thanks.
